Old Trafford boss ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly made Haaland and Leicester playmaker James Maddison, 23, his prime targets for January’s transfer window.
The Athletic suggested Solskjaer aims to build on much-improved wins over Spurs and Manchester City by spending big next month.
Fifth-placed United lack both a high-class creative midfielder and frontline back-up as Solskjaer’s youthful squad have so far relied more on pace, potential and unpredictable flair.
And Haaland went into this evening’s game with Liverpool on the back of hitting 27 goals in just 19 games this season.
He is thought to have a £17million release clause in his Salzburg contract.
The Leeds United fan is the son of former Elland Road, Man City and Nottingham Forest hardman Alf-Inge Haaland.
But The Athletic claim Haaland Junior’s controversial agent Mino Raiola would prefer him to join a lower-profile club than United before a mega-money move after a few more years.
Meanwhile, Maddison has been one of Leicester’s man men this term in their rise to second place.
The ex-Norwich midfielder made his England debut in November’s 7-0 Euro 20202 qualifying win over Montenegro.
United could also revive their pursuit of Tottenham stylist Christian Eriksen, 27, despite the Dane looking out of sorts this term.
