Ex-Man Utd star Daley Blind diagnosed with heart condition after complaining of dizziness against Valencia

FORMER Manchester United defender Daley Blind has been diagnosed with a heart condition.

Ajax confirmed the news that the Dutchman will now spend time on the sidelines following a series of extensive medical examinations.

Blind, 29, felt dizzy during Ajax’s defeat against Valencia and was taken for tests that revealed he has heart muscle inflammation also known as Cardiomyopathy.

The severity of the condition or how long Blind will be out of action remains unknown.

But it could put his involvement for the Dutch side at Euro 2020 in doubt.

An Ajax statement posted online said: “Daley Blind has been diagnosed with heart muscle inflammation.

“The central defender has undergone an extensive medical examination in recent days, following the dizziness that briefly bothered him during the Ajax – Valencia match.

“It was then decided to place a subcutaneous ICD with Blind, a device that is applied under the skin.

Cardiomyopathy – NHS info

Cardiomyopathy is a general term for diseases of the heart muscle, where the walls of the heart chambers have become stretched, thickened or stiff. This affects the heart’s ability to pump blood around the body.

The abnormal heart muscle seen in cardiomyopathy is not caused by blocked arteries in the heart (coronary artery disease), high blood pressure (hypertension), disease of the heart valves (valvular disease) or congenital heart disease.

Most types of cardiomyopathy are inherited and are seen in children and younger people.

How serious is it?

If you have dilated cardiomyopathy, you’re at greater risk of heart failure, where the heart fails to pump enough blood around the body at the right pressure.

Heart failure typically causes shortness of breath, extreme tiredness and ankle swelling. Learn more about the symptoms of heart failure.

There’s also a risk of heart valve problems, an irregular heartbeat and blood clots. You’ll need to have regular appointments with a GP so the condition can be monitored.

“As a result of this intervention, which took place yesterday, the 29-year-old international will not start the training camp selection at the beginning of January, but will continue to work on his recovery in Amsterdam.”

Blind took to Twitter to release his own statement that said: “Ajax have just posted an update of my condition online, the most important thing is that I am feeling good at the moment.

“I’m trying to come back as soon as possible, thank you for everything and see you guys soon.”
