He was joined by Scottish football legend Ally McCoist as two dramatic stoppage-time goals saw the Championship side book their place at Wembley.

But viewers were completely unaware during the coverage that it could well be the last time Tyldesley commentates on an FA Cup match.

He confirmed the news on social media on Saturday evening, saying: “Maybe the last FA Cup tie I’ll ever call.

“Thank you for the big finish!!”

This led to a host of fans pouring in with messages as they called on ITV not to make the mistake of ditching Tyldesley – who appears set to miss out on the channel’s FA Cup final broadcast.

One said: “ITV’s biggest mistake not keeping you as lead commentator. Even bigger mistake that BT/TNT didn’t continue to have you as the voice of UCL. CBS’s gain.”

Another added: “Ahhh, what a way to go out. You were class today as always. I hope it isn’t the last one!”

A third replied: “I really hope it’s not your last Clive. Loved your comms today and the chemistry with Ally is the best in the business.”

And a fifth said: “BBC for final then – criminal by ITV not using you – I mean we’re not talking Motson or Davies here it’s not even close.
