But they had to leave it late at the Jose Alvalade Stadium with both of their goals coming late on.

Substitute striker Paulinho headed Sporting into the lead in the 90th minute as he got on the end of Pedro Goncalves’ corner.

Arthur then replaced former Spurs starlet Marcus Edwards in the 92nd minute, with the Brazilian off celebrating moments later from a stunning solo effort.

The 24-year-old picked up the ball down the left channel after being found by Paulinho, where he skipped past Cristian Romero before nutmegging Emerson Royal.

And he then coolly slotted his strike under the legs of Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to send the hosts into delirium.

He was mobbed by his jubilant team-mates with the player showing boss Ruben Amorim why he signed him from Estoril at the start of the month.

Fans were left in awe by Arthur’s audacious double nutmeg, as one Twitter user said: “F***ing hell that Arthur lad for Sporting has just scored an unreal double nutmeg.

“Sensational. Straight off the bench to humiliate Emerson and Lloris.”
