World’s weirdest stadium bigger than Elland Road ‘like fortress from a James Bond film’ never ended up being built

IT LOOKED like a lair fit for a Bond villain. But it was in fact ambitious plans for a football stadium inside a MOUNTAIN.
The Rock stadium would have been one of the weirdest ever
The pitch would have sunk into the ground
It would have been used by Saudi side Al-Ain
It has been compared to a James Bond villain’s lair
The ground would have been in a mountain range
United Arab Emirates side Al-Ain had a design made up for the Rock Stadium that would be situated in the Jebel Hafeet mountain.
MZ Architects had originally wanted to build the ground in the desert but after a visit to the mountain changed their mind.
The location is a popular tourist spot 14 miles south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi city Al-Ain.
The architecture firm was reminded of an Ancient Greek amphitheatre by the location and drew up some innovative ideas.

The Rock Stadium was designed to have a cave-like entrance and to be sunken into the ground.
It would have also featured seats carved out of the natural hills for the visiting spectators.
The roof of the ground would have been modelled after desert hills.
Materials for its construction would have come from the excavated area to make it more sustainable.

The stadium was estimated to have been able to hold up to 40,000 fans.
This would have made it a bigger capacity ground than the likes of Elland Road, Hillsborough Stadium and The City Ground.

The Rock Stadium’s concept designs drew comparisons to that of a villain’s “secret fortress in a James Bond movie”.
However, the ground has not been constructed, and its future is uncertain.
There is no scheduled date for the building to start according to Bloomberg.
Despite being no closer to being created the designs have earned multiple awards.

Ancelotti, 64, has had a remarkable managerial career, having won 25 TROPHIES.
He has managed at glamorous clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Juventus.
He is currently in his second stint at Real Madrid and is expected to move into international management with Brazil at the end of the season.
Former Chelsea flop Alexandre Pato, 34, starred for the Italian while at AC Milan.

The Brazilian forward has revealed that Ancelotti was like “a father” to him and that he lives “with style”.
Incredibly, Pato even compared the Italian to fictional spy James Bond.
In an interview with the Players Tribune, he said: “Ancelotti became like a father to me. He even named his dog Pato.

“Well, at Milan he’d turn up to training in a helicopter.
“He lived in Parma and his wife knew how to fly one. He’d step out like James Bond.
“If anyone lived with style, it was Carlo.”
Pato played for Ancelotti between 2007 and 2009, when he first emerged as one of Europe’s brightest talents.
In 2011, however, he started to have issues with injuries that curtailed his development.
The forward left the Serie A giants in 2013 as he moved back to his homeland with Corinthians.
Pato would later join Chelsea on loan but only featured twice in the Premier League, scoring one goal.
He went on to have spells at Villarreal, Tianjin Tianhai, and Orlando City, he is now playing for Sao Paulo.
His contract expires in December, though there is an option to extend it for a further 12 months.

Meet Aston Martin’s Jessica Hawkins who’s the first woman to test a F1 car in five years and was James Bond stunt driver

MOTORSPORT ace Jessica Hawkins is no stranger to breaking down social barriers. Hawkins, 28, is a former British karting champion and was a stunt driver in James Bond movie No Time To Die.

But last week she battered down another door by becoming the first woman to test an F1 car in half a decade.
Aston Martin revealed Hawkins had been given the chance to get behind the wheel of their 2021 F1 car at the Hungaroring, the venue of F1’s Hungarian Grand Prix, last Thursday.
Hawkins alternated the driving with Felipe Drugovich, the reserve driver of Aston Martin and McLaren and the 2022 F2 champion.
The Brit raced for 26 laps in the F1 car, and was lost for words after her drive.

On the opportunity, Hawkins said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone at AMF1 Team for having the trust in me, believing in me, and for giving me this opportunity.
“It’s taken me every bit of blood, sweat and tears to get here. When I first heard it might be a possibility, I could hardly believe it.
“I’ve had to keep it secret for months now – which was pretty hard!
“It’s been absolutely worth it and it’s given me really valuable insight.

“Nothing will compare to the acceleration and braking of a Formula 1 car and, having looked at the data, I’m really proud of my performance.
“Getting to drive the AMR21 has been a dream come true for me and one I’ve been ready to fulfil for a long time.
“I’ll keep pushing for more and, in the process, I want to inspire other women and let them know they should follow their dream no matter what it is.”
Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack was also pleased with how Hawkins had done.
He said: “We were really impressed by Jessica’s preparation for the test – she worked incredibly hard with our simulator team and that made it an easy decision to put her in the AMR21.
“Jessica approached the opportunity with great maturity; she was up to speed quickly and found a nice rhythm.”
    Lack of Woman in F1
The last woman to be handed the opportunity to drive an F1 car was Colombian Tatiana Calderon with Sauber – now Alfa Romeo – back in October 2018 at the Hermanos Rodriguez track in Mexico City.
Susie Wolff – the wife of Mercedes team principal Toto – was the last woman to compete in an F1 practice session, doing so in 2015.
However, the last time a female driver started an F1 race was back in 1976, when Italian Lella Lombardi drove for RAM Racing.
Barriers are being broken down, however, albeit slowly.
German driver Sophia Floersch currently competes in F3 and became the first woman to score points in the series at the Belgian feature race.
Before her opportunity in the AMR21, Hawkins had been practising in the simulator at their base in Silverstone.
She joined the Aston F1 team in an ambassadorial role in 2021 and has often been seen around the paddock over the course of race weekends.
    James Bond stunt driver
But it has not been all fun and games, and one of the most extreme opportunities for her arose from a Facebook post she was tagged in.
Hawkins had fallen victim to the most common killer of motorsport careers, a lack of funds.
However, when she was notified about a role as a stunt driver it allowed her to raise funds before becoming a W Series driver, and it even landed her a part in James Bond movie No Time To Die.
On her stunt driver career, she told the Mirror: “I stopped racing a good few years before W Series purely because I’d run out of budget to continue on my motorsport journey.
“A friend then tagged me on a Facebook post which said they were looking for a female driver with good car control.
“At the time, it didn’t say what it was for, but I just thought ‘I’ll send them my CV and see what happens’.
“It turns out that it was for a show called Fast and Furious Live. All of the stunts that were in the movie, we performed live.”
She continued: “Bond was actually my first movie.
“There was quite a lot of pressure, but I was confident in my ability and I had an incredible team around me.

“I did, however, always used to tell my mother that I wanted to be an actor one day; that was something I was very serious about. Aside from football, it was another dream of mine.

“I’m the kind of person who is happy to give anything a go, and so I didn’t have a problem putting my name forward for a casting call for ‘Mocro Maffia’, a crime drama in the Netherlands. I can remember speaking to my agent about it: ‘What are you doing?!’
“But I wanted to give it a go; I asked him to let them know I was interested and shortly after I was sent a script and told I had three weeks to prepare for my audition.
“Like I said, I was always keen to try out, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t nervous – of course I was. This was my first time trying anything like this; I wasn’t going into it with any experience whatsoever.”
On being the next 007, he added: “”I know Daniel Craig is giving up the role of James Bond soon… is that the next job for me? I’d have to work on my English a little more, I think!”

Drenthe played for Real Madrid between 2007 and 2012, winning a host of trophies along the way.
He spent the final season of his time at Santiago Bernabeu on loan at Everton in the Premier League.
The wide man made 27 appearances for the Goodison club, scoring four times and laying on seven assists.

I’m an ex-Premier League star who became an actor – I nailed my audition as a gangster and could be the next James Bond

FORMER Everton star Royston Drenthe has claimed he could be the next James Bond after turning his hand to acting following his retirement from football. The Dutchman, 36, spent five years at Real Madrid from 2007 to 2012, winning the LaLiga title and Spanish Super Cup.

He successfully landed a role playing a gangster
During the end of his stint with Los Blancos, he had a season-long loan in England with the Toffees, bagging four goals in 27 games.
He then left the Spanish capital 11 years ago and had spells with the likes of Reading and Sheffield Wednesday.
Drenthe eventually hung up his boots last year – having already started his acting career by landing a role as a gangster in hit Dutch crime drama Mocro Maffia in 2021.
That was after he had tried his hand at rap back in 2017 when he released the track “Paranoia”.

But Drenthe insists acting is something he is far more passionate about than music.
Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes Fanzone, he said: “A lot has been made about my ‘rap career’, but in truth that’s just something I wanted to try out; I was never serious about pursuing a career in it.
“I did, however, always used to tell my mother that I wanted to be an actor one day; that was something I was very serious about. Aside from football, it was another dream of mine.

He continued: “For three weeks I studied and studied the lines until I could remember them inside out. And when it came to the day of my audition, the casting team couldn’t believe it was my first time acting… they were so surprised I’d not done anything like this before.
“They told me they’d let me know whether or not I’d got the job within a couple of weeks, and three days later I heard back from them and was told I was successful.
“I loved it, I’m not going to lie – it was a great experience and something I wouldn’t rule out doing again.
“I know Daniel Craig is giving up the role of James Bond soon… is that the next job for me? I’d have to work on my English a little more, I think!”
Away from acting, Drenthe has also spoken about his time working under manager David Moyes at Goodison Park.
And while he admits they had a volatile relationship at the time, he now appreciates what the ex-Everton boss was trying to do.
He added: “Back then, I was firmly of the belief that Moyes was simply out to prove to the other players that he could get under my skin. We’d argue and I’d just think ‘What the f***?’ ‘Is he taking the p***?’.
“And while there are certain occasions where I can say I still feel I was in the right, on the whole I’d say he was. Ultimately, he wanted to get the best out of me as a player, he wanted to help me, I just couldn’t see that at the time.
“But people change, and I can look back now a lot older and wiser, and I can understand why he did what he did with me.
“I really like him as a manager, too. I think that when he’s given the right club, with the right amount of time, he can do great things. We saw it at Everton and we’re seeing it again, now, at West Ham.
“Despite the club being in a difficult position earlier on in the season, he seems to have steered them away from relegation and they’re in a really strong position in Europe.
“Sometimes certain moves just don’t work out for you, and I think ultimately that was the case at Manchester United.

“When you take over a club like that, the expectation is on you straight from the offset; you don’t have time to settle in, or to get things wrong.
“And, as I said, I feel like Moyes is the kind of person who needs that time, to implement his own ideas.”
