Lewis Hamilton slams ‘ignorant’ Sir Jackie Stewart and Andretti after being branded ‘militant’ over anti-racism campaign

LEWIS HAMILTON has labelled Sir Jackie Stewart and F1 legend Mario Andretti “ignorant” over a lack of support for his anti-racism campaign.
The British six-time world champion has been vocal in trying to get F1 to do more to promote diversity in the sport.

    3

Lewis Hamilton has remained vocal to promote diversity in F1
They launched the Race As One campaign, which has created some unity during the opening three races of the season.
But not all drivers have taken a knee before races and others have worn anti-racism T-shirt’s while others haven’t.
As the only black driver, Hamilton has vowed to speak to race chiefs to “do a better job” in spreading the message.
Hamilton’s calls have been questioned by Andretti, who labelled the Mercedes driver a “militant”.

American F1 and IndyCar hero Andretti, 80, said: “I have a lot of respect for Lewis, but why become a militant? He’s always been accepted and he’s earned everyone’s respect.
“I think the whole point of this is pretentious. I feel that way. And it’s creating a problem that doesn’t exist.”

Hamilton was quick to respond, claiming that Andretti needed to be educated.
He replied: “This is disappointing but unfortunately a reality that some of the older generation who still have a voice today cannot get out of their own way and acknowledge there is a problem.

“Again, this is plain ignorance but that will not stop me from continuing to push for change.
“It is never too late to learn and I hope that this man who I’ve always had respect for can take the time to educate himself.”
Three-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart also claimed there was “no resistance to change”.
The 81-year-old said: “I think Lewis has been a great example to lots of people.

“There is no resistance for change if someone is clever and good at what they do. They will be accepted in Formula 1.”
Hamilton bluntly responded: “Again, another one. Just disappointing.”

British Formula One fans told to stay away from Silverstone with police and road blocks in place around circuit

BRITISH Formula One fans have been told to stay away from Silverstone.
The Northamptonshire track will host the British GP a week on Sunday but strict coronavirus protocols mean it is behind closed doors.

    1

British Formula One fans have been told to stay away from Silverstone for the British GP a week on Sunday
The GP attracted a record 351,000 spectators over the four days last year, with over 140,000 fans attending on the race day.
However, circuit chiefs are working with police to prevent fans from sneaking a glimpse of Lewis Hamilton and Co – or even being close enough to hear the cars on track.
Roads blocks will be in place around the circuit while the fencing has been re-enforced, should anyone breach the perimeter.
The message from the organisers is clear: don’t waste your time travelling to the circuit.

Meanwhile, the sport will try to find a away to improve the anti-racism message at the start of the British GP.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
Sebastian Vettel has responded to Hamilton’s claims that enough is not being done.
The Ferrari driver, who has taken a knee with Hamilton in all three races this year, said: “What you see is what the situation is.
“Everything was a bit rushed, I think drivers were just about to arrive to do whatever driver decided to do individually, and then in the end it was starting.

“Going forwards it is probably true that we need to talk among ourselves a bit better so hopefully we can sort it out a bit better at the next one.”
Meanwhile, F1 say they are committed to their end racism campaign and foundation to increase diversity, despite Hamilton saying it had slipped “off the agenda”.

A spokesman said: “Ending racism and increasing diversity and inclusion in F1 is a clear priority and something everyone supports.
“We set out our plans for diversity and inclusion last November and have in recent weeks announced additional plans to create a task force to tackle these issues and a foundation with over $1m already donated to create apprenticeships and job opportunities for under represented groups.
“We want to make lasting change and are acting to do this.”

Lewis Hamilton blasts F1 drivers after Hungarian Grand Prix win as anti-racism message continues to fall flat

LEWIS HAMILTON has blasted F1 and the Grand Prix Drivers Association after the sport’s anti-racism message continues to fall flat.
In more chaotic scenes at the start of the Hungarian GP, some drivers took the knee, some didn’t.

Some had “end racism” T-shirts. Some were nowhere to be seen.
Those who did, were positioned by F1’s staff with their backs to a screen showing someone singing the Hungarian National Anthem – a disrespectful move in itself.
It looked ridiculous – for the third weekend running – as F1 again failed to put aside time in their pre-race schedule for the message.
And Hamilton singled-out GPDA director, Romain Grosjean, for criticism, naming the Haas driver.

The world champ, who won the race at a canter, said: “Well, he [Grosjean] doesn’t think it’s important to do it so…
“He’s one of them that thinks it was done once and that’s all we need to do.
“So I tried to speak to him about what the problem is and it’s not going away and we have to continue to fight for it.
“I think this time he didn’t mention anything in the drivers’ briefing and neither did Sebastian [Vettel], and Sebastian and I messaged each other and he stressed as did I, the importance that we continue to do it.”

    ‘DO MORE’
Hamilton continued: “Moving forward we need to speak to Formula One.
“They’ve got to do a better job, it was such a rush, us getting out of the car, running over, quickly doing the knee.
“They need to do more, I don’t know why they’ve only done it for the first race, they did the start, they’ve not done it since then.
“They’ve come out saying they’re going to be fighting for diversity and end racism but they’re not giving us the platform to continue that as it’s not rushed.
“I think they can give us more time, so I’ll probably send an email over the next couple of days, and try and co-ordinate with them.
“They do want to do it. I guess there’s not good enough communication.”

Hamilton later went on to say there is support for his message but it isn’t being taken seriously enough.
He continued: “There is definitely not enough support for it.
“From a drivers’ point of view, many seem to be of the opinion they have done it once and do not need to do it again.
“I don’t know their reason for that opinion.
“We are all members of the GPDA and that is run by three people and two for it and one who doesn’t think it is important to continue it.
“F1 did an OK job at the first race but it is not good enough when you see other sports. It is like it has gone off the agenda after that.
“It is lacking leadership. We are in a sport and there needs to be leadership from the top and currently there is none of that.
“I try not to lean on the drivers because I don’t want them to think it is because of me they are doing it.
“But I don’t think it has been taken seriously.
“People have not grown up with it and because of that, it does not affect them, but we are fighting for a change.
“I will get in touch with F1 this week and get in touch with [FIA President] Jean Todt, as no-one else is going to do it.
“My dream is that by the end of the year we all know and understand things better and we stand united and the whole of Formula One is on top of it.
“We have not made any progress. We have made gestures but we have not changed anything.
“It is about communication, so I will get back on a call with F1.
“I would love to know what Jean thinks and what [F1 CEO] Chase [Carey]  thinks.
“But there is no progress yet. You need a leader, where is Jean in that scenario? It should not be me to call them out.
“It should come from the top down. The higher powers that pulls the strings.”

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
Hamilton is understandably upset. F1 had made much of it’s Race As One campaign, but without universal support, the message is lost.
At the Austrian GP, the season opener, there was an attempt at unity as all drivers wore the black T-shirts.
But while Hamilton, who has used his social media to promote the Black Lives Matter movement so well, has continued to press home the point, the message does not appear to be supported by his fellow drivers on the grid.

He added: “With the other drivers, there’s not a lot I can do.
“I gave a lot of energy in Austria to try and convince a couple of the drivers, and it’s a battle.
“But I think what’s important is the ones that are doing it, the understanding, is fantastic; my dream is that one day the other drivers come around to it.
“If we get to the last race and we’re all kneeling down and showing that we are united I think that would be beautiful.”

Marquez will have surgery to repair a fractured right humerus in Barcelona next Tuesday.
The Spaniard had also slid off the track earlier in the race while leading the field but recovered to rejoin the field at 14th.
He fought all the way back to third before being forced to retire after the second crash.
Due to the 2020 season’s condensed schedule, it remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will return to defend his 2019 championship title.

Fabio Quartararo, 21, won the season-opening Spanish MotoGP having started on pole.
However, it was not all smooth sailing for the Frenchman as he was overtaken by Marquez early on.
He regained the lead after Marquez’s first crash and eased to victory – finishing more than four seconds ahead of Spain’s Maverick Vinales in second.
Britain’s Cal Crutchlow missed the race after crashing in the warm-up.

F1 Hungarian GP results: Hamilton cruises to easy win as he matches Schumacher’s record of eight wins at a single track

LEWIS HAMILTON cruised to victory at his favourite track to win his record EIGHTH Hungarian Grand Prix.
The British star, 35, started on pole – the 90th of his career – before breezing to a comfortable win.

Hamilton now sits level with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher in winning eight races at a single track, with the German doing so at France’s Magny-Cours.
He even finished off by earning a bonus point for fastest lap – by over a second, at that – in the 70th and final lap.
It was the British legend’s 86th career victory.
On crossing the finish line, an emotional Hamilton told his team: “Fantastic work this weekend, guys, so proud of you all.”

Max Verstappen somehow managed to finish second, despite qualifying seventh and crashing en route to the grid.
The Red Bull star’s suspension was damaged, but his team managed to get it fixed and ready for the start of the race.
Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, came in third after failing to sneak past Verstappen in the dying embers of the race.

Shambolic F1 anti-racism stand as Hamilton takes knee but some drivers late and Giovinazzi forgets ‘end racism’ t-shirt

FORMULA ONE’S attempts to show a united stand against racism continue to falter after a shambolic display prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The drivers were supposed to come together prior to the playing of the national anthem in a stand against racism.

But while Lewis Hamilton and some other drivers took a knee, others still hadn’t shown up.
Drivers quickly ran to their pre-planned position during the display.
Things got even more embarrassing when Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi forgot to wear his ‘END RACISM’ t-shirt.
It saw a member of the support staff quickly throw it to him so he could put it on.

To add to the mess, Mercedes driver Valterri Bottas forgot to wear his face covering during the whole debacle, despite it being a strict rule within the paddock.
Fans watching the mess unfold were stunned at the lack of organisation.
And they quickly took to Twitter to point out the farcical scenes.
One said: “It looks like a right shambles at the moment.”

Another added that the whole thing “just looks ridiculous.”

If the drivers are going to bother to go the point of wearing T-shirt’s/kneeling etc re racism then they need to get organised, it looks a right shambles at the moment. Turning up late, some not wearing T-shirt’s just looks a mess. #f1 #HungarianGP

Hamilton – who wore a Black Lives Matter t-shirt – has been highly vocal on wanting to highlight the problems of racism within F1 and wider society.
After his victory in the Styrian Grand Prix, he raised his fist aloft on the podium in a Black Power salute.

The British world champion has spent much time speaking with his fellow drivers, determined that they show a united front.
Prior to the race he tweeted about the need of “working together” to combat racism.
Some drivers opted not to take a knee at the first race of the season in Austria, with varying reasons for their decision not to.
That mixture of drivers taking a knee or standing continued before today’s race.
