Cole Palmer so good he’s forcing gaffers to break one of Dream Team’s golden rules

THE latest episode of the Cole Palmer (£6m) show was one of the best yet.Chelsea’s talisman banked 25 points against Tottenham on Sunday to underline his Dream Team pedigree in emphatic style.Who needs European fixtures when you’re this good?Credit: Dream TeamGranted, he was helped out by brainless fouls from Spurs midfielders Yves Bissouma (£2.5m) and Pape Matar Sarr (£3m) that gifted the visitors two penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But Palmer’s spot-kicks, the second of which was an audacious Panenka, only told half the story of his performance. The 22-year-old was credited with a ‘fantasy assist’ by stats providers Opta for his decisive hand in Enzo Fernandez’s (£4.3m) goal, which put the Blues into the lead in the second half.As if three goal involvements weren’t enough, Palmer also earned five bonus points, the maximum available for a single game, via four successful dribbles, four fouls won, three accurate crosses, one interception and a pass completion rate of 79%.When all was said and done, Palmer finished the weekend as the top performer of Gameweek 14 by a wide margin of ten points – Bryan Mbeumo (£4m) is his closest rival at this stage on 15 points.A touch of classCredit: EPAMore broadly, the former Manchester City youngster now averages 11.1 points-per-game this season, the highest average among all players.Palmer is evidently a special talent and so the question has to be asked, should Dream Team managers break one of the game’s golden rules to accommodate him?Generally speaking, every gaffer should endeavour to target as many fixtures as possible in search of plentiful points. Most read in FootballThis being one of Dream Team’s most prominent commandments for the simple reason that more games equals more point-scoring opportunities.Palmer has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists this seasonCredit: GettyIf Player A averages 8.5 points-per-game and Player B averages 6.2 points-per-game then the former is probably the better option in a single game shootout. However, if Player A is due to fulfil three fixtures across the next three Gameweeks while Player B is scheduled to play five times then the latter is likely to produce more points over the given time period. It doesn’t always work out like this because there are other factors to consider but the logic is clear.Prior the start of this season, it appeared as if Palmer would be an essential asset as the prospect of him supplementing his league returns with Thursday night points courtesy of Conference League mismatches was hugely appealing. However, Enzo Maresca has opted to manage his star player’s workload.Palmer wasn’t even included in Chelsea’s European squad for the league phase and he didn’t feature in the Carabao Cup prior the club’s exit at the hands of Newcastle. This approach has pay dividends as the league regulars have stayed fresh while the second-string players have enjoyed themselves in the Conference League.Nkunku has fun in the Conference League while the likes of Palmer and Nicolas Jackson rest upWhile Maresca’s rotation policy has set the West Londoners on course for a successful season, Dream Team bosses have been left to fantasise about what could have been had Palmer also been strutting his stuff in the additional competitions. He boasts the highest points-per-game average but since he’s played just 15 games, he’s currently behind Mohamed Salah (£7.6m), Erling Haaland (£8.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) in terms of overall points because those three stars have all featured in at least 20 games this campaign. However, the fact Palmer is fourth overall despite having only been active in the league is truly remarkable. Many of the elite Dream Team gaffers tend to ignore such players entirely because of their limited schedules but Palmer breaks the mould and this Gameweek is a perfect example. There are seven relevant European fixtures happening in midweek but how many of the players involved will match Palmer’s score of 25 from the weekend?Son Heung-min (£5.2m) is the closest player in which a chance but he’ll have to bank 13 points away to Rangers on Thursday night just to draw level with Palmer.READ MORE SUN STORIESMaresca is managing Palmer’s workload this seasonCredit: GettyGaffers should continue to target the additional competitions but if there was ever a player to break a golden rule for it’s Chelsea’s main man.And it goes without saying that Palmer will be a must-have asset from Gameweek 16 when the focus will be purely on the Premier League over Christmas and New Year.BetMGM sign up offerBetMGM: Get £40 in free bets — HERE**New cust only. 7 days to opt in by placing a £10 qualifying bet at 1/1 (2.0) odds or greater to receive 4x Free Bets: 1 x £10 horse racing, 1 x £10 Bet Builder, 1 x £10 Acca and 1 x £10 football. 7 day expiry. how the Blues players rated…Robert Sanchez – 4The home fans were on to him for the entirety of the first half after he lumped the ball out of play early on.Not an awful lot he could’ve done about the goals, and he did recover well in the second half.Moises Caicedo – 6Chelsea’s best defender on the day, he put in some strong challenges inverting into midfield and put in a solid performance once again.Fortunate to escape a card for a late challenge on Pape Matar Sarr, before a brilliant second half.Benoit Badiashile – 4Looked uncomfortable playing as a left-footed centre-back on the right-hand side.Often didn’t help Robert Sanchez by playing him into trouble, and looked awkward when trying to progress from the back.Levi Colwill – 6Allowed Solanke to get in front of him and finish brilliantly at the near post for the opening goal.Didn’t have an awful lot to do in the second half, which was perhaps a good sign, as the whole defence was improved.Marc Cucurella – 4Slipped at the vital moment to practically set Spurs through and open the scoring within five minutes, before slipping AGAIN which saw Kulusevski double the lead.Recovered really well after swapping his ice skates for football boots, nabbing the assist for Sancho’s goal and giving a solid showing for the whole second half. That said, he has to be marked down for the two goals.Romeo Lavia – 8Energetic, strong and smooth on the turn in midfield, with some brilliant line-breaking passes too.Much the same as Caicedo, he is becoming a dependable, impressive body in the Chelsea midfield.Came off at half-time for Malo Gusto, which must have been a tactical switch.Enzo Fernandez (c) – 9Didn’t misplace a single one of his 28 passes in the first half, the same as Lavia – before adding a stunning, game-winning, left-footed volley to his myriad of impressive actions. His best game in a Chelsea shirt came in one of their biggest matches of the season, as he continues his remarkable run of goal contributions.Pedro Neto – 7A threat on the right wing in the first half for Chelsea, he pressed well and came close to scoring Palmer’s deflected effort.A constant danger, he was creative but slightly lacked in end product if you’re being critical.Cole Palmer – 9Mis-kicked a chance in the first twenty minutes you would usually bet your house on him scoring, before coming close again with a shot from range moments later.Calmly dispatched his equalising penalty into the bottom corner, before setting up Enzo Fernandez to put his side in the lead.Added the cherry on the Chelsea cake with an ice-cold panenka from the penalty spot.Jadon Sancho – 8Excellent finish to pull one back for the Blues and spark hope among supporters.Generally sharp in build-up, and tricky feet as always, with a great slide-rule pass to see Caicedo win the penalty for Chelsea’s equaliser.Nicolas Jackson – 6Looked a threat going forward for Chelsea in spells, but failed to get himself on the scoresheet on this occasion.Seemed troubled as he departed the pitch for the oncoming Christopher Nkunku.SUBS…Malo Gusto (Romeo Lavia, HT) – 5Was more direct and definitely an improvement on Malacia, albeit on the opposite flank. However, still wasn’t able to be the difference which Ruben Amorim would’ve been looking for in this one.Christopher Nkunku (Nicolas Jackson, 76)Got in some good positions and pressed well, remaining an outlet for the Chelsea attack when they countered.Ultimately not enough time to have the impact he would’ve liked.Noni Madueke (Pedro Neto, 86)Not enough time to impact the game in Man Utd’s Dan Ashworth farce gets even worse as it’s revealed how much they really paid for ex-Newcastle chief

Meanwhile, Jason Wilcox thought it was all a mess under previous boss Erik ten Hag but was part of the team that encouraged him to stay after every other candidate ran for cover. There is word Ashworth did not favour appointing his successor and new head coach Ruben Amorim, preferring an English manager with more experience in our game. Forget Ten Hag and Amorim’s tactics, this is simply the WORST Man Utd team since Sir Alex Ferguson retired

MANCHESTER UNITED look like a team who have only recently been introduced to playing football.Little wonder, really, given that they seem to have different people telling them how to do it every week.Man Utd suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on SaturdayCredit: ReutersIt was a second successive loss for new head coach Ruben AmorimCredit: ReutersThe word is that Erik ten Hag’s methods were so complicated that the players genuinely did not know what he wanted them to do.In comes a new backroom team to work with the former boss and more new ideas are loaded into the players. Then Ten Hag goes and one of those coaches, Ruud van Nistelrooy, tries to get a tune out of an off-key outfit. Now Ruben Amorim talks about the side like he is talking about how to teach a toddler to walk. They were all between centre-backs!Goodness knows what the new set-piece coach is telling them as well.It took less than two minutes before Forest scored from a corner courtesy of a header from Nikola Milenkovic.Rasmus Hojlund did level but two minutes after the break Gibbs-White had a shot on goal. Now even he did not expect it to go in. But a slight swerve on the ball of no more than a foot had Onana flummoxed. He still looked bewildered when Chris Wood sent a looping header over him before Bruno Fernandes got one back.Yet hope is in short supply at Old Trafford right now. This is their worst team since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.Until they get a decent striker it is not going to change either. Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been terrible buys. They are not good enough for United. For the second Forest goal Morgan Gibbs-White shot is straight down the middle along the floor. It maybe swerves a foot at most and he somehow couldn’t stop it. For the third he just let it loop over his head. He cannot command his area.LENY YORO – 6The 19-year-old was making his first start for United and immediately looked unphased. Ruben Amorim has high hopes for someone he calls ‘a special talent’.He is easing him into the team after his summer injury and subbed him just past the hour.MATTHIJS DE LIGT – 5Amorim has tasked him with bringing the ball out from the back to set United moves going.Looked good in the first balf but what was he doing for Forest’s third as he let Chris Wood’s header go thinking it was going wide.LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 4It was said his lack of height would not be a problem but it was after 80 seconds here as Nikola Milenkovic headed home on 80 seconds. Then for Forest’s third he didn’t known what to do as the ball went over him at the far post.AMAD DIALLO – 7Looking more and more like a United star with his positive forward runs from his new wing-back role.Had a couple of good chances himself but shots were weak, then made a great run and cut back before setting up Fernandes for United’s second.MANUEL UGARTE – 7Looked constantly concerned with his defensive duties and understandably. Is a solid presence on the pitch though and a decent buy compared to plenty of others.KOBBIE MAINOO – 6Ugarte was having a good game in front of the back three allowing Mainoo to get further forward in the second-half when he became more of a threat.DIOGO DALOT – 6Compared to Amad on the opposite flank did not have much of an influence. Got forward a lot more in the second-half.BRUNO FERNANDES – 7Was always involved. But does the captain really have to contest every single decision the referee makes against his team.Made up for his loose pass that gave away possession for Forest’s second by scoring a fine goal himself.RASMUS HOJLUND – 6That’s three goals in three games after his pair against Bodo Glimt but there is still not enough movement from the front man.ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 5Not his best game and looked far from happy when he was hauled off early in the second-half for Marcus Rashford.SUBSTITUTIONS…MARCUS RASHFORD (for Garnacho, 58) – 6These are the games he should be starting and starring in but that’s just not the case.MAZRAOUI (for Yoro 66) – 6One of those the recruitment team did at least get right.HARRY MAGUIRE (for De Ligt 65) – 6When Amorim decides on his best starting eleven Maguire should be in it.JOSHUA ZIRKZEE (for Ugarte 76) – 5Not surprisingly failed to have an impact.MASON MOUNT (for Fernandes 76) – 6Amorim has high hopes for him but he is still to convince the United faithful. Needs a long injury free run. More

Not an awful lot he could’ve done about the goals, and he did recover well in the second half.Moises Caicedo – 6Chelsea’s best defender on the day, he put in some strong challenges inverting into midfield and put in a solid performance once again. Fortunate to escape a card for a late challenge on Pape Matar Sarr, before a brilliant second half.Benoit Badiashile – 4Looked uncomfortable playing as a left-footed centre-back on the right-hand side. Often didn’t help Robert Sanchez by playing him into trouble, and looked awkward when trying to progress from the back.Levi Colwill – 6Allowed Solanke to get in front of him and finish brilliantly at the near post for the opening goal. Didn’t have an awful lot to do in the second half, which was perhaps a good sign, as the whole defence was improved.Marc Cucurella – 4 Slipped at the vital moment to practically set Spurs through and open the scoring within five minutes, before slipping AGAIN which saw Kulusevski double the lead.Recovered really well after swapping his ice skates for football boots, nabbing the assist for Sancho’s goal and giving a solid showing for the whole second half. Added the cherry on the Chelsea cake with an ice-cold panenka from the penalty spot.Jadon Sancho – 8Excellent finish to pull one back for the Blues and spark hope among supporters. Generally sharp in build-up, and tricky feet as always, with a great slide-rule pass to see Caicedo win the penalty for Chelsea’s equaliser.Nicolas Jackson – 6Looked a threat going forward for Chelsea in spells, but failed to get himself on the scoresheet on this occasion. Seemed troubled as he departed the pitch for the oncoming Christopher Nkunku.SUBS: Malo Gusto (Romeo Lavia, HT) – 5Was more direct and definitely an improvement on Malacia, albeit on the opposite flank. However, still wasn’t able to be the difference which Ruben Amorim would’ve been looking for in this one.Christopher Nkunku (Nicolas Jackson, 76)Got in some good positions and pressed well, remaining an outlet for the Chelsea attack when they countered.
