Greenwood stars again and the future’s bright for United youngster Garner

A BLITZ of four goals in 11 second-half minutes ensured United finished top of their group ahead of the knockout stages.

After a dismal first period, the game was sparked into life when Ashley Young fired in the opener.

Mason Greenwood produced two superb finishes and also won the penalty in which Juan Mata dispatched.

It was the perfect night for United’s youngsters and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who can now turn his attentions to Everton on Sunday.

Here’s how SunSport’s Richard Forrester rated the United players.

ROMERO 6

Had barely anything to do in the first half playing in his 50th United game.

Looked slightly rusty on a couple of occasions but managed to deal with everything that came at him.

YOUNG 9

The unlikely goalscorer and one of United’s best players on the night.

Looks far more comfortable on the right than he does on the left and was finally rewarded when he was on hand to smash home the opener.

Should have had an assist too but Mata squandered the opportunity. Not much to do from a defensive point of view.

Subbed off on 68 minutes.

TUANZEBE 6

A real chance to impress the boss and was solid enough alongside Maguire although slightly unconvincing at times in the game.

Against better opposition, he may struggle at centre-back and needs more gametime in the Europa League if he is to stand a chance of breaking into the first-team.

MAGUIRE 7

Had a couple of chances with his head that were comfortably saved.

Other than that a quiet night for the England international before he was subbed off for Phil Jones midway through the second half.

WILLIAMS 8

Another player who struggled in the first half but was excellent in the second.

Joined the attacks and linked up well with Mata and Greenwood.

His pass into the striker helped win the penalty and he looked more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Is really making that left-back spot his own.

MATIC 7

Won’t be forcing his way into United’s first team on this performance – steady but unspectacular.

His discipline was useful for youngster Garner to break forward and add to United’s attack.

Also played a really well weighted pass into Mata that set up the first goal of the night.

GARNER 8

Making his first Old Trafford start and showed a few nice touches early on to settle the nerves.

Played with the handbrakes off in the second half and began to thrive with bursting runs forward to create chances for his team-mates.

Made a important tackle deep in AZ’s half that assisted Greenwood’s first goal of the evening.

A bright future for the United star.

PEREIRA 7

Lost out on his starting role in the league and had another quiet night here albeit one moment of brilliance.

He produced a superb piece of skill that helped break the deadlock when Young fired in the opener.

Looked more relaxed on the ball when the game was already done and dusted.

MATA 7

Struggled in the first-half but came to life in the second by playing a key role in two of the goals.

Assisted Young for the first and scored the third from the spot when Greenwood won the penalty.

The youngsters are certainly benefitting from playing alongside the experienced Spaniard.

GREENWOOD 9

Two brilliant finishes to highlight why he’s rated so highly at the club.

Solskjaer said he’s the best finisher at the club and he showed why when his left-footed effort rippled into the corner to grab his first.

He then used his blistering pace to win the penalty in the second half which Mata buried before bagging a second with another top strike.

MARTIAL 5

Missed a golden opportunity to score five minutes into the second half and had a quiet night up front.

Solskjaer subbed him when United went in front to rest him for the weekend fixture against Everton.
