How Premier League table would have looked without VAR with HUGE change to European places

BRENTFORD would have take Aston Villa’s Conference League place without VAR this season. But despite a campaign of big calls and some controversy, none of the other key positions at either end of the table have been altered because of the technology.
There would only be a few changes to the Premier League table without VAR

SunSport has tracked every decision changed after VAR intervention this season – 114 in total – and worked out the results of the match if the original decisions had stood.
That included 54 goals disallowed – including 36 for offside calls – and just 13 goals awarded, while 27 spot kicks were given and 12 penalties annulled.
Our study shows Newcastle had both the most VAR decisions FOR and AGAINST them – 11 of each.
Five teams – Chelsea, Everton, Leeds, Manchester City and Southampton – all benefited from VAR overturns on just three occasions, while Fulham had only two changed decisions against them.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
But our analysis shows that the changes only marginally affected the final standings after the 380 matches played between August and Sunday.
The top four would still have finished in the same order, although City would have won the league by 12 points rather than five.
Brighton, earning two points more, would leapfrog Liverpool – six points fewer – into fifth although both would still be in the Europa League spots.
But Brentford would have been two points better off and seventh as Aston Villa were a staggering 11 points better off as a result of changed decisions.

Indeed, had Deniz Undav’s first “goal” at Villa Park on Sunday not been ruled out for an offside call, Spurs would have finished seventh in the actual table.
Further down the league, the non-VAR table sees Chelsea and Crystal Palace swap places in 11th and 12th and Nottingham Forest going above West Ham and Bournemouth into 14th.
Yet while the bottom four would all have earned more points – five in the case of relegated Leeds – the finishing positions would have remained exactly the same, with Everton staying up by a single point rather than the two point gap in the official standings. More

Vinicius, 22, was dismissed after VAR showed him catching Hugo Duro’s face with his arm.
Although the Valencia striker did not receive any punishment for getting the Brazilian in a headlock moments before.
After the game, the Real Madrid star claimed Spain is a “country of racists”.
He reported abuse from home supporters during his team’s 1-0 defeat at the Mestalla Stadium.

Vinicius pointed out the alleged offenders to the referee, with the match temporarily halted for around nine minutes.
Los Blancos’ star winger sarcastically applauded and gave a peace sign to the home crowd as he left the field.
He will not have to serve the five-game suspension after the RFEF Competition Committee overturned it.
A Spanish FA statement said that the decision to rescind the red card was made due to VAR failing to show the referee the full footage of the incident.

It read that the referee was “deprived of a decisive part of the facts”, making it “impossible for him to properly assess what happened”.

On the red card the statement read: “However, after viewing the images provided by the VAR, the referee changed his criteria, leaving the yellow card without effect and showing him a red one.
Valencia will also be forced to a partial closure of the south stand Mario Kempes at the Mestalla Stadium.
However, the LaLiga side are set to appeal against the sanction, according to Cope.

The game ended 1-0 to Sociedad but their task was made easier after Suarez was dismissed in the 34th minute.
The Colombian was given marching orders for a high foot on Robin Le Normand after VAR has intervened.
Referee Pablo González Fuertes had originally only given him a yellow card, but VAR stepped in, and the punishment was upped to a red card.
And the striker was less than impressed with the decision as he argued with the fourth official after leaving the pitch.

He then took his protests further as he then shoved the VAR monitor to the ground as he headed to the tunnel.
Fans backed his anger against the decision online as one said: “Never a red.”
A second commented: “That’s not a red card. A genuine attempt to win the ball and caught him with the inside of his foot.
“Wasn’t even studs up. As for the ‘injury’ maybe if they didn’t wear playing card-sized shin guards they’d actually have some protection.”

Shocking moment VAR officials appear NOT TO SHOW ref key Vinicius Jr footage as star sent off after racial abuse

FOOTBALL fans have speculated that VAR officials did not show key sections of footage to show the referee as Vinicius Jr was sent off in Real Madrid’s clash with Valencia. The Brazilian winger was handed a red card after a brawl broke out in the game in which it was claimed he was racially abused by the Valencia fans.

The dismissal came in the closing stages of the second half after Toni Kroos went close to scoring from a free kick.
Players from both sides collided and TV replays showed Valencia’s Hugo Duro put his arm around Vinicius Jr’s neck.
The Madrid star then managed to get out of the hold and caught the striker’s head with his arm.
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea was advised to go to the monitor to review the scuffle.

However, some fans have claimed that the footage shown to the Spanish official appears to have missed the part in which Vinicius Jr has Duro’s arm around his neck.
Viewers of the stream suggested that the referee was only shown the arm hitting Duro, leading to the red card of Vinicius Jr.
The moment has been slammed by viewers online as one tweeted: “This whole situation is ludicrous.
“Vinicius Jr was the subject of racial abuse, he’s then been put in a chokehold, VAR have told the referee to look at it, the footage shown to the ref didn’t show the choke and Vinicius Jr has been sent off.”
    Most read in Football
A second wrote: “With the ref being shown that portion of play the player that Vini raises his hands to even has his arm around Vinis neck so how has that been missed also. The Spanish refereeing makes our lot look amazing.”
A third said: “One of the worst decisions of the season! Utterly shocking!”
A fourth added: “How on earth hasn’t Hugo Duro been sent off there.”
A fifth defended Vinicius, by saying: “That is unbelievable, he had every right to raise his arm there to shake him off.”
Real Madrid later published an angry statement condemning the lack of “decisiveness” among referees in Spain and the “inaction” of the Spanish FA.
It went on to say: “Yesterday, the referee and those in charge of the VAR evaded their responsibilities and made unfair decisions based on incomplete images, which were not seen completely, which were biased and which resulted in the direct sending off of our player Vinicius Júnior.
“Unfortunately, what happened yesterday and the handling of it by the referees and the VAR is not perceived as an isolated incident, but as something that has been happening in many of our matches.
“The victim who experiences the crime can never be held responsible for the offence.”
La Liga meanwhile have published a list of seven complaints of offensive chants they have sent to the Spanish FA and Anti-violence Commission, detailing offensive chants by Valencia fans.
Neither La Liga or the Spanish FA have yet commented on the VAR footage that was used for the red card decision.

Reports from Spain claim that the Spanish FA and the Referees’ Committee have taken action and sacked the game’s VAR official Nacho Iglesias Villanueva.
However, those reports state that the sacking will only come into effect after this weekend as Iglesias Villanueva has already been appointed to a match. More

Fans given incredible behind-the-scenes look at VAR on MNF… but viewers aren’t convinced by Howard Webb’s ‘propaganda’

FOOTBALL fans were treated to a unique behind-the-scenes look at VAR but some were not convinced by Howard Webb in his appearance on Monday Night Football. The PGMOL chief accompanied Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher and offered further insight into VAR’s decision-making process.

One was the decision to overturn a handball given against Arsenal’s Jakub KiwiorCredit: Sky Sports
Another included the decision to award Ivan Toney a penalty against BournemouthCredit: Sky Sports
All three watched a series of clips where VAR has played a vital role in overturning a referee’s on-pitch decision, and discussed the communication between refs and the VAR in Stockley Park.
First they watched an incident during a match between Chelsea and Liverpool where Kai Havertz scored with the use of his hand – the ref gave the goal but VAR was able to rule it out for handball after watching a replay.
Webb, Carragher and Neville also reviewed a recent handball incident in Arsenal’s win at Newcastle earlier this month.
Interestingly the footage showed VAR going through all the steps and highlighted their awareness surrounding possible outcomes – including the ball potentially going out of play from an outswinging corner.

For the incident in question the referee blew for a penalty after judging Jakub Kiwior to have blocked a shot with his arm.
However the VAR was quickly on hand to check if the ball first hit Kiwior’s thigh, which it did, and they informed Chris Kavanagh to overturn his penalty call.
The trio also watched replays from West Ham vs Newcastle, Brentford vs Bournemouth and Leicester vs Arsenal but some fans felt certain incidents were cherry-picked to show VAR in a good light.
Other controversial moments where VAR appeared to have got decisions incorrect were left out, leading fans to claim it was a PR exercise.

One fan wrote: “I appreciate that Sky have gone through some VAR decisions where we can hear them walk through the decisions, but they’ve definitely played it safe with the clips they’ve shown!”
Another added: “That VAR segment on MNF has just made me hate Howard Webb and prem’ refs even more. 35 minutes of cherry picked PGMOL propaganda showing how ‘competent’ they are. Useless.”
A third said: “This is so so embarrassing. they’re only showing easy decisions they got right. How about you show Mitoma v Spurs, Rashford v city, Arsenal vs Brentford, Crystal Palace v Brighton etc and explain those. This is nothing but VAR/referee propaganda.”
And another commented: “Insightful? You must be joking. The first two examples you showed we all knew the outcome of those at the time before they even went to VAR.
“Who picked them Sky or Howard Webb? Where were any dubious decisions? All staged for PR” More

Arsenal fans fume as Kiwior ‘stops to put his boot on’ to let Brighton score – but others claim VAR should rule it out

ARSENAL fans were left fuming after Jakub Kiwior stopped to put his BOOT on as Brighton scored. But others claimed the defender’s shoe issue should have seen VAR rule out the Seagulls’ opener in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat on Sunday.

January signing Kiwior racked up another start at the expense of Rob Holding as Arsenal hosted Brighton at the Emirates.
The Gunners knew a win was necessary to keep their title hopes realistically alive.
But after a drab 0-0 in the first half, it was Brighton who eventually drew first blood.
Julian Enciso nipped into the box to fire past Aaron Ramsdale after 51 minutes.

Yet it was Kiwior who drew the ire of Arsenal fans after appearing to stop in his tracks during play.
The centre-back looked to slightly stumble before going to one knee and adjusting his boot.
At the same time, Enciso picked up the ball before slotting it into the net for 1-0.
But while some fans slammed Kiwior for messing around with his shoe, others defended the Pole by claiming he appeared to be stamped on – and therefore VAR should have ruled out Brighton’s strike.

One said: “Embarrassing from Kiwior. Fully deserved for Brighton.”
Another declared: “Kiwior needs to get a grip, shouldn’t be going down there.”
One noted: “Kiwior’s ankle was stepped on from behind and he was on the ground literally a foot away from Enciso as he headed it in. How unaware can VAR get?”
Another added: “Kiwior gets stepped on! VAR no goal!”
Things got worse for Arsenal when Denis Undav put Brighton 2-0 up in the 86th minute.
And Pervis Estupinan ensured the result was a rout with a third in the 96th minute.
The result leaves the Gunners four points behind leaders Man City, who beat Everton 3-0 earlier today and still have a game in hand.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry reveals his five new rules to revolutionise football including extra points for goals

THIERRY HENRY revealed his five new rules to revolutionise football – including extra points for goals. The Arsenal legend knows a thing or two about the beautiful game having scored 417 career goals, including a club-record 228 for the Gunners.

Teams would be penalised for time-wasting by the opposition getting a free-kickCredit: Getty
He also won the World Cup, Euros and Champions League and was part of the Premier League Invincibles in 2003-04.
But now he has turned to coaching and punditry and is a regular on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage.
And on Wednesday night, he revealed his five-step plan to improve the global game.
Henry was made ‘King for a day’ by CBS host Kate Abdo, and was given a crown and a red robe for the joke coronation.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
Abdo said: “As most of you know we have just had a three-day coronation weekend here in Great Britain.
“But if you thought the ancient rituals and gilded pageantry was done, you would be wrong.
“He already has a statue outside The Emirates. And now Thierry Henry gets the biggest honour of them all… he is our king for a day.”
Firstly, Henry wants to get rid of the dark arts of time-wasting – as Newcastle and Brentford have mastered this season.

The Frenchman said: “When a team refuses to play – time-wasting, kicking the ball out – the referee can give a free-kick just like in rugby 25 yards away from goal, you can put the ball wherever you want.
“Just play football, that’s my rule.”
The second rule sees teams who score three goals in a game get an extra point, regardless of the result.
For example, Fulham would have got four points and Leicester one for the Cottagers’ 5-3 win on Monday.
Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher asked what happens if a team scores seven – no doubt in reference to Liverpool’s thumping victory over Manchester United this season – to which Henry confirmed they goal-hungry side get two extra points.
Thirdly, Henry said: “This is a big one for me.
“Referees have to come after the game and talk to the press, please, and wear a mic also.
“I want to hear what you say because they are not that polite sometimes, I wasn’t also at times.
“Please can you explain your mistakes or how great you were, we want to tell you how great you were sometimes or how bad you are like people used to tell us.”
This suggestion got a resounding “yes” of support from Carragher and Micah Richards, especially after recent success in France.
You don’t buy a house without visiting itThierry Henry on signing players
Carra asked: “Would you have more respect for them then?”
Henry replied: “Yes because I can understand someone explaining, ‘This is what I saw – I made a mistake.’ You move on usually.
“What used to bother me is when there was no explanation, they would just go and hide.”
Henry’s fourth role would see sporting directors or whoever overseas transfers do their due diligence.
He said: “You don’t buy a house without visiting it. You go in the morning, you go at night, you hear the noise.
“I’ve seen so many players arrive at places without anyone knowing if they could adapt at the place.
“Do you know what he’s about? Do you know his background?”
Carragher chipped in: “What was the sporting director like at Monaco?” in a cheeky quip at Henry’s failed 20-match spell as manager.
“If a team scores more than three goals in a game, give them an extra point…”King Titi has spoken. 👑 pic.twitter.com/B5gs5njfDj— CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) May 10, 2023

Henry quickly moved on to his fifth and final rule to introduce temporary injury substitutes to prevent teams going down to ten players when someone needs treatment or doctors rushing assessments.
This idea was proposed for the Premier League but was blocked by lawmakers Ifab which prompted a furious reaction from the PFA.
The former forward then added a bonus legislation, allowing presenter Kate Abdo to bring a radiator with her to the studio “because she’s always cold”.
And his suggestions got plenty of love on social media.
One said: “That ref post-match conference looks a MUST thing to have.”
Another wrote: “Interesting rules . . . particularly about the ref having a mic and doing a presser, very much needed.”
