Mourinho says ‘I’ll make new mistakes’ at Spurs.. then claims he doesn’t need any players in January transfer window

JOSE MOURINHO admitted he has made mistakes in his career and will “make new ones” as he spoke this afternoon for the first time as Tottenham manager.

But the Special One says he is humble enough to have learned the error of his ways as he attempts to turn Spurs into a winning club.

Mourinho, 56, took over from Mauricio Pochettino yesterday, tasked with bringing success to North London.

And he insisted at his first press conference as boss he does not need to sign any players to deliver what is being asked.

Asked if was an improved boss after being sacked by Manchester United last December, Mourinho said: “I think so. These last 11 months have been used to think and to prepare.

“You never lose your DNA. You are what you are – for the good things and the bad things. I know in my career that I’ve made mistakes.

“I’m not going to make the same mistakes. I’m going to make new mistakes. I’m going to be stronger.

“Happiness-wise I am convinced my choice was a great one. Ten out of ten.

“The job? Sometimes results make these decisions. I wouldn’t say it’s a big job. The club is huge.

“I know that I have potentially a great job in my hands.

“I am humble. I am humble enough to try to analyse my career.

“Not just the last year but the problems and the solutions. The principle of my analysis was not to blame anyone else.”

Mourinho added: “The best gift are the players who are here.

“I don’t need new players. I just need to get to know these ones better.

“I know them well but you never know them well enough until you meet them.

“I told the players I came here because of them.

“I tried to buy some for different clubs and some I didn’t even try because you know how difficult it was.”

Mourinho’s trophy-laden career has been marred by periods when he has blown up in frustration and anger – usually just before he leaves a club.

The last few months of his spell at United saw him at odds with the board and his players as results stuttered on the pitch.

But Mourinho is unrepentant – saying there is no way he is going to be happy if his team are not winning.

He said: “If you are happy by losing football matches, it’s difficult to be a winner in any moment of your career.

“But the emotional control to keep the self esteem and confidence and in those around you is very important.”

Having spent two spells at Stamford Bridge, there was a time when he was known as Mr Chelsea – but Mourinho claims he is now only Mr Spurs.

He added: “I think I am Mr Porto and Mr Real Madrid and other clubs as well, I am whatever club I am at.

“I wear the pyjamas of the club and sleep in them. I am a club man, but I am a many club man.”

Mourinho also made a point of paying tribute to the work done by his predecessor Pochettino, who has been a good friend of his over the years.

The Spurs boss said: “I’ve been smiling for two days. First of all I do it with a bit of sadness, I have to speak about Mauricio.

“I have to congratulate him on the incredible job he did. I share with you what we shared inside.

“This club will always be his home, this training ground his training ground. He is always welcome here.

“Tomorrow is another day. He will find happiness soon. He will give everything like he did at this club.

“He will leave with sadness with the feeling that he did great work. It is what everyone at the club felt.”

Mourinho will get dow tobusiness, with Spurs travelling across London to face bitter rivals West Ham at lunchtime on Saturday.
