Newcastle to prioritise Jonjo Shelvey contract over transfers in January with just one full season left on current deal

STEVE BRUCE will look to secure Jonjo Shelvey’s Newcastle future before splashing any cash in January, according to reports.

The midfielder has just one full season left on his Magpies deal and with West Ham circling, the Toon are keen to act quick.

Bruce has made it clear the 27-year-old is a key part of his plans at St James’ Park having given him the captain’s armband in Jamaal Lascelles’ absence.

Shelvey’s five goals from 11 Premier League games this season have helped the Geordies soar to ninth despite many backing them for relegation when Bruce was appointed.

And as a result, his future at Newcastle is one of Bruce’s top priorities, according to the Telegraph.

A recent calf injury meant he missed the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat at Burnley but he was back for their home victory over Palace by the same scoreline on Saturday.

Shelvey has been at the club since January 2016 having previously been with Swansea, Liverpool and Charlton.

The Hammers have been interested in his services for some time and were ready to pounce at the end of last season.

Shelvey was a boyhood West Ham fan and the East Londoners are in the market for a midfielder with Mark Noble perceived as past his prime by many.

The Hammers are also interested in Stoke midfielder Joe Allen but are only prepared to pay £8million of the £15m the Potters are asking.
