Lineker, 58, tweeted: “Profoundly saddened to tell you that my beloved dog, Snoop, passed away last night.

“He was my friend, my companion, my boy.

“Whether I left the house for 2 weeks, 2 days or 2 minutes he would greet me with equal measure of enthusiasm and love.

“I’ll miss him greatly. RIP Snoop.”

In an interview with Lineker’s ex-wife Danielle, with the pair together at the time, she said golden Labrador Snoop helped the step-family bond.

She told PetsPyjamas: “We love him so much as he is our baby in the family.

“Being a step family, he has helped us all bond.

“He is so instinctive; he just knows when you’re feeling poorly or having a bad day and is always around for a cuddle.

“He has total unconditional love for us all, as we do for him.”

Lineker and Danielle have remained close since their 2016 divorce, and were recently pictured together walking her pet dog.

Friends and fans have been sending their condolences to Lineker.

Celebrity pal Piers Morgan wrote on Twitter: “Sad news. Very sorry mate. RIP Snoop”.

BennyM said: “Worst feeling ever losing a dog. RIP Snoop”.

Keith Ashley added: “So very sorry Gary, I understand what it is like to lose a pet dog, they are so loyal and loving and are always there for you. I doubt if anybody could have looked after him better than yourself. Easy for me to say but try and remember the good times if you can. RIP Snoop.”
