      Formula E: Antonio Felix Da Costa comfortably wins second race in as many days in Berlin

      ANTONIO FELIX DA COSTA strengthened his grip on the Formula E title after winning two races in as many days in Berlin. 
      Da Costa became the second driver to win both races in a FE double header, as he made it three wins on the bounce.

      The Techeetah driver extended his lead in the title race to 68 points with four races remaining, with the season ending on August 13.
      Da Costa said: “It was so hard, [Sebastien] Buemi kept me honest the whole race.
      “Yesterday we were a bit quicker, but there was never a moment there where I had to keep looking in my wing mirrors and the engineers kept me under control.”
      Ex-F1 driver Buemi finished second ahead of fellow former FE champion Lucas Di Grassi – who secured his second podium of the season for Audi.

      Da Costa’s title rivals Mitch Evans and Alex Sims both failed to score points while Stoffel Vandoorne finished fifth.
      Da Costa’s team-mate and reigning two-time FE champion Jean-Eric Vergne has had a nightmare return since FE’s restart.
      Vergne failed to finish the opening race in Berlin before finishing tenth the following day.
      The all-electric series will have one day off before another double header at the historic Tempelhof Airport in Berlin this weekend.

      LEWIS HAMILTON could be set for a pay-cut following the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
      The F1 world champion has not started talks over the new deal because he feels uncomfortable speaking about it when people are losing their jobs.

      Hamilton’s current contract, believed to be worth around £40million a year, is due to expire in December.
      But the Brit’s moral compass has kicked in after last month Merc’s owners Daimler said they needed to cut more than the 15,000 jobs they had previously announced.
      He said: “Ultimately, it honestly doesn’t feel like the right time to sit down and talk about it.
      “When you think about so many people in the world who have lost their jobs, people unemployed, and to sit down and negotiate a big contract, it doesn’t feel like the most important thing that I need to apply time to at this second.

      “I do want to continue with the team and it is not a big effort for us to sit down and get it done.
      “It is just right now I don’t feel comfortable about it so I am going to wait a little bit longer.”

      At last week’s British Grand Prix, he said he had not even started talking to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about new terms.
      And Thursday, ahead of F1’s 70th Anniversary GP, the 35-year-old said he intends to commit to the team to help see through their increased diversity programme.

      He added: “I am not talking to anyone else and I am looking forward to continuing, particularly as we have just started a new chapter as a team in terms of how we educate ourselves, how we understand what we are going to do to help be more diverse and more inclusive.
      “I am super excited that what is possible with Mercedes-Benz and this team moving forward. It will get done at some stage so I am not stressed.”

      Hamilton now has a whopping 30 point lead in the drivers’ championship ahead of his team-mate, Bottas, who yesterday (THU) signed a new one-year deal.
      It is understood that Bottas’s £12million-a year deal with the Silver Arrows has simply been extended until the end of 2021.
      Meanwhile, Hamilton says that this season’s title race comes in “the most important year of his life” as he continues to fight to end racism and support the Black Lives Matter movement.
      He added: “It is the most important year of my life to date with everything that is going on.

      Perez set for shock return to racing and can compete in 70th Anniversary GP just week after positive coronavirus test

      SERGIO PEREZ is in line for a shock return to racing – just seven days since testing positive for COVID-19.
      The Racing Point driver failed a coronavirus test ahead of the British GP after admitting he flew home to Mexico to see his mum, who had suffered an accident.

      He was placed into quarantine on Wednesday night – just when Public Health England upped the self-isolation limit was increased from seven to 10 days.
      However, the 30-year-old has been told he only needs to serve seven days in quarantine and can return to compete in this weekend’s 70th Anniversary GP at Silverstone – providing his latest test is negative.
      A statement from the team said: “Public Health England have confirmed that Sergio Perez’s period of quarantine has been completed.
      “In line with the FIA Code Of Conduct, Sergio requires a verified negative test result for COVID-19 before he can enter the paddock. The testing process is taking place on Thursday.

      “The team expects to make a decision on who is driving alongside Lance Stroll later.”
      Perez’s return would be a blow to Nico Hulkenberg, who was called up as a late replacement.
      The German rushed to Silverstone and jumped in the Racing Point but was denied a chance to race after a broken bolt lodged in the engine prevented it from turning over.
      Hulkenberg said: “Obviously that would be somewhat disappointing, after having been back in the car and getting a taste of it and then this.

      “But it was always clear that I come in as a temporary replacement for Checo, not knowing if it’s one race, two races or what.

      He added: “I’ve been in contact with quite a few people from the F1 industry, and team principals, because obviously we all know each other.
      “Some is just casual chat, some is more about the future subject. So I’m definitely in discussions and in talks there, but nothing to say concrete yet there.

      F1 star Magnussen refused to kneel at British GP for first time to ‘separate’ himself from Black Lives Matter politics

      KEVIN MAGNUSSEN has explained why he did not take a knee ahead of the British Grand Prix last weekend – when he had done so in the previous three races.
      The Dane decided to stand with the other six drivers ahead of the race at Silverstone for the anti-racism message.

      The Haas F1 driver had previously explained his concerns that the gesture of kneeling is associated with the Black Lives Matter organisation.
      And ahead of the race this weekend, he says he now wants to separate himself from supporting a political organisation, but says he is committed to supporting the anti-racism messaging.
      He said: “I think in terms of standing or kneeling, I want to make sure that I’m with the messaging of ending racism.
      “I support that movement, and not any sort of political organisation that I think the Black Lives Matter movement is.

      “I kind of just want to separate myself from that, and then push on with ending racism and that messaging, which I think is great that Formula One is doing and that all of the drivers are supporting.”
      F1 has failed to gather total unity over taking a knee with several drivers not taking part in pre-race shows of support.

      However, each racer has vowed to help end racism and world championship leader Lewis Hamilton is hopeful of further progress being made.
      He said: “I’m not going to tell you my opinion on whether everyone needs to [take a knee] or not.

      “But if you look at all the other sports – look at basketball, look at football, Spanish teams, Italian teams, teams all over the world – no matter what nationality or mixture, they are all doing it united.
      “You’ve got players from Russia, players from Spain. So I think it is a work in progress.

      “So I do hope that bit by bit we can come more and more together and more united.

      Valtteri Bottas signs £12m one-year contract extension with Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton set for talks over new deal

      VALTTERI BOTTAS has signed a one-year extension to his Mercedes deal – with the team set to switch their attention to Lewis Hamilton.
      The Finn, who is currently second in the championship, will remain with the team until 2021.

      The 30-year-old’s deal is worth around £12million a year as Merc decided against breaking up their winning partnership.
      Bottas, 30, has eight wins and 48 podiums for the Silver Arrows and is incredibly low-maintenance in his relationship with Hamilton.
      He said: “I’m very happy to stay with Mercedes in 2021 and build on the success we’ve enjoyed together already.
      “The past few years have been all about continuous improvement, working on every aspect of my performance.

      “I’m confident that today I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, but I can always raise the bar. Mercedes embraces the same philosophy: They always want to get better and are always hungry for more.
      “Ever since I fell in love with F1 as a kid it’s been my dream to one day become world champion.
      “I’m in the fight for the title this year and staying with Mercedes puts me in the best possible position to compete for it next season as well.”

      Merc boss Toto Wolff is now expected to start talks with Hamilton as his deal expires at the end of this year.

      Wolff added: “We are very excited that Valtteri will stay with the team for at least one more season.
      “We’re seeing the strongest Valtteri we’ve ever seen this year — in terms of his on-track performance, but also physically and mentally.
      “He is second in the championship, finished the last season in P2 and plays a very important part in our overall team performance.

      FORMULA E chairman and co-founder Alejandro Agag will miss the final six races of the season in Berlin after testing positive for Covid-19. 
      Agag was forced to miss his first ever FE race after announcing he had contracted Covid-19 on social media.

      Agag’s announcement came just days after Mahindra team principal Dilbagh Gill revealed he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
      Agag said: “Congratulations [Da Costa] for a great win in Berlin race one. 
      “So sad to miss my first Formula E race ever, that I had to watch from my room in Berlin.
       “I tested positive for COVID on arrival and I am following all the excellent protocols we have in place to keep everyone safe.

       “Missing everyone in the Paddock!”

      FE have conducted 1,423 tests in Berlin ahead of their season showdown – with Agag and Gill being the only two confirmed positive tests so far.
      The all-electric series have cut down their personnel on site from roughly 5000 people down to just 1000 to fulfill legal requirements in Germany. 
      Each team is only allowed to have 21 members at the track, which includes the two drivers and team principal. All staff members will be tested at the track every five to seven days.

      FE have five more races to come with the season coming to a close on August 13.
