Lewis Hamilton ready to commit to new Mercedes deal to stay in F1 for three more years

LEWIS HAMILTON is ready for at least another three years in F1 after being fired up during lockdown.
The 35-year-old, who is currently on around £40million a year, is in talks with Mercedes over a new deal.

Hamilton’s current contract expires at the end of this season — his 14th in F1.
But ahead of this weekend’s  British GP at Silverstone, he insists he has not lost his appetite for racing.
The Brit, who can equal Michael Schumacher’s record seven world titles this season and is five wins off matching the German’s all-time record of 91  victories, is also leading the call for increasing diversity within the sport.
Hamilton said: “I would say  the Covid-19 lockdown, when we had the first part of the season cancelled, in some ways  gave a lot of life, a lot of energy to focus on some other things.

“That  time off was really a bit of breathing space. It gave me a renewed bit of energy to perhaps go longer.

“There is a point at which physicality and the mental side tail off, and I don’t know when that’s going to be.
“But I don’t see that happening in the short term, in the next two or three years.
“Also, we’re in a period where there’s not another driver from my background coming up at the moment, and I’m conscious of that as well.

“So my goal is to continue to deliver for as long as I can. I do see myself going for at least another three years.”
Meanwhile, Sergio Perez will discover today if he can compete this weekend after undergoing a second Covid-19 test.
The Mexican, 30, who drives for the Silverstone-based Racing Point team, took a pre-event test but the results were inconclusive.

He was immediately sent away from the circuit and put into isolation pending the results of a second test.
The team have also isolated the small number of team members he came into contact with as part of F1’s plans to  prevent the virus spreading.

Perez, 30, took a pre-event test that was inconclusive but a second test on Thursday has confirmed the diagnosis.
The British GP will still go ahead as planned and the team are now weighing up who will replace him.
A statement from Racing Point said: “Following the announcement that Sergio has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Silverstone Circuit ahead of the Formula 1 Pirelli British Grand Prix, the team regrets to announce that he will be unable to participate in this weekend’s race.
“Sergio is physically well and in good spirits, but he will continue to self-isolate under the guidelines of the relevant public health authorities, with safety the ultimate priority for the team and the sport.

“The entire team wishes Sergio well and looks forward to welcoming him back into the cockpit soon.
“Our intention is to race two cars on Sunday. We will communicate the next steps for our British Grand Prix weekend in due course.”
Perez is the first driver to test positive since the sport returned on July 5 with a double-header in Austria and one race in Hungary.

Two-support staff tested positive in Budapest and were immediately isolated but Perez is the first from F1’s so-called “profile 1” category with access inside the paddock – with around 20,000 tests completed since the start of the season.

A joint statement from F1 and the FIA added: “Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.
“With assistance of the local organiser of the British Grand Prix, local health authorities and the FIA COVID-19 delegate, a full track and trace initiative has been undertaken and all close contacts have been quarantined.
“The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula 1 have provided for swift containment of an incident that will have no wider impact on this weekend’s event.”
Racing Point will now weigh up who to replace Perez with.
They can call on Mercedes’ reserve drivers, Stoffel Vandoorne or Esteban Gutierrez.

Vandoorne has not raced in Formula 1 since leaving McLaren at the end of 2018 while Gutierrez’ last start came with Haas in 2016.
Another option, which could also be the preferred choice, is to recall former F1 Nico Hulkenberg, who used to drive for the team under its previous guise, Force India.

Lewis Hamilton holds 45-minute clear-the-air phone call with Romain Grosjean after row over F1’s anti-racism message

ROMAIN GROSJEAN has apologised to Lewis Hamilton for not getting fully behind F1’s anti-racism message.
Hamilton singled out the Haas driver, who is also a director of the Grands Prix Drivers Association, claiming after the Hungarian GP that “he was one of them that thinks it was done once that that’s all we need to do”.

    2

Grosjean had a 45-minute telephone call with the world champion to clear the air, in which he apologised and also said he was only representing those drivers in the GPDA who had concerns about the anti-racism message.
He said: “It was a really good chat about many things, Formula One in general, but obviously the subject was ‘end racism’.
“I explained to Lewis that maybe I did it wrong, maybe I did it right. I don’t know. It felt right at the time that we [him and Sebastian Vettel] are two directors in the GPDA.
“Seven or eight drivers were not happy to carry on the ceremony, as it was done, in race one in Austria.

    “I said to Lewis that I felt that as one of the directors, okay, Sebastian was pushing in the direction of carrying on with ‘end racism’, which is the right approach.}
“I was speaking for the drivers that were not happy to carry on, to express their voice as a director of the GPDA.
“Now thinking about it, it was probably the wrong thing to do, and Lewis put some good arguments, I did, too. But I think it was the wrong thing to do.
    GROS-LY MISTAKEN
“It was a good chat with Lewis. I said sorry, that maybe I did it the wrong way but I felt I had to do what I had to do at the time because at the GPDA we work on a majority vote system.

“I felt that as one of the directors listening to the guys not happy to carry on, then I wasn’t doing my duty.”
Grosjean also says he was subjected to abuse on social media after Hamilton – who last month labelled Bernie Ecclestone as “ignorant and uneducated” – named him.
The Frenchman said: “I wasn’t very happy that on my social media I had a lot of things about racism, that I’m racist or whatever, which is absolutely wrong.
“I don’t think you will find anyone in the world [who would say] that I did something wrong in that aspect.
‘So I wasn’t very happy about being treated like that. I was one of the first to push through and support that we take a knee.
“I’m still really hopeful that one day we will get 20 drivers to take the knee on the grid, that it will happen at one point.”

And the winner was Eva Muttram, who drew her design by hand – including two love hearts.
Norris said: “It reminds me a lot of when I was younger, designing helmets, drawing away, just when I was like five, six, seven years old, printing off hundreds of helmet designs, colouring them in and doing whatever.
“It’s very different to what I’m used to. All this glitz and glamour and sparkly bits and swooshes and cool stuff, I just went with something that reminded me of me when I was young.

“I love it. It’s a lot of white, but at the same time, I just think it’s really cute.
“I like the colours, and it’s very original. Thank you very much Eva.”

Lewis Hamilton is ‘machine’ as ‘incredible’ Mercedes driver hunts down Michael Schumacher’s records, says F1 chief Brawn

LEWIS HAMILTON has been labelled “a machine” as he hunts down Michael Schumacher’s records and breaks them.
The praise comes from Formula One’s Managing Director, Ross Brawn, who runs the sport on a day-to-day basis for owners, Liberty Media.

    3

Lewis Hamilton has been hailed as “incredible” by F1 chief Ross Brawn

    3

The former Ferrari boss admitted he thought that Michael Schumacher’s records would never be beaten
Brawn has a bittersweet feeling about seeing Hamilton eclipse the German’s achievements.
He was the technical director at Benetton when Schumacher won his first two titles and followed him to Ferrari where he won five more.
But Brawn has also played a key part in Hamilton’s success, convincing him to join Mercedes in 2013 when he was the team’s boss.
Hamilton has since flourished and is set to equal Schuamcher’s total of seven world titles this season.

Schumacher’s record of 91 wins is also set to be bettered by Hamilton, who is currently on 86 and goes into this weekend’s British GP as the clear favourite.
When quizzed by SunSport as to which driver is the best, Brawn’s long-term relationship and loyalty to Schumacher prevents him from picking sides.
He said: “I have a very long and personal relationship with Michael, so it would be difficult to pick who is the best.
“But I never imagined for any moment that anyone would come close to Michael’s record.

His driving is incredible and, what’s fascinating is his lifestyle is contrary to what you’d expect from a top sportsman.
    Ross Brawn

“Having been part of Michael’s achievements and witnessed it, it is absolutely incredible that Lewis is close to breaking that record and I am sure he will.
“He is in the right team, he is at the peak of his ability. His driving is incredible and, what’s fascinating is his lifestyle is contrary to what you’d expect from a top sportsman.
“What I see in Lewis, compared to Michael is that they are both incredibly professional and committed but Lewis doesn’t make mistakes.
“He might have a spin in practice, but it is so rare for him to make a mistake in a race.
“He is relentless. He is one in a generation. I am convinced he will break the record and go on to set the bar even higher.
“Lewis is a machine and has done it his own way. He has broken the mould. A great competitor and sportsman.”
Brawn said he had no hesitations about approaching Hamilton to drive for Mercedes midway through the 2012 season.
Hamilton was then at McLaren and was sold Brawn’s dream and, with retirements in Belgium and especially Singapore, he was convinced to jump ship.

    3

Ross Brawn has played a big part in both Schumacher and Hamilton’s careers
The hurdle proved to be the contract, which the late Niki Lauda helped get past the paymasters at Daimler.
Brawn added: “The biggest challenge was finding a commercial agreement and that is where Niki came in.
“We had convinced Lewis it was the right move for him to make. He had only known McLaren and he wanted to try something different.
“We had to sort out the commercial terms, which you can imagine for someone like Lewis, were pretty strong, so Niki helped to get that over the line.”
Hamilton has been outspoken on many issues in the past and his current focus is on end racism and support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Following the Hungarian GP, the 35-year-old called out F1 and the sport’s governing body, saying he felt their End Racism campaign had slipped off the agenda.
Brawn says it definitely hasn’t and they will ensure that message is hammered home at Silverstone this weekend.
He said: “Hungary was not impressive and it was compounded by the weather conditions with the drivers coming to the grid as late as possible.
“We also moved from something F1 had structured at the first race to something the drivers wished to take responsibility for, and that didn’t work terribly well.
“We had a very good meeting with them and the FIA and at Silverstone you will see a structured, respectful message.

    Fastest laps: 48

“The other topic is some drivers take the knee and others don’t but I think we should allow people to express their message in how they feel is appropriate.”
F1’s commitment to ending racism and improving diversity was not helped by Bernie Ecclestone’s bombastic comments.
Brawn gives little time to the former F1 supremo, who is no longer involved in the sport.
He added: “Bernie was a key part of Formula One for many years. I was talking to Lewis the other day about this. My father is in no way racist but his terminology towards this topic is very different to me.
“Each generation is changing for the better and we have to look at future generations for solutions, not the older generations.”
Brawn and his team deserve plenty of credit for getting the season started as F1 became the first international sporting event to return after the coronavirus pandemic.
Preparations are all in place for Silverstone for this week and next in a rare double-header.
And Brawn remains confident the measures in place will also allow the Spanish GP to go as planned.

Lewis Hamilton picks his dog as ideal passenger, reveals love of Smart cars and his hopes for a diverse future in F1

LEWIS HAMILTON has revealed that he has gone electric with a newfound love of Smart cars.
The Formula One world champion has taken up an increasingly green mantra in recent years despite previously thinking he would always remain a petrolhead.

The Mercedes star criticised F1 for its Hungarian GP anti-racism display and wants a more diverse sport in the futureCredit: AP:Associated Press
In discussion with his championship-winning team Mercedes, the Brit opened up on why he changed his mind.
And Hamilton also named his ideal passenger in the Q&A and spoke on his hopes for more diversity in F1.
If you weren’t a Formula One driver, what would you be instead?
    It’s a difficult one. Probably… in a band.

    What instrument?
    Guitar.
Many people talk about sustainability these days. What does it mean to you?
Sustainability is the future. And it’s the only way that we’re going to be able to save this planet. So it is something that people need to get their minds around, that people need to embrace – companies particularly – but also each of us individually, in our household and in our daily lives.

What gives you hope about the world today?
People. Ultimately, everyone has their own opinion and there are those that are less willing to change. And then I see a lot more positivity out there of people willing to change their mindsets.
    Electric cars or petrol cars?
That’s a good question. I was growing up in the petrol era. I’d been one of those people who were kind of thinking ‘I’m never going to drive an electric car’.

And now I have the EQC and I have an electric Smart car, which I love and I only drive those cars now. All of us have to make adjustments in our mind. I’ve just been more open minded and now I love it so much, that I’m changing all my cars to electric. And the great thing is it has a positive impact on the environment.
You’re going on a five-hour drive. Who do you want in the passenger seat?
    Roscoe.
That’s your dog, right? Sounds relaxed. Speaking of that: How can you best relax?
I think I’m most relaxed when I’ve got my feet up, got Roscoe next to me. Watching TV, watching a movie with some sort of sweets. [Laughs.] Actually probably even more so is being around family. Not even having to talk, but just being around family. That for me is super relaxing.
    You like social media because….
It’s the bridge between my fans and I.
What was your first thought when you saw the new all-black livery for the Silver Arrows?
I’m just so proud of my team for being open-minded, for shifting. Ultimately, we all have to get out of the way of ourselves in order to allow change.
How do you picture Formula One ten years from now?
It will hopefully be much more inclusive, a much more diverse sight for people when they’re watching. When young kids can watch, no matter what their background is and say ‘I can get there, because there is someone that looks like me there.
It seems to be very, very open and obviously the sport is supportive of inclusion and diversity’. So I am hoping to see a lot more women involved, I am hoping to see more people of color.

    And what frightens you?
Spiders. Tarantulas. The thought of a tarantula. I couldn’t get near one of them. No.
What does “winning” mean to you?

Silverstone chiefs vow to stage ‘record-breaking’ British GP next year as 350,000 fans miss out due to coronavirus

SILVERSTONE chiefs are planning a “record-breaking” bumper British Grand Prix for 2021 to make up for this year’s behind-closed-doors race.
Last year, over 350,000 fans attended over the four days whereas this year the grandstands will be empty as part of the coronavirus measures.

Circuit bosses have warned fans not to waste their time trying to get close to the track to sneak a glimpse of Lewis Hamilton or even hear his Mercedes on track.
However, next year, Silverstone MD Stuart Pringle wants to recapture the atmosphere from 1992 – when Nigel Mansell won the world title – a period dubbed “Mansell Mania” when British F1 fans flocked to the circuit.
He said: “I am certain we will all feel the lack of fans but we want to focus on next year.
“We don’t know what the world will be like but I sincerely hope we are operating as normal by July next year.

“Providing it is safe to do so, I think we need to have a look and see if we can break some records next year because there is unquestionably a pent-up demand.
“I have my sights on topping Mansell Mania. That’s what I want to go for – ’92 particularly because that was absolutely massive.

“What’s interesting now is that it is all coming in to focus, even for the less casual viewer.
“Lewis Hamilton is now recognised as one of the greatest ever and then you have Lando Norris, who is fourth in the championship for McLaren.

“Then, if you are a fan of the sport, you will be aware of what a great job George Russell is doing.
“We are about to enter a golden period for British Formula One interest.
“We have arguably the greatest ever and then the other two British lads, who are the heirs to his throne.”
Pringle says that the Northamptonshire circuit is now fully prepared for this weekend’s race – followed by a GP to mark the sport’s 70th anniversary next week in a unique doubled-header.
He added: “I am happy. I don’t have any concerns.
“I think we are lucky we are the fourth and fifth races of the year and we are benefiting greatly from F1 and the FIA’s experiences from the first three rounds. All the testing procedures are up and running.”

McLaren ace Norris says the British GP without fans will not feel “as special” as his F1 debut last year.
He said: “It is going to feel weird going to the home GP and not having any of the fans there.
“It would have been nice to see even more flags with my name on. When you don’t have the fans it doesn’t mean as much, it’s not as cool, it’s not as special.
“But at least we’re racing, back on track, and heading in the right direction. Hopefully, next year we can get the fans back and they can enjoy the racing again.”
