      Laura Salvo dead at 21: Spanish rally car co-driver dies in horror crash at Rally Vidreiro

      SPANISH rally car co-driver Laura Salvo has died in a crash, aged 21.
      Salva was involved in a fatal accident in the first stage of the Rally Vidreiro in Portugal.

      The car was being driven by Miguel Socias when it allegedly careered off the road and hit another vehicle.
      Medics rushed to the scene within two minutes of the horrific incident.
      They attempted to resuscitate her and an emergency helicopter was on standby.
      But sadly, the talented co-driver is said to have died at the scene.

      Salva competed alongside Socias last season in the Suzuki Swift Cup.
      And she kicked off 2020 with an impressive win at the Rally del Bierzo.
      Her sister, Maria Salvo, is also a well-known and popular rally co-driver.
      Tributes have poured in on social media following the tragic news of Salva’s death.

      Peugeot Sport wrote: “Peugeot Sport wishes to express their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of co-driver Laura Salva, who died this morning following an accident at Rally Vidreio Centro in Portugal.”
      One heartbroken fan added: “The rally world have a new angel in heaven.”
      Another added: “A day of mourning for all rally lovers after the tragic death of co-driver Laura Salvo this weekend in Portugal.”

      Lewis Hamilton hopes to equal Michael Schumacher’s F1 record – to give him platform to fight against racism

      LEWIS HAMILTON has the chance to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories in F1 this weekend – not that he’s shouting about it.
      In fact, the six-time world champion – who can also win a Schumacher-equalling seventh title this season – seems more focused on his personal crusades against racism and climate change.

      Now 35, Hamilton is more mature than when he won his first title in 2008 and intent on using his social media platforms to educate his 26 million followers on Twitter and Instagram.
      He said: “I’ve never been a record person but of course when my name is mentioned in the same context as someone I grew up watching, then it’s like ‘woah’.
      “I have to step back for a second and realise what that actually means. 

      “I think that embarking on these records and achievements creates a platform on which to be able to speak about things that could potentially change peoples lives; for everyone’s children to grow up in a better world.

      “As I get older, and understand the world more – as well as the impact that us humans are having on the world.
      “I’m really getting into technology that is sustainable; changing things in my life so I can have a more positive impact.
      “Trying to think of the bigger picture – we are trying to continue to fight to end racism, and discrimination.
      “This is a constant battle that people have been fighting for hundreds of years. It’s a constant battle now.

      “Being a Formula One driver gives me a voice to amplify to push for positive changes in the world – even far away from racing.
      “Take the current work put into diversity in F1 – it’s something nobody has spoken up about before to this extent.
      “As I get older I realise that my purpose is to continue to do that. Racing and winning and breaking records continues to give me the chance to speak up about these things and push for real change.”
      Hamilton’s record, particularly in the turbo hybrid era, which started in 2014, a year after he joined Mercedes from McLaren, is hugely impressive.

      At the Silver Arrows, he has constantly delivered weekend after weekend and has amassed a total of 90 wins, 96 poles, 159 podiums in just 260 races.
      The accusation is that he is only winning because he is driving the best car, but the best drivers always drive the best cars.
      The reality is he is making it look easy, even if it isn’t.
      In an interview with Monster Energy, he added: “I think people underestimated the time it takes to get to a Grand Prix fully prepared and deliver every time.

      “Not to mention the physical and welfare effort for drivers to be in the right state to race.

      Jean-Eric Vergne cannot wait to race against Lewis Hamilton in Extreme E

      JEAN-ERIC VERGNE cannot wait to go toe to toe with Lewis Hamilton after driving the Extreme E car for the first time.
      Both Hamilton and Vergne are heading up their own teams in the all-electric off-road race series which gets underway in 2021.

      Hamilton recently announced his team called X44, which is the Brit’s first solo project in racing. 
      Meanwhile Vergne created a team called Veloce alongside Red Bull’s F1 mastermind Adrian Newey in September last year.
      Vergne says they have one of the strongest teams in the championship ahead of the first race in Senegal next year.
      Vergne told SunSport: “I think it’s amazing Hamilton is involved in Extreme E.

      “It brings massive value to the championship, it brings credibility too for the teams to be in Extreme E.
      “it’s going to be very exciting to compete against his team. 
      “We are a very strong looking team with Newey on board – you need to work hard to get the success you want and it starts with building a strong team in every aspect.”

      SUV STANDARD

      Here’s our lowdown to the championship, the vehicles and the venues as it revs up for next January.

      THE SERIESExtreme E is an off-road racing series that uses electric SUVs in remote parts of the world. There will not be fans at the tracks but will be televised and played through social media. Extreme E will engage with local charities to help conservation, preservation and environmental support.
      THE CARSAll teams will use the same car. The Spark ODYSSEY 21 Extreme E E-SUV powered by an electric motor and capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. The cars will be stored and transported to each venue on board a ship that has an multi-million pound eco-friendly refit.

      Vergne is yet to announce whether or not he will drive for his team and says it would take a lot of work for him to get used to this new style of driving. 
      He added: “It was really cool. It was something I have never experienced before, racing off-road.
      “I had no idea what to expect, I was very cautious with the Extreme E car.

      MICK SCHUMACHER will have to wait for his Formula One debut after first practice for the Eifel GP was cancelled due to poor weather.
      Rain and fog prevented the medical helicopter from flying – due to poor visibility – meaning the session was unable to get the green light.

      Schumacher, the son of seven-time F1 champ, Michael, and British racer, Callum Ilott, were both due to get their first taste of F1 – plus crucial licence points – driving the Alfa Romeo and Haas cars respectively.
      But FIA Race Director, Michael Masi, would not start the session because if there was an accident, then there was no rapid route to a nearby hospital.
      Schumacher said: “It has been a shame not to be able to get out, we knew the forecast did not look great, this time of year, we knew it might be wet but the preparation was good and we did the meetings and got so much knowledge from it. It has been very helpful.

      “We have to wait and see how things develop. We have a lot of tracks coming up that have not been driven on and the usual drivers need their time in the car.

      “Any opportunity would be great. F1 is the goal and the dream.
      “It is special to be here and would have loved to get out and drive in front of the fans – hopefully next time.
      “I have my mum here with me who is watching and she would have loved to see me drive, so maybe another time.”
      Ferrari Driver Academy members Schumacher and Ilott had been due to drive in the morning and no decision has been made yet about rescheduling their runs in F1 practice.

      Schumacher is currently leading the Formula 2 championship from Ilott and looks destined for a seat in F1 in 2021.
      And he says if he does reach his dream of F1 then it will be down to hard work rather than his famous surname.
      He added: “The pressure is always there no matter what your name is. My name won’t bring me the championship but it is the work behind the scenes.
      “We are doing a very good job and it proves we are in the right spot at the right time.”

      FORMULA ONE star Sebastian Vettel paid tribute to Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher with a new helmet for the Eifel Grand Prix.
      German Vettel’s classy act is in honour of compatriot and F1 and Ferrari hero Schumacher – whose health has been shrouded in secrecy since suffering a near-fatal brain injury in a tragic skiing accident in 2013.

      Outgoing Ferrari driver Vettel, 33, is commemorating 51-year-old Schumacher’s last win on German soil in 2006.

      At first glance Vettel’s helmet appears unchanged for the race weekend at the Nurburgring.
      But the four-time world champion explained his helmet would include Schumacher’s original design from 14 years ago as a 3-D print beneath his usual style.
      In a clip released by Ferrari, Vettel – who will drive for Aston Martin next year – said: “For this weekend’s German Grand Prix I will wear a new helmet.

      “It doesn’t look very different but actually it is because underneath we will have Michael’s original design from 2006.
      “You have Michael’s stars, the Chinese dragons and the signs on the side and obviously Michael’s MS logo.
      “It’s just a small thought, obviously we all miss him. That way, racing in Germany is always something special.
      “Thinking of him and his last race here – when he won in 2006, last time he won on German soil – so I would believe it’s a nice gesture and I’m looking forward to wearing the helmet this weekend.”

      But the 21-year-old was forced to wait for a taste of the action after bad weather saw the first practice CANCELLED on Friday.
