The Australian’s mistake during the closing stages of the season-ending race cost Hamilton an historic seventh world title.
Instead, Max Verstappen was able to capitalise on a safety car period to overtake his rival and clinch his maiden championship.

“The poor guy is a person who has been attacked and abused. Michael Masi went through hell. Hell! And if I see there is an opportunity that the FIA needs, and Michael Masi is the right person, I will bring him.”
The incident in 2021 occurred a week before Ben Sulayam became FIA president, with Masi later replaced as race director and left the FIA last year.
His decision to allow the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves with just two laps remaining proved costly for the Brit.

Russell, who earned a podium with a P3 finish in Sunday’s race, had completed a Grand Prix distance of 58 laps over the course of the testing day when he was forced to call it quits early.
A suspected component failure in his W14 car caused it to crash into the wall at Turn 6 by going straight on rather than turning, bringing out the red flags.
After the crash, Mercedes said Russell had emerged from the accident unscathed with the wreckage being brought back to the pits with a tow truck.
A post from the team on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “We have the car back and have already begun investigations into what caused the accident.

“Most importantly, George is completely OK.”
Reports indicated the damage on the car was mainly on the front right.
The test event is an opportunity for tyre supplier Pirelli to test their new compounds and a chance for rookie drivers to be handed valuable minutes.
F2 runner-up Frederik Vesti, who had replaced Lewis Hamilton in Free Practice 1 last Friday before the race, participated in the other Mercedes.

Max Verstappen ‘breaks unwritten F1 rule’ as Lewis Hamilton and other stars head out for end of season dinner

MAX VERSTAPPEN has broken an “unwritten rule” by not showing up the Formula One drivers’ end of season dinner in Abu Dhabi. The new tradition is supposed to see all 20 drivers come together following the conclusion of the campaign to celebrate over dinner and drinks.

But this year’s meal had a number of notable absentees including world champion Verstappen.
Only 11 of this year’s drivers posed for a picture in the restaurant with the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, George Russell and Daniel Ricciardo all present.
While McLaren stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were with the group, but missed out on the snap around the table.
And despite seven drivers including Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso missing the dinner, it’s Verstappen’s no-show that will cause the biggest stir.

As the world champion he is on the unfortunate end of an unwritten rule that means he should be the one footing the bill.
Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg previously took to social media to let fans know about the secret ruling, saying: “The hidden agreement usually is that the world champion pays.”
Although that wasn’t the case at last year’s dinner when Verstappen got away with not paying once again.
Instead it was Hamilton that laid down his credit card despite the Dutchman being the champ in 2022.

And there were no missing drivers that year as they all gathered to say goodbye to the retiring Sebastian Vettel after his last season on the grid.
It was a rare occasion to see all 20 drivers in the same place as Pierre Gasly revealed on the Beyond The Grid podcast.
He said: “I’ll remember that moment forever. It was the first time in five years we all got together.
“That’s what made it so authentic, and that’s probably one of the very few times you’ve seen the real side of people and drivers.
“You’ve always got closer relationships with certain drivers, but it’s almost like on that dinner, from the moment we closed the door, we all took our cap off our heads, and we’re like, ‘Okay, now, it’s just you get whatever you see.'”

Shocking moment huge brawl breaks out at F1 party in Abu Dhabi as bottles of prosecco are launched at spectators

SHOCKING footage has emerged showing a mass brawl between boozed up guests at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.Celebrations from fans at the event got completely out of hand as a huge fight broke out at the £1billion Yas Marina Circuit as guests flung bottles at each other.

Max Verstappen secured his 19th win of the season as the Red Bull driver celebrated being crowned Formula One world champion again in style.
But security had to intervene as revellers brawled at an exclusive event that took place on a balcony overlooking the course that was covered in Red Bull-branded parasols.
The F1 fans in attendance, some of which are said to be British, began hitting each other with bottles and jumping over furniture to get at one another.
Further videos showed more chaotic scenes from what appears to be a race afterparty, and it remains unclear whether there were multiple small fights or if they were linked.

One person who claimed to have been at the event and witnessed the scenes shared footage on X and wrote: “Can’t take the British no where can ye.”
The clip starts with a woman yelling at a group of men that were trying to get past her, with security staff separating them.

Then another woman puts her arm around one man’s neck and tries to restrain him from getting involved.
But chaos soon broke out as a number of battles broke out as more people continued to join in.

One reveller in a red t-shirt could be seen scrambling over white couches to whack someone before they were pulled back, then a man in a white shirt retaliates by striking him.
Anger continued to boil over as several men began using bottles of wine and beer as weapons in the fight.
One throws what looks to be a prosecco bottle straight at another male while others are spotted with larger bottles in the melee.
Security try to hold them back as the red VIP cordons are sent flying to the floor as the staff quickly get outnumbered.
A DJ is then heard telling the gathering crowd “let’s go” before he suddenly realises that trouble has broken out.
He then urges security to go over to a table to deal with the aggressors while Kanye West’s hit ‘All of the Lights’ song is played in the background.
The rapper, 46, was actually among the VIP guests in attendance at the grand prix on Sunday.
A host of other big names, including both Naomi Campbell and Priyanka Chopra, were also spotted at the race.
Red Bull are yet to comment on the incident.

Ben Hunt: Mercedes already have work cut out for 2024 season after disastrous 2023 with Hamilton’s assessment damning

IT is just 95 days until the Bahrain Grand Prix, the opening race for the 2024 season, and boy do Mercedes have their work cut out. This season has been a total disaster from start to finish.
It’s been a season to forget for MercedesCredit: Rex
From the opening qualifying session in Bahrain, where boss Toto Wolff ordered their car design to be scrapped, to the final race in Abu Dhabi, where Lewis Hamilton delivered the bleak assessment that his only highlight from the season was the fact he “survived it”.
Each time the team appeared to make progress, they took two steps back the next weekend.
Hamilton and his teammate George Russell were despondent as Mercedes went without a single win for the first time in 12 years.
This is now a hugely important time for Wolff as he tries to steer his ship back on course to challenge for wins again.

In the past, it would have been easier to buy their way out of trouble, committing funds to the development of their car until finding something that worked.
F1’s cost cap means his spending is limited to that of his rivals — a figure of just $135million (£107m) for the whole season, a third of what the big teams would spend before it was introduced in 2021.
It was encouraging at least to see no back-slapping at finishing second in the championship, having narrowly pipped perennial under-achievers Ferrari by three points.
Somewhat worryingly, in his post-race media session in Abu Dhabi, Wolff said he could draw some optimism from McLaren, Aston Martin and Alpha Tauri, who had all made a strong finish to the season.

Only, this is not a customer team like those listed above, this is Mercedes, who won eight constructors’ titles in a row.
Wolff spoke with a frown which now appears etched across his brow and the general mood raises more fears for next season.
For the development of their challenger in 2024 is now well under way at their Brackley HQ.
But there seems to be nothing to brighten their spirits, no optimism, only the painful realisation of another season of woe ahead.
This campaign has only just finished but time is already running out to be able to challenge Red Bull next season.
I received a great deal of feedback from people working in the F1 paddock after last week’s column, where I revealed the human cost of six races in seven weeks, criss-crossing the world.
Staff sickness was a big issue in Abu Dhabi, with Red Bull boss Christian Horner saying: “I sincerely hope that subscriptions to Lemsip are not within the budget cap. It’s been a pretty brutal regime.”

    LEAVING HIS DIRTY MARQ
MARCO BEZZECCHI has blasted MotoGP rival Marc Marquez, calling him “the dirtiest rider”.
The two collided on the opening lap of the Valencia GP, which was won by Ducati’s 26-year-old Francesco Bagnaia, who retained his title.
Bezzecchi, 25, fumed: “Marquez decided to end my race on the third corner. He did the same as he did in Thailand with me in corners five and six.
“So, he hit me right here in my back. It was very, very dirty.
“I think from the view from the TV you can see very well, but it’s Marquez so they don’t do anything to him.
“Most of the time, when the other rider doesn’t crash it’s OK. But when you make the other rider crash, at least it’s a f***ing penalty.
“They never do anything to him — because it’s Marquez and he’s the dirtiest rider.”

A fifth-place finish at Yas Island was enough to beat Danish racer Frederik Vesti by 11 points in the overall standings.
