Christian Benteke warns Crystal Palace he may quit club in January transfer window for sake of Belgium career

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE admits he could quit Crystal Palace in January for regular action elsewhere.

The flop striker has managed just four goals across 60 games in the last two-and-a-half seasons for the Eagles.

Yet Benteke remains a key part of Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad ahead of Euro 2020.

He scored two goals in Tuesday’s 6-1 win over Cyprus.

But it seems Benteke wants to completely displace Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku as Martinez’s first-choice striker by next summer.

And he believes he needs to be playing more in order to feature regularly for his country.

Benteke hopes he can achieve that under Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

But the former Aston Villa and Liverpool forward, 28, insists he will seek a transfer in January if his demands aren’t met.

Benteke told La Derniere Heure: “Playing for your club is always different from the national team.

“I hope the Cyprus game will give me my confidence back and give me the chance to score for Palace.

“But I also have to think about the January transfer window. I will give it some thought and I’ll see what can be done.

“It is important to have playing time for your club, but what you do on national duty is also important.

“It carries weight and can compensate a little. I was playing for high stakes in the Cyprus game.

“Places in the Belgium squad are hard to come by, I have to be honest. I wanted to show the coach what I can do and stood up to be counted.

“I really want to play at Euro 2020. I work like a madman every day with that target in mind.”
