Spurs player ratings: Aurier and Foyth struggle but Christian Eriksen shines as he nears Tottenham exit

UNDER-PAR Spurs scrambled to salvage a point at bottom side Norwich this evening.

Jose Mourinho’s side were utterly abject in the first half and would have trailed by more had it not been for VAR’s harsh intervention to disallow Teemu Pukki’s strike.

But after making two half time changes… and with wantaway Christian Eriksen’s influence growing, Spurs eventually managed to grab a hold of the game and pile the pressure on the lowly Canaries.

Daniel Farke’s side held out for a deserved point, however, and here is how SunSport’s Etienne Fermie rated each Spurs performer.

PAULO GAZZANIGA – 6/10

Excellent save down to his right to deny Marco Stiepermann early on. Was left badly exposed for Vrancic’s opener but might be a tad disappointed.

JUAN FOYTH – 4

Dreadful mistake for Norwich’s opener, as he was pick-pocketed in his own half. Was characteristically brave on the ball – but struggled under pressure from Buendia and Hernandez. Hooked at half time.

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD – 6

Picked out Harry Kane for a glorious chance with a brilliant long pass. His usual commanding self, but perhaps could have gotten out quicker to Vrancic ahead of the opener.

JAN VERTONGHEN – 4

Failed to deal with a Vrancic punt up the park but was spared his blushes by VAR after an extremely marginal offside call against Teemu Pukki. Was uncharacteristically mistake prone and like Foyth was given the hook at half time.

SERGE AURIER – 4

Unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net after Alderweireld had tackled the troublesome Pukki. Made very little impact going forward.

GIOVANI LO CELSO – 6

A few nice, intricate involvements in the first half, but struggled to fully assert himself on the opening 45. Is still finding his feet in English football but signs of promise are there.

TANGUY NDOMBELE – 6

Some lovely touches and swivels but too often left exposed either by poor passes into him, or a total lack of support in the midfield. The Frenchman is so skilful when the ball does reach him though.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 8

Farcically got in Ndombele’s way, leading to a golden first half chance for Stiepermann. Brilliant free-kick early in the second half to equalise. Unfortunately given that he looks certain to leave – he is still this team’s brain on the pitch – whether they look like scoring or not seems to depend on whether the Dane is at it. Booked. STAR MAN

RYAN SESSEGNON – 5

Provided a succession of poor crosses in the first half. Fought manfully in the second without making a huge impact.

DELE ALLI – 6

Ballooned a good chance over the bar early on after being teed up by Kane. Plenty of tricks and flicks but not much came off. Played in Kane in the build up to the penalty.

HARRY KANE – 7

Took down a glorious Alderweireld pass well but his subsequent effort was well saved by Krul. Clever duck inside to win the penalty – which he expertly converted on his 200th Premier League appearance.

SUBS:

LUCAS MOURA (for Vertonghen, 46th minute) – 7

His lofted ball towards Kane was handballed by Lewis – with Eriksen subsequently scoring from the resulting free-kick. His direct running made a solid impact. Booked.

DAVINSON SANCHEZ (for Foyth, 46th minute) – 6

Stuck to his task reasonably well at the back.

ERIK LAMELA (for Lo Celso, 75th minute) – 6

Stung Krul’s palms with a decent effort from range.

Subs not used: Vorm, Tanganga, Dier, Skipp
