Mourinho is back in the Premier League with rivals Spurs after he was axed at Old Trafford in December 2018.

Under-pressure Solskjaer replaced him after an impressive interim stint but the wheels have well and truly fallen off after four wins this season leaves them in ninth.

Mourinho spent his time out of football as a pundit for Sky Sports where he made a number of sly comments about his old employers.

In May he claimed that Solskjaer’s struggles showed what a good job he did at Man United.

And more recently he took a dig at the United board for protecting Solskjaer who is in a “great situation” at the club.

Schmeichel claims Mourinho has taken plenty of media training and advice but says he was “too emotional” at the beginning after his sacking.

Speaking to The Times, the 56-year-old said: “So often football throws these scenarios in.

“It is very, very clear Mourinho has taken a lot of media training, media advice in this period, but he went straight into punditry and some things were said.

“There’s a lot of bitterness towards United and he was saying things about results, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s results. It has to be a critique that is non-insulting or not towards a person in a situation, he could have done that.

“I think that José, in the beginning, he was too emotional about his former position.

“Now he’s the humble one [laughs]. I’m not going to say José was the greatest Manchester United manager, I’m definitely not going to say he was a failure, it was right to appoint him or wrong to appoint him, or right or wrong to sack him.

“But José is very important to the Premier League and he has been for a very long time. He gives us something different.”

Mourinho goes up against former club United on Wednesday that could spell the end for Solskjaer.

A 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa left him clinging onto his job with the Red Devils eight points adrift of the top four.
