Lewis Hamilton feared tyres would EXPLODE again as he urges Mercedes to act after Max Verstappen wins at Silverstone

LEWIS HAMILTON wants his Mercedes team to investigate his tyre problems after fearing they would EXPLODE near the end of today’s 70th Anniversary race.
The Brit, who suffered a dangerous blow-out during the British GP just seven days ago, came home in second place behind race-winner, Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen produced a brilliant performance at Silverstone on SundayCredit: Reuters
While Verstappen was comfortable on the rubber, Hamilton feared another failure.
He said: “I’m really grateful to have managed to just get my way through the race.
“At the end I was just driving with half a tyre basically.
“If you look in the mirrors, one half was bald and the other side was okay, so it held together.

“But of course I was nervous it was going to explode.
“I’m sure the team will be working as hard as they can, because we’ve not had that before.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
“Pirelli were struggling with tyre failures last week, so they just put the pressures up and up and up and up.
“The tyres are balloons now, they’re the highest pressures we’ve ever had on a track like that.

“It’s something we’ll look into. Definitely unexpected to have the blistering as hardcore as we experienced.”
Meanwhile, pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas was a disappointing third and accused his Mercedes team of “sleeping” as they were leapfrogged by Verstappen.
He added: “Very frustrating starting from pole and finishing third is not ideal.
“As a team we were sleeping at some point when Max managed to get ahead of us.

Lewis Hamilton made a late charge to finish second ahead of Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes’ tyres wilted in the Silverstone heat.
Just like last week, the German outfit struggled to manage their rubber with both drivers suffering blisters early on.
And that was music to Verstappen’s ears as his Red Bull coped with the 43C track temperature better than his rivals.
Mercedes were forced to pit both pole starter Bottas and championship leader Hamilton very early while Verstappen stayed out on his fresher tyres.

And the Dutchman looked after his car so well that he had a pit stop in hand over his Mercedes rivals and came out ahead of the pair.
Hamilton pitted late on for the second time onto fresh rubber and charged past Charles Leclerc into third.
He then caught his team-mate Bottas with two laps to go to claim second place behind the imperious Verstappen.

Verstappen said: “I didn’t see this win coming but after the first stint it seemed we were really good on tyres.

“We had a lot of pace in the car and didn’t have a lot of tyre issues at all.
“It’s an incredible result to win here – we just had a great day, the right strategy and everything went smooth.”

Hamilton added: “It was unexpected to have hardcore blistering like that but I’m grateful to have progressed and managed my way through the race.
“I’m sure the team will look into it because we’ve not had something like this before.
“I don’t know if anyone else struggled with blisters like us so we’ll have to look into it.
“At the end I was driving with half a tyre basically – one half is bald. But we held it together.”

Formula E: Jean-Eric Vergne’s wait for a win continues after Max Gunther snatches victory in Berlin

TWO-TIME reigning Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne’s wait for a win this season continues after he lost the lead in the dying moments in Berlin.
BMW youngster Max Gunther waited behind Vergne throughout the race before pouncing late on to claim victory in Berlin.

    2

Two-time champ Jean-Eric Vergne’s last win came in June 2019 in Switzerland
Vergne’s frustration continued after seeing his team-mate Antonio Felix Da Costa dominate the first two races in Berlin and edge closer to winning the title.
Vergne, who dropped from first to third, said: “I’m quite happy to get a podium.
“I don’t know, I need to investigate what happened here.
“I am not sure what happened, I lost a lot of energy in attack mode and it seems as though my regen pedal was not working properly.

“I was fighting with Gunther for the lead but then when I saw Robin Frijns coming, I thought it was useless to fight him, I would have lost the podium.”

Chelsea transfer for Ben Chilwell edges closer as Leicester enquire about Olympiakos’ £12m left-back Kostas Tsimikas

CHELSEA have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell, according to reports.
The Blues have long been linked with a move for the 23-year-old England international but the Foxes have so far appeared unwilling to do business.

    1

Leicester have enquired about Olympiakos left-back Kostas Tsimikas as they search for a replacement for Ben Chilwell
However, Leicester may now have shown their hand in negotiations as they have enquired about Olympiakos full-back Kostas Tsimikas.
The Greek international impressed against Wolves in the Europa League on Thursday night and has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea and Everton in the past few weeks.
Tsimikas is valued at around £12million by his club and the Daily Mail say Premier League champions Liverpool are also interested.
The Reds had a £10million bid rejected for Norwich defender Jamal Lewis this week as they seek cover for first-choice left-back Andy Roberston.

With the Canaries looking for a fee closer to £20million, Tsimikas may present Liverpool with a cheaper option.
However the 24-year-old may see Leicester as a better option for first-team football.

The Foxes will also have 34-year-old Christian Fuchs to call upon next season should Chilwell depart the Kingpower.
Tsimikas registered seven assists in 46 appearances in all competitions in 2019-20.

Olympiakos have lined up Saint-Etienne full-back Miguel Trauco as Tsimikas’ replacement.
