Mercedes blow as ANOTHER member of Formula One team tests positive for coronavirus ahead of Eifel GP

The latest confirmed result from Lewis Hamilton’s team comes ahead of this weekend’s Eifel GP.

The world champions retested all of their on-site staff on Thursday after one individual was confirmed to have contracted the disease.
Another individual is being retested after an inconclusive result.
In all, seven staff have now been pulled from this weekend’s race at the Nurburgring. Mercedes have flown out replacements from the UK.
A Mercedes statement read: “Following yesterday’s positive test, the entire team was retested yesterday in Germany.

“All team members were negative apart from: one further positive, one inconclusive that is being retested.
“In line with protocols, four further team members, all of whom tested negative, will no longer be available to take part in the weekend. Six replacements have travelled from the UK and will fill the roles in the team.
“We have worked in close collaboration with the FIA and F1 throughout this process and will continue to do so.”
According to the BBC, none of the people involved is a ‘known person’.

Mick Schumacher F1 debut delayed as Eifel Grand Prix practice is axed due to shocking weather conditions

MICK SCHUMACHER will have to wait for his Formula One debut after the first practice for the Eifel GP was cancelled due to poor weather.
Rain and fog prevented the medical helicopter from flying – due to poor visibility – meaning the session was unable to get the green light.

Schumacher and British racer, Callum Ilott, were both due to get their first taste of F1 – plus crucial licence points – driving the Alfa Romeo and Haas cars respectively.
But FIA Race Director, Michael Masi, said he would not start the session because if there was an accident, then there was no rapid route to a nearby hospital.
He said: “It is pretty challenging with the fog that’s come in, the medical helicopter is not able to take off and fly to the hospital and the distance by road is far too far should something occur.
“With the region we’re in, it’s probably not dissimilar to Austria earlier in the year where we had a similar situation.

“Obviously from an FIA perspective, the safety of all participants, particularly the drivers going out, is paramount and that’s not something that we would compromise.”
Ferrari Driver Academy members Schumacher and Ilott had been due to drive in the morning and no decision has been made yet about rescheduling their runs in F1 practice.

Mercedes confirm member of Formula One team has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of Eifel Grand Prix

MERCEDES say a member of its Formula One team has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of this weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix.
But the Brackley-base team are trying not to let it disrupt Lewis Hamilton’s bid to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories.

    2

Mercedes have confirmed a case of coronavirus within the team ahead of this weekend’s race

SunSport understands that the team member is not well known to the public – and that would rule out key personnel such as Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, and team boss Toto Wolff.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a team member has tested positive.
“This has been handled and is being handled in line with FIA protocols, working closely with the FIA.
“We ask for your understanding that we won’t be offering additional details.”

F1’s rules include strict testing protocols during the pandemic with staff being tested every five days.
Anyone who does test positive is immediately placed into self isolation with those who have come into contact with them also isolated until tested.

However, F1 chiefs reckon that number will drop for the Eifel GP at the Nurburgring, given the tougher restrictions concerning social distancing and wearing masks.

F2 star Juan Manuel Correa reveals X-ray of broken legs for first time after horror crash that killed Anthoine Hubert

F2 driver Juan Manuel Correa has shared an X-ray of the broken legs he sustained in a fatal high-speed crash.
Tragic Anthoine Hubert lost his life when his car split in half at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in August last year.

Hubert, who was just 22, initially smashed into a barrier and rolled back into the track before Correa drove into the side of him.
Images showed Hubert’s vehicle practically split in half while Correa’s vehicle came to rest upside down.
Travelling at such high speed there was no chance Correa could have swerved out of the way.
Lewis Hamilton was one of the observers stunned at what he saw and left praying, ultimately in vain, that Hubert would survive.

There was no chance Correa was going to come away unscathed either.
And now he has revealed the full extent of his injuries just over a year on from that awful day.
Correa – who plans to drive again in December ahead of an incredible return to racing next year – was rushed to intensive care and remained there for two weeks.
The image he shared showed his right leg to be totally shattered, with his left in three pieces also.

Correa needed several surgeries on the leg and has mostly been using a wheelchair to get round.
It could have been worse however, with the 21-year-old American – who in April took his first steps since the smash – revealing he initially thought he was going to lose both legs.
He said: “I remember everything, I never lost consciousness. It all happened very fast, something went under my car because my front tyres went up in the air.

“From then on I was kind of a passenger and I didn’t realise I was going to hit the other car until the last moment when I saw just a pink thing in front of me.
“I was kind of in a state of shock. There was smoke coming out of the car, I had to pull myself out of the car.
“At that point I thought I had lost the legs because I couldn’t really move them.
“It seemed like they were connected by the suit pretty much, they were like gelatine.”

Sir Jackie Stewart claims ‘it’s hard to justify’ calling Lewis Hamilton F1’s greatest ever and blasts Mercedes dominance

FORMULA 1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart believes it is ‘difficult to justify’ saying Lewis Hamilton is the greatest ever driver.
The Brit is well on track to equal Michael Schumacher’s seven world championship titles this year.

He will also equal, and then highly-likely overtake, the German’s record of 91 race wins.
But Stewart, who won the driver’s championship three times, believes it is near-impossible to compare Hamilton’s achievements to speedsters of yesteryear.
The 81-year-old says that the modern-day racing calendar being busier, as well as Hamilton having a ‘so superior’ car and engine to other competitors makes comparison tricky.
Speaking on the In The Fast Lane podcast, Stewart said: “I don’t think that you can account [for] that sort of level of success.

“Just because today there are 20, 22 races, whereas in the old days when for example Juan Manuel Fangio, raced maybe sometimes six, eight or nine races a year in Formula 1.
‘To say that Lewis is the greatest driver of all time, would be difficult for me to justify, in the sheer power of what the other drivers were doing.
“Lewis drives extremely well, make no mistake, I’m not in any way diminishing his skills, but it isn’t the same.
“Lewis made a very good decision when he left McLaren at that time and went to Mercedes-Benz. And I take my hat off to him for making that decision.

“But frankly, the car and the engine are now so superior that it’s almost unfair on the rest of the field.”

Michael Schumacher’s wife says star wants her to keep his condition secret

Due to difficulties comparing the modern-day car and calendar with that of the past, Stewart doesn’t even have Hamilton in his top three racing drivers of all time.
He added: “Juan Manuel Fangio in my mind is the greatest driver that’s ever lived.
“With Jim Clark as the second-greatest, even ahead of [Ayrton] Senna.”
Fangio won five world titles in the 1950s. Scottish racer Clark won two world titles in 1963 and 1965.

At the time of his death, at the age of 32, Clark had won more F1 races and achieved more podiums than any other driver.
Senna won three world titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991 before tragically losing his life when crashing at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt disagrees with Sir Jackie however, putting Hamilton at No1.
Senna bags second spot with Schumacher, winner of seven world titles, in third.
Clark is fourth with Fangio in fifth.

Shamed Luca Corberi QUITS karting after throwing bumper at rival and claims he asked officials to strip him of licence

THE shamed kart racer who threw a bumper at a rival before starting a fight with him has said he will never race again.
Italian Luca Corberi, 23, labelled himself ‘disgraceful’ and said he volunteered to hand in his licence after drawing worldwide condemnation for his sickening meltdown.

Video captured Corberi waiting at the side of the Lonato track – built and owned by his family in Lombardy – during an FIA Karting World Championship race.
Corberi had been forced to retire nine laps into the 23-lap KZ Final after a collision with Paolo Ippolito.
But rather than leave the circuit, he waited for Ippolito to come past again at full speed before hurling his bumper at him.
Cameras later picked up Corberi – who used to race against current F1 star Lance Stroll – attacking Ippolito in the pit area.

Brit hero and former F1 world champ Jenson Button demanded Corberi be banned for life for his sickening violence.
Corberi has since broken his silence on Facebook and said he will never race again after what turned out to be ‘the worst day of my life’.
He wrote: “I’d like to apologise to the motorsport community for what I’ve done.
“There are no excuses to explain why I’ve done such a disgraceful act.

“This has been something I’ve never done in the 15 years of my career, and I really hope it won’t be seen by anybody else in the future.
“After the race, once I had been called by the sporting judges, I asked them to take my licence away because I was fully conscious about my irreparable mistakes.
“But as they showed me, they don’t have the power for doing it, it’s written in the international rules.
“So please don’t be against them, they were just doing their work in the best way they could.
“For this reason I’ve decided I won’t take part in any other motorsport competition for the rest of my life.
“That’s not a self-justice, it’s simply the right thing to do.

“This episode will be remembered as one of the worst in our sport and that’s something I’ll never forget.
“I’m not asking any indulgence, because I don’t deserve it. I will totally agree with the punishments required.
“I’m writing today to say sorry even if it’s not enough, because after all the bad things that happened during this event, the worst ever has been done by me, a guy who loves this sport and, even after the worst day of his life, will still remember his good racing memories.”
F1 legend Felipe Massa, president of CIK-FIA, karting’s governing body, posted a tweet with photos of Corberi’s meltdown.

He wrote alongside it: “This behaviour is unacceptable in our sport.
“Those individuals will face the consequences of their actions.”
The FIA also tweeted: “The FIA and ACI are deeply concerned by the disturbing events that occurred during the FIA Karting KZ World Championship in Lonato, Italy, involving drivers, team members and track officials.
“The FIA has launched an immediate investigation in to the incidents.”
Corberi’s rage came in his first return to the KZ Final for three years at the circuit operated by his parents. More
