MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Nemanja Matic “liked” an Instagram post of himself being linked with a move to Tottenham because he “has a sense of humour”.
The Serbian midfielder, 31, was jokingly linked with Spurs after Jose Mourinho was hired to take over from sacked Mauricio Pochettino.
Solskjaer says Matic was only playing along with the joke about moving to Spurs
Mourinho had twice signed Matic – at Chelsea and then later Man Utd – as fans prayed for a hat-trick.
And after one fan posted a hilarious meme joking about Matic heading to North London, the player himself posted a series of emojis applauding the joke.
But Solskjaer moved quickly to douse the fire, saying Matic was just playing along with the gag, despite rumours of a January exit.
The United chief joked: “Jose coming back is going to be a spectacle and a circus – and Nemanja has a sense of humour.”
As well as being linked with a move to Tottenham, Atletico Madrid are thought to be keen on a move for the veteran United midfielder in January.
Matic has fallen out of favour somewhat under Solskjaer – but could play against Sheffield United on Sunday due to injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.
Reports recently claimed Matic, 31, is pushing for a January transfer – with fans quick to joke it will surely be to Tottenham.
One wrote: “Perfect chance for United to offload Matic to Spurs for £40million.”
Another said: “I’m pretty sure I ain’t the only one who can’t wait for Nemanja Matic to break the news to the whole world in January that it’s always been a dream for him to play and wear the colours of Spurs.”
On even predicted the “The Mourinho to do list”, writing: “Sign Zlatan, Willian and Matic, make Eriksen a defensive midfielder and Son Heung-min a world class wing-back.”
