Mercedes know they will struggle to dominate Formula E like Lewis Hamilton has in F1

MERCEDES know they will struggle to recreate Lewis Hamilton levels of F1 dominance in Formula E.

Hamilton and the Silver Arrows have dominated F1 since 2014 but won’t get their way in their debut electronic season.

Mercedes’ electric switch will be led by Brit Ian James, who will have F1 mastermind Toto Wolff on speed dial.

James has been an unsung hero behind the scenes in F1 for Mercedes but has been pulled out of the shadows to take on their venture into FE.

Asked about if they can rule the electric roost, he said: “The simple answer is no. I don’t think Formula E lends itself to that kind of dominance.

“We saw last season, seven different drivers from seven different teams win in the first seven races.

“The first time a team won two races was in the eighth race, and then when a driver won two races was in race nine.

“And I don’t see that changing, because of the one day format and racing in city centres – it adds a certain air of unpredictability to the championship.”

He added: “Toto is very much on speed dial and he will be keeping a close eye on things, so I expect the frequency of contact to ramp up as the season starts.”

Former F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne and F2 champion Nyck de Vries will be behind the wheel of Mercedes’ charge into the electric world.
