When did Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink retire from playing football?

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink retired in 2008 after nearly two decades as a professional player.

The star, who was born on March 27, 1972, in Paramaribo, Suriname, began his football career as a goalkeeper.

He later moved to become a right winger, before taking on the role of forward.

Jimmy made his professional debut in 1990, playing for Dutch team Telstar.

He had moved to the Netherlands with his family at the end of the 1970s.

In August 1995, Hasselbaink signed for Portuguese Primeira Divisão side Campomaiorense.

The chairman of the club at the time gave the player, who had actually been born Jerrel Floyd Hasselbaink, the nickname “Jimmy” – a name which stuck with him for the rest of his career.

In the summer of 1996, Hasselbaink was signed by Boavista, another team in Portugal.

He moved to Premier League side Leeds United in 1997 but was bought by Spanish club Atlético Madrid for £10million in 1999.

Hasselbaink was then signed by Chelsea in 2000 for a club record fee of £15million.

He scored 69 goals for the Blues in 136 appearances, and was top scorer for three of the four years he was at the club.

In 2002 he suffered a hamstring injury and worked as a pundit for ITV’s 2002 Fifa World Cup coverage while he recovered.

In July 2004, Hasselbaink signed for Middlesborough before transferring to Charlton Athletic in 2006.

He then moved to Cardiff City but left the club in 2008.

Hasselbaink has also represented the Netherlands, earning 23 caps and scoring nine goals for the national team.

He also played at the 1998 Fifa World Cup.

After retiring from playing, Hasselbaink moved into coaching.

He was announced as the new manager of Belgian Second Division club Royal Antwerp in 2013, and in 2014 he was appointed by English Football League Two side Burton Albion.

He worked with Queens Park Rangers from 2015 to 2016, after which he moved to Northampton Town.

Jimmy returned to Burton Albion in January 2021.

In March 2023 it was reported that Hasselbaink was to take up a role as coach for the England national team.

The move has reunited him with his former Middlesbrough teammate Gareth Southgate.

According to reports, Jimmy married Natalie Hasselbaink in 2012.

The couple are thought to have held their wedding at Cowarth Park in Ascot.
