Solskjaer’s youngsters produced a three-goal blitz to get them back into the game at Bramall Lane – but it was not enough.
John Fleck and Lys Mousset put Blades two goals ahead before Solskjaer’s lads fought back.
But in the space of seven second-half minutes Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford had United ahead.
Blades were well worth their lead with their start – the visitors didn’t know what hit them.
Solskjaer’s strugglers were second to every ball and seemed rattled by the frenzied atmosphere at Bramall Lane.
United had David De Gea to thank for keeping the score down as a he pulled off a superb double save early on.
The Spaniard firstly turned away John Lundstram’s volley, then got up and managed to keep out David McGoldrick’s header from close range.
But there was nothing he could do as United got carved up by the Blades again for the opening goal.

Phil Jones, in his first Premier League appearance of the season, was muscled off a straightforward ball by Lys Mousset in dangerous territory.
De Gea managed to save Lundstram’s effort from the pull-back but Fleck shinned the ball into the bottom corner.
It took United almost half an hour to get a shot on goal, which Simon Moore saved from Anthony Martial.
And it needed Jones’ headed clearance from Fleck’s fizzed free-kick that was heading for the top corner.
Mousset added the second after the break after starting and finishing a wonderful move.
He nicked the ball off Andreas Pereira then set off for goal after laying off for Fleck, whose pass split open the United defence.
Mousset still had work to do and went for placement over power when he curled into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Brandon Williams pulled one back with 19 minutes left when he fired into the bottom corner when Dan James’ cross went to the back post.
Then Greenwood tapped in from Rashford’s cross to level, with the England striker adding to the tally after James’ cross.
McBurnie scored in stoppage time to snatch a late, but well-deserved, point for Wilder’s men.
