MASON GREENWOOD has scooped another accolade during his impressive breakthrough season after he was named the most accurate shooter in the Premier League.
The 18-year-old, who had only made one appearance in England’s top-flight prior to this campaign, topped efforts from potential Golden Boot winners Jamie Vardy and Sadio Mane.
The England Under-21 international has hit the target with 57.1 per cent of his shots this term, according to figures from FBREF.com.
January loan signing Odion Ighalo wouldn’t be far behind with a 50 per cent accuracy rating from his eight Prem shots.
But the Nigerian is ineligible because the figures – which exclude penalties – are based on those who meet the minimum requirement (an average of .395 shots per squad game).
Greenwood meanwhile leads the pack with 12 of the 21 shots he has attempted in the Premier League finding the target on route to hitting the back of the net five times.
He has already been hailed for his ability with both feet and was named Manchester United’s most talented youngster by Romelu Lukaku.
But surprisingly it is Chelsea full-back Emerson who is second spot, with the Italian boasting a 53.8 per cent shot accuracy from his 13 efforts this season.
They probably need to find that one like a Rooney, right at the start of his career that’s going to carry them forward. Can it be Mason Greenwood?
Michael Owen on Manchester United
Leicester City marksman Jamie Vardy, who has smashed home 19 goals in 26 league games, manages an impressive third place.
The former England striker has tested the countries top goalkeepers with 30 of the 57 shots he has attempted.
Wolves’ enterprising defender Matt Doherty and Chelsea veteran Olivier Giroud make up the top five on the leaderboard.
Greenwood’s achievement came just days after Michael Owen likened the United ace to Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney.
He told Premier League Productions, as quoted by Metro: “I still think that Manchester United could do with – I know it’s impossible but if they could find that next Wayne Rooney, that next 19, 20, 21-year-old who was going to be there for the next 10 years.
“They’ve almost been getting by with Ibrahimovic, getting by with Ighalo.
“These players are very good but coming to the end of their career but they probably need to find that one like a Rooney, right at the start of his career that’s going to carry them forward.
“Can it be Mason Greenwood? It might be that they use these types of players while he grows with them.
“It’s all fascinating at the moment at Manchester United, a real, interesting puzzle to solve. ‘But I do think they’re going in the right direction.”
