Lewis Hamilton expects to be hammered by F1 for wearing T-shirt with ‘Arrest cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ in future

LEWIS HAMILTON has no regrets about wearing a controversial T-shirt on the podium at the Tuscan GP – but expects to be punished next time he does it.
The F1 champion was dressed in a shirt saying ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ in response to the black American woman shot by Louisville police officers back in March.

The sports’ governing body, the FIA, did not investigate Hamilton’s actions but the Brit fears that the rules will be changed ahead of this weekend’s Russian GP to prevent him repeating the stunt.
However, he remains defiant and will continue his fight to promote diversity and put an end to racism.
Hamilton, who can equal Michael Schumacher’s all-time F1 wins record this weekend in Sochi, arrived in the paddock wearing an altogether different T-shirt yesterday – featuring a bikini-clad model.
He said: “I don’t regret a single moment of it. I have not spoken to the FIA. What was really positive was the support I got from the fans.

“I usually follow my heart and do what is right and I felt that was me following my heart.
“I did something that has never really happened in Formula One and obviously they will stop it from happening again moving forwards.

“People say sport is not a place for politics, but it is human rights issues, and in my mind that is something we should be pushing towards.

“We have a huge group of amazing people who watch our sport and are from different backgrounds and cultures.
“We should be pushing positive messages towards them, especially for equality.
“I don’t know what they are going to do this weekend. Lots of rules have been written for me over the years but that hasn’t stopped me.”
The 35-year-old says that his decision to wear the T-shirt in Mugello for the Tuscan GP served its purpose as it started people thinking about the issue.
And that he will continue to work with the FIA in their pre-race anti-racism message.

“But as a business and an organisation they have got certain limits and they feel they have to work within and try to make everyone happy which is not something I do.
“I try to do the right thing. This is a learning process for everyone because people have been happy with how life and society has operated.
“But the world, particularly the younger generation, is conscious that things are not equal and change is needed so it takes conversations with people and things like Mugello to spark a conversation that would never have taken place.
“I have heard tomorrow they will come out with a new ruling saying what you can and cannot do and I will just try to continue to work with them – agree or disagree.
“Do I believe they fully understand [the severity]? I don’t know but perhaps in the future we all will to the same extent.”

Fernando Alonso parks dream of winning motorsport’s Triple Crown to continue F1 career aged 39 with Renault

FERNANDO ALONSO has parked his dream of achieving motorsport’s Triple Crown to focus on resuming his Formula One career.
The two-time F1 champ will return to the sport next season after a hiatus spent racing in other categories.

    2

The Spaniard has been trying to win the Indy 500 to complete the hat-trick to add to his victories in the F1 Monaco GP and the Le Mans 24 Hour race.
A clutch failure put pay to this year’s attempt but the 39-year-old says his F1 career is now his main focus.
He said: “Next year I will only race in F1. I had this clear in my mind because 2018 and 2019 I was very, very active.
“This year it has been a little bit quiet for everyone because of the lockdown but in my case, I needed one year off and have a little bit of a normal life.

“In the next couple of years, it will only be F1. There will be more and more races, mainly in Europe, maybe in Vietnam, maybe in Saudi Arabia, so there are already enough demanding weekends to add another programme.
“Right now, I cannot say if I will come back to IndyCar after my F1 chapter or whether I will ever go back.
“At the moment, I don’t know what my state of mind will be like in a couple of years.
“I tried [to win the Indy 500]. It is a very magical race and if I do it again or not, we will have to confirm.”

    ‘RIGHT TIME’
Alonso says the break from F1 has done him the power of good since he left McLaren in 2018.
But he is now itching to get back to racing after spending time with his Renault team earlier this week.
He added: “In a way, the two years out of F1 was more of a fun thing to do for me. For a long time, I had the desire to race sports cars.
“Even when I joined McLaren in 2015, the Le Mans idea was there, initially with Porsche, so I always had the wish to do the 24Hour race, Daytona, Dakar…  I always had these thoughts in my mind.
“So I was thinking this was the right time. F1 would not change much in the next few years and it is a sport dominated by one team and when the rules are consistent we will not see any big change.
“So I said, let’s do the wishlist and make a decision for 2021 when the new rules were supposed to come in.  We left the door open if I would come back with the new rules.

But the more races you do, the more motivated I am because I can see the team’s clear progress.
    Fernando Alonso

“Unfortunately the new rules have been delayed a year due to the pandemic, so that was the only moment that I doubted if coming back to F1 or not, or I wait until 2022, but that was too long out of the sport.
“So when I signed a couple of months ago, OK, I was happy and super motivated and wanted to fight for that podium.
“But the more races you do, the more motivated I am because I can see the clear progress and I see the momentum and direction of the team building.
“I don’t know if a podium will be enough next year. When we start seeing the progress of the car over the winter and we start doing the simulator, their hopes are getting there.”

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
Alonso was speaking ahead of the launch of a five-part docuseries released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.
The show captures his hectic schedule of racing in different categories while it also digs into his private life.
He said: “The TV crew were following me for nearly 300 days and the thinking behind it was to show the motorsport world outside of Formula One.
“We all know about F1 and we follow every step in to the series but outside of Formula One there is a completely new world the fans can still enjoy.

Hamilton vs Schumacher: Wet weather, under pressure and consistency – who’s the GOAT with Brit set to match F1 wins?

LEWIS HAMILTON is one victory away from equalling Michael Schuamcher’s record of 91 Formula One wins.
The British star, 35, is also likely to match the German’s record seven world titles this season too.

Hamilton has already beaten Schumacher’s record for the most podiums and pole positions.
    So who is the greatest?
Sadly, the two only competed against each other for three seasons in F1 when Schumacher came out of retirement to drive for Mercedes, who were then uncompetitive.
SunSport breaks down the drivers’ skills into five categories to establish who is F1’s No1.

    WORK-RATE
    Hamilton
The Mercedes man gets a fair chunk of stick for his jet-setting ways and there is a feeling he doesn’t do his homework in the same way as other drivers do.
Wrong. He does and has his notebook that he carries with him that he uses to provide feedback to his engineers.

    OVER A SINGLE LAP
    Hamilton
In F1, there is a term that is frequently used that is along the lines of “being able to extract the most from the package”.
To everyone else, that means going as quick as you can… and the best measurement of that is in qualifying.
Hamilton is untouchable over one flying lap, his performances, especially for Mercedes, on a Saturday are mesmerising.
    Score: 10
    Schumacher
While Schumacher achieved an impressive 68 poles during his F1 career, Hamilton currently sits on 95, and having reached that number on 47 fewer races.
Make no mistake, Schumacher was quick, but Hamilton easily edges this one.
The argument of who had the better car also goes out of the window.

    DRIVING IN THE WET
    Hamilton
Whenever it rains, Hamilton is the favourite.
Since his impressive performance in the wet at Silverstone in 2008 to his bravery in qualifying for this year’s Styrian GP, he always seems to keep it on the black stuff, whatever the weather.
This year’s pole in Austria was particularly impressive, with his Merc boss Toto Wolff hailing the performance as “not from this world”.

Like Hamilton, the German has a reputation for being an excellent wet weather driver.
One race that stands out is the 1995 Belgian GP where he stayed on slicks while most of the other cars pitted for wets.
Despite being slower, Schumacher held off Damon Hill to win the race.

    CALM UNDER PRESSURE
    Hamilton
With team radio now regularly played out on TV, fans get an insight into life in the drivers’ cockpits.
For the best part, Hamilton’s comments on tyres are interesting for those studying the lap times.
But while he sometimes sounds flustered, it’s worth remembering he’s travelling at 200mph and pulling G-forces of 5G.

    CONSISTENCY
    Hamilton
Ah, the old argument about having the best car.
The best car of the season is always defined by who won the title that year.
The best drivers get to drive the best cars.

Lewis Hamilton’s Breonna Taylor and Black Lives Matter stance slammed as ‘too much’ by ex-F1 rival Vitaly Petrov

LEWIS HAMILTON’S support of Breonna Taylor and his stance on Black Lives Matter has been slammed as “too much” by a former Formula One rival.
Russian Vitaly Petrov hit out at the British star in an outspoken interview – before insisting racism doesn’t exist in his home country.

Earlier in September the reigning world champion unveiled a top supporting Taylor after winning the Tuscan Grand Prix.
The t-shirt read: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor,” while a photo of her and the words “say her name” was across the back.
Medic Breonna Taylor was shot dead by American police in her Kentucky apartment in March.
F1’s governing body, the FIA, will not punish Hamilton amid critics’ claims that it was a political message – which are banned from the sport.

But Petrov, who had three years in F1 from 2010 to 2012, reckons Hamilton’s move went too far.
He told Championat: “For me, this T-shirt, on top of calling for everyone to kneel, was too much.
“It is a personal matter for every adult. You have the right to speak out on social media or give interviews, but I think the US government is well aware of these problems already.
“But to call on that in Formula One itself… I think half of the spectators didn’t even know what the shirt was about until it was explained to them.

“And let’s say a driver admits to being gay – will they come out with a rainbow flag and urge everyone to become gay as well? I think the FIA will no longer allow such behaviours.”
Hamilton, 35, has led F1’s fight against racism this year and has received plenty of plaudits for his determination to see change in society.
He wears a Black Lives Matter T-shirt and takes a knee before each race and encourages his fellow drivers to join him – although he encountered resistance from a minority.
Despite some opposition, the Stevenage star insisted he “won’t give up” in his campaign for justice.

    Vitaly Petrov

Hamilton wrote online: “I want you to know that I won’t stop, I won’t let up, I won’t give up on using this platform to shed light on what I believe is right.
“This is a journey for all of us to come together and challenge the world on every level of injustice, not only racial.”
But TIME magazine named Hamilton in their top 100 most influential people list, hailing his work.
Petrov, though, added that Russians only kneel “before God and to propose to your future wife”.
Denying his nation’s troubles with racism, he added: “In Russia we have a different mentality, and we do not have the problems that Hamilton is talking about. There should be respect for everyone.”
