Las Vegas Grand Prix in chaos BEFORE race start after retro show cars leak OIL on track

THE Las Vegas Grand Prix hit a bump in the road before it even began when two show cars leaked oil on the track.Prior to the race, all 20 drivers were chauffeured around the circuit in retro cars.

However, just an hour before lights out, at least two of the cars began leaking oil onto the track – right at the front of the starting grid.
The 1950s-era convertible driving McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri appeared to be one of the vehicles with the issue.
A retro Mercedes-Benz coupe, which was carrying Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez around the track, also appeared to leak.
The incident resulted in a build-up of oil on the left side of the track.

Reports claim that Max Verstappen was subsequently left furious as the spillage occurred next to his starting position.
Stewards were seen covering the patch with a powder in an attempt to limit any possible damage.
However, fans were quick to blast organisers for yet another issue with the inaugural race weekend in Vegas.
One person tweeted: “Bro #LasVegasGP getting off to a terrible start and it hasn’t even started yet. How does a parade car spill oil on the start finish.”

Another added: “You couldn’t make this stuff up. It’s gone from the most hyped race of the calendar to the most problematic and cringe. What a mess. All I can do is facepalm.”
While a third wrote: “More issues for the #LasVegasGP Car for driver parade has dropped oil all on the track. What an absolute failure this has been.”
Discussing the potential consequences of the oil leak, Sky Sports F1 presenter Danica Patrick said: “That’s definitely unfortunate for those on the inside.
“This is going to be a loss of grip. This is very unfortunate. I don’t know what they’re going to be able to do about it.
“Are they going to be able to run cars over it before? Probably not. It’s a busy grid. This is an issue.”
Several cars appeared to be affected by the spill at the start of the race.
The likes of Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, Perez and Fernando Alonso all made contact as a result of the lack of grip on track.
A number of issues had already hampered the highly-anticipated Las Vegas GP.
There was a significant delay to the first practice session on Friday after Sainz drove over an unsealed manhole cover, causing significant damage to the floor of his car.
The session subsequently started at 2:30am local time and ended at 4am with no fans present.
Verstappen went on to win the action-packed race, with Charles Leclerc finishing second and Perez third.
But it did not go to plan for Norris, who crashed out on the third lap.
The 24-year-old collided with the barriers at around 180mph before sliding down a straight and coming to a stop at the turn 12 run-off.
He was taken to hospital but later discharged with no significant injuries.
Vegas was a hotspot for a-list celebrities on Saturday night, with the likes of David Beckham, Shaquille O’Neal, Brad Pitt, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Paris Hilton all in attendance. More

Dressed in an all-white Elvis Presley-style race suite, the world champion belted out a rendition of the singer’s hit about this gambling mecca.
It was his 18th win of the season but this time he was made to fight for it after picking up a five-second penalty on the first lap.
He had a running battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who started on pole and eventually came home in second place after pipping Sergio Perez on the final lap.
The Mexican choked on the final lap for the second successive race as he was unable to hold on.

Verstappen, who had blasted this race as “99 per cent entertainment” said: “It was a tough one.
“I tried to go for it at the start. I just ran out of grip, so ended up a bit wide.
“The stewards gave me a penalty for that and it put us on the backfoot.
“I had to pass quite a few cars and there was the Safety Car, so at that point there was a lot going on… Definitely a lot of fun.”

Leclerc added: “What a race! I enjoyed it so much. I’m of course disappointed to only finish second, but that’s the best we could do.
“At the start Max on the inside lost a little bit of the grip and brought me onto the outside [of the track] but we had good pace, we passed him back, and we were really strong overall. So that was a really good race.
“The weekend didn’t start the way it had to start but I am so happy it ended that way.
“It’s such an incredible sport and I today is no better race than for the first race in Vegas. The energy around the city is incredible and I at least really enjoyed today.”
Verstappen’s win means Red Bull have set a new record for the most wins in a season by a team – surpassing Mercedes’ 19 victories from 2016.
The Dutchman has now equalled Sebastian Vettel on 53 career wins, the joint-third most on the all-time winners’ list.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had eventful races as Mercedes’ hopes of a return to form were ended.
Boss Toto Wolff is under more pressure to turn the team around after a miserable two years.
Hamilton, who had come into this weekend saying the team had learned their lessons from the Brazilian GP, was only good enough for seventh after picking up a puncture in a tangle with Oscar Piastri.
And Russell came home in eighth place but only after serving a five-second penalty for banging into Verstappen.
Lando Norris crashed out on the third lap after inexplicably losing control of his McLaren at high speed.

For Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, they will be hoping for A Little Less conversation and a little more action at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

“Elvis left his mark on Vegas and the world, becoming synonymous with the glitz, the flash, and the energy of the strip, something we are hoping to replicate as we take to the track on Saturday night.”

Welcome to SunSport’s live blog of the Las Vegas Grand Prix!
Charles Leclerc will start on pole in Sin City after a superb qualifying performance.
The 26-year-old’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz finished just behind him in qualifying but will be forced to start the race in 12th after a 10-place grid penalty.
The Spaniard caused the first practice session at the Las Vegas Grand Prix to be cancelled after less than ten minutes of action when he drove over a loose manhole cover.
CCTV footage from the track showed the moment Sainz’s car caused a huge outburst of sparks as the bottom of his car was ravaged by the cover.
The freak accident at the newly-created street circuit caused irreparable damage to his engine and chassis.
The damage meant Sainz would need to take a third energy store component, with drivers only allowed two for the full season.
Ferrari asked for an exception to the rules to make penalty-free repairs on the car due to the “highly unusual external circumstances”.
However, race stewards rejected this request and handed Sainz a ten-place grid penalty.
Meanwhile, F1 champion Max Verstappen will start second on the grid, while Lewis Hamilton has work to do in tenth. More

Max Verstappen in Roy Keane-style rant as F1 star AGAIN blasts Las Vegas Grand Prix with ‘National League’ dig

MAX VERSTAPPEN blasted the Las Vegas Grand Prix — saying it is more like the National League than Champions League.Red Bull’s three-time world champion is proving a problem for Formula One bosses on the same scale as the loose drain covers, tumbling share price or angry fans demanding refunds.
Max Verstappen held no bars back in giving his thoughts of this weekend’s F1 actionCredit: Rex
He refuses to dance to F1’s drumbeat, undermining their attempts to polish this turd of a grand prix.
Verstappen has never been afraid to speak his mind but now he carries much more sway.
And when asked about a street track that is more about landmarks than overtaking, the Dutchman was brutally honest.
He said: “I think Monaco is the Champions League . . . this is more like the National League.”

Verstappen, 26, came into this weekend labelling the event “99 per cent entertainment and one per cent race”.
He was one of a handful of drivers to refuse F1’s request to attend a party in the Wynn hotel in the early hours of Thursday, while others toed the party line.
Verstappen added: “When I was a kid it was about the emotion of the sport, that’s what I fell in love with and not the show around it.
“A racing car on a street circuit doesn’t really come alive. It’s not that exciting.

“It’s more about proper race tracks — Spa, Monza, these kinds of places. They have a lot of emotion and passion.
“I understand the fans may need something to do around the track but it’s more important you make them understand what we do as a sport.
“Most of them just come to have a party, drink, see a DJ play or a performance act.
“I can do that all over the world, I can go to Ibiza and get completely s**t-faced and have a good time.
“People come and they become a fan of what? They want to see their favourite artist and go out and have a crazy night.
“But they don’t actually understand what we are doing and what we are putting on the line to perform.
“I love Vegas, but not to drive an F1 car. I love to go out, have a few drinks, throw everything on red, to be a bit crazy and have nice food.
“But like I said, emotion, passion, it’s not there.”
Roy Keane famously said Man Utd fans were too busy eating prawnsCredit: Getty
The Dutchman’s rant may draw comparisons to Manchester United icon Roy Keane.
The football hardman made similar claims to Verstappen’s about some of the Old Trafford crowd’s lack of knowledge of football back in 2000.
Then, he said fans were too busy eating prawn sandwiches rather than creating an atmosphere at Old Trafford during a Champions League group stage tie against Dynamo Kyiv.
Keane commented: “Away from home our fans are fantastic, I’d call them the hardcore fans.
“But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don’t realise what’s going on out on the pitch.
“I don’t think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell ‘football’, never mind understand it.”
F1 tried to appease disgruntled fans with a derisory $200 voucher for merchandise, but no refund.
Some way to commemorate their EIGHT MINUTES of action in Friday’s first practice before it was red flagged and they were later turfed out.
While Verstappen was shooting down F1’s very own Fyre Fest, Carlos Sainz — whose Ferrari was wrecked by the loose drain cover in Friday practice — was taking pop-shots at the way the sport is governed.
FIA stewards had to punish him for taking a new engine because it is in the rules.
But the subtext is Mercedes were rumoured to be lining up a protest had they spared him a ten-place grid penalty, which could impact the battle for second in the constructors’ championship.
Sainz fumed: “My mechanics have to invest five hours putting together a new car and, on top of that, we get a ten-place grid penalty for something that we have nothing to do with.
“I’m disappointed. At the same time, not surprised, because there have been many cases this year that I think this sport has proven that it can do things a lot better.
“I’m surprised that the governing body doesn’t have the power to, in cases of force majeure, overrule this kind of situation where it’s so clear something is completely out of the team’s and driver’s control.
“But for some reason there will be rival teams pushing for me to get a penalty, which surprises me in a way.
“There’s too much money involved for a team not to threaten to apply for a penalty for me.
“I am very upset with the whole situation, with the sport. I’m in a bad mood because I expected more.”

Vegas F1 bosses FAIL to apologise to shocked fans for manhole cover farce that wrecked practice, claiming ‘it happens’

LAS VEGAS GP bosses have released a staggering statement over their shambolic handling of their inaugural race – telling disgruntled fans: “It happens”.Fans had spent THOUSANDS of dollars to watch EIGHT minutes of practice before it was scrapped after a drain cover slammed into Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari sparking a safety fear.

The delay meant that second practice did now start until 2:30am – however, fans were ejected from their seats an hour before because of staff contractual hours.
Fans have demanded refunds from F1, who are organising their own race, and responded with a statement which failed to apologise.
And said: “We have all been to events, like concerts, games and even other Formula One races, that have been cancelled because of factors like weather or technical issues.
“It happens, and we hope people will understand.”

The statement was released by Renee Wilm, CEO, Las Vegas Grand Prix and Stefano Domenicali, CEO, Formula One and likely to draw even more backlash.
In trying to explain their reasoning, the full version said: “Our top priority at Formula One is the safety and security of our drivers, employees, and fans.
“Responsibility for the oversight of a Formula One event falls with Formula One as the commercial rights holder of the sport, the FIA as the regulatory body, and the local promoter, in this case the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“This is important for those who are new to racing to understand.

“Last night, approximately nine minutes into the first Free Practice session, a water valve cover broke on the straight on Las Vegas Boulevard.
“At that time the FIA, which is responsible for the safe running of the activities on the circuit, stopped the session so that we could look at the broken water valve cover and inspect the track. This has happened on occasion at other tracks at other races around the world.
“The precautionary step of removing all of the water valve covers on the entire track and filling them with sand and asphalt was undertaken.
“The entire process, from determination of the issue to remediation, took approximately five hours.
“The decision to remediate in this way was taken out of an abundance of caution and because the safety of drivers, trackside marshals and officials and our fans is always our highest priority.
“We thank the contractors who worked expeditiously to resolve the situation so quickly.
“As a result, the first Free Practice ended early. We moved ahead with the second Free Practice session at approximately 2:30 AM PT for 90 minutes.
“The decision to run the second Free Practice session at 2:30 AM PT was supported by all parties to ensure the sporting integrity of the remainder of the event.
“We would like to thank the drivers, mechanics and all the teams for their patience and commitment last night to ensure that we could run the session successfully.
“Now, let us turn to the fan experience.
Course staff pictured trying to fix the broken manhole cover during practiceCredit: Getty
“The delay in the start of the second Free Practice session from midnight to 2:30 AM PT created risks for our employees and our fans.
“We made the decision to close the fan areas that are under LVGP’s purview at 1:30 AM PT and send fans home.
“Let us explain why. First, we were concerned about our public safety and security officials who had been in service for a long time and who are being asked to work for the next three nights.
“We thank Clark County’s Metro Police Department, Department of Public Works and other public safety officials for their incredible support during the event and also as we re-opened the track early this morning.
“Second, we were concerned about our transportation employees who are responsible for driving our fans back to hotels.
“By Federal law, they were bumping up against the amount of time they can legally and safely drive buses.
“Finally, our hospitality staff needed the ability to clean and resupply our guest areas to ensure that the fan experience is optimal for everyone over the coming days.
“We know this was disappointing. We hope our fans will understand based on this explanation that we had to balance many interests, including the safety and security of all participants and the fan experience over the whole race weekend.
“We have all been to events, like concerts, games and even other Formula 1 races, that have been cancelled because of factors like weather or technical issues. It happens, and we hope people will understand.
“So how will we address this tonight?
“We have worked overnight to adjust our staffing plans across security, transportation and hospitality to ensure that we can function and serve fans with the best possible experience in the event of an extended race schedule.
“We are excited about the racing today and thank our entire team and our fans for their support.
“We know this is going to be a great event. With that let’s get back to racing.”
