Michael Schumacher was seen as ‘despicable, horrible character’ but was just ‘misunderstood’ says ex-Ferrari chief

EX-FERRARI chief Ross Brawn has delivered an emotional antidote to F1 legend Michael Schumacher’s on-track reputation as “a despicable, horrible character”.
As Schumacher recovers from brain injuries suffered in a 2013 ski accident, the man who oversaw all seven of the German’s record-breaking seven world titles demolished some harsh myths around the 51-year-old.

Schuey’s win-at-all-cost attitude diminished the popularity of his reign from 1984 to 2004, including amongst fellow drivers, especially as he was accused of racing dangerously.
But Brawn, who was technical director during Schumacher’s stints at Ferrari and Benetton, claims the motorsport icon changed minds once people met him away from the wheel.
The 65-year-old Brit told Sky’s new docuseries Race to Perfection: “He was a pretty misunderstood character
“I don’t know if he quite enjoyed the impression he created because he was quite an intimidating character in many ways.

Lots of people who raced him had a different opinion but nobody I know who worked with Michael had a bad opinion – because of his integrity, commitment, human side.
    Ross Brawn

“But if you knew him personally he was quite the opposite, very engaging, very personal.
“So many times I introduced him to people who, before they met him, thought he was a despicable, horrible character and you introduce them, and once they got to know him they completely changed.
“I had that happen so many times because there was Michael the racing driver out on the track and there was Michael the human being away from the track.”
Schumacher was in hospital for around nine months, having been put in a medically-induced coma after his head fell on a rock as he skied off-piste in the French Alps.

Little has been revealed of his rehabilitation since he returned home in September 2014.
But Brawn emphasised that everyone who has known Schumacher well liked him as a person.
He said: “I don’t know of anyone who worked with Michael who had a bad word to say about him.
“Lots of people who raced against him had a different opinion but nobody I know who ever worked with Michael ever had a bad opinion about him because of his integrity, his commitment, his human side.
‘He was a very strong team member of any team he was part of and it’s a tragedy what’s happened but he’s a lovely human being.”

Brawn’s words are particularly timely as Schumacher’s son Mick took a demo run in his dad’s F2004 ahead of last Sunday’s Tuscan Grand Prix – Ferrari’s 1000th F1 race.
Schumacher Junior, 21, leads the F2 championship by eight points from Britain’s Callum Ilott and is tipped for F1 next year.
The word around the F2 track is that Mick needs just a top-three finish in the 2020 table to step up to motorsport’s elite level.

Lewis Hamilton insists he ‘won’t give up’ after backlash for wearing ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ T-shirt

LEWIS HAMILTON “won’t let up” on his fight for racial equality after his display at the Tuscan Grand Prix.
The reigning champ donned a T-shirt on race day that read: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.”

F1’s governing body, the FIA, will not punish Hamilton, 35, amid critics’ claims that it was a political message – which are banned from the sport.
But the six-time world champion says criticism won’t stop him fighting for justice however he sees fit.
Hamilton wrote online: “I want you to know that I won’t stop, I won’t let up, I won’t give up on using this platform to shed light on what I believe is right.
“This is a journey for all of us to come together and challenge the world on every level of injustice, not only racial.”

He added in a separate post: “It’s been 6 months since Breonna Taylor was murdered by policemen, in her own home.
“Still no justice has been served. We won’t stay silent.”

Sunday’s Tuscan GP, Hamilton’s sixth win of the 2020 season, coincided with the six-month anniversary of Taylor’s death.
Three police officers stormed her Kentucky apartment on a no-knock warrant as part of a narcotics investigation.

Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired his gun at the officers believing them to be intruders, before the officers retaliated by firing multiple rounds into the home – eight of which are believed to have hit Taylor.
On the night of her death, cops were looking for suspect Jamarcus Glover, who allegedly dated Breonna two years ago.
But the man was arrested in a separate raid ten miles away on the same night officers broke into her apartment.
A grand jury has been assembled to investigate the incident with two of the three officers retaining their jobs and another appealing his sacking.

Hamilton’s call for justice for Taylor, who was 26, is just the Mercedes superstar’s latest anti-racism display.
The Brit has helped encourage F1 to take racial issues more seriously and has taken a knee before races this season.
And while the FIA will not take action against Hamilton, they are said to be evaluating whether new guidelines are necessary to monitor future displays.
After the race, he stated: “It took me a long time to get that shirt and I’ve been wanting to wear that and bring awareness to the fact that there’s people that have been killed on the street and there’s someone that got killed in her own house.

The team stated: “We’re not bringing politics into F1, these are human rights issues that we are trying to highlight and raise awareness of. There’s a big difference.”

Lewis Hamilton will NOT be punished for ‘arrest cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ T-shirt with F1 ‘having head in sand’

LEWIS HAMILTON will NOT be punished for wearing a T-shirt that read: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.”
The FIA have confirmed they are looking into whether or not the Brit F1 champ broke rules by wearing the top at the Tuscan GP.

But SunSport understands Hamilton will not be punished by the sport’s governing body.
And it comes as legendary driver Damon Hill blasted F1 for having its “head in the sand” over the issue.
Hamilton, 35, wore the top demanding justice for the 26-year-old black American woman shot dead when officers stormed her Kentucky apartment on a drugs search in March.
Detective Brett Hankison has since been fired while two other officers involved in the raid have been put on leave.

An FIA spokesman said they were considering if Hamilton’s T-shirt broke rules.
The spokesman said the matter was “under active consideration” and they are looking into whether Hamilton’s top bore a political message.
Hamilton, who has spearheaded his sport’s drive for racial equality and justice, wore the shirt before winning the Tuscan GP.
He also wore it on the podium after recording his 90th victory – one short of Michael Schumacher’s record.

Former F1 world champ Hill appeared to commend Hamilton’s actions and said the sport had to “embrace” these messages.
Hill, 59, tweeted: “Such a mixed reaction to Lewis Hamilton’s T-shirt podium message.
“But F1 has always had its head in the sand over any issue that might make people think about anything other than F1.
“It has to make space for these messages if it is to be embraced by the wider world.”
Hamilton – who was slammed by F1 chief Michael Masi for claiming drivers’ lives were at risk in the Italian race – also took a knee before the race last weekend while several others chose to stand.
    Fight for justice
The Stevenage-born star ended his winner’s speech by saying: “Justice for Breonna Taylor.”
The sport’s governing body bans political messages and it has been reported elsewhere that Hamilton was said to have “crossed a line” with his latest message.
As a result, while he will escape punishment, it is understood that FIA chiefs will look at podium guidelines.
Hamilton has been a leading voice during the Black Lives Matter movement in recent months.
That included calling on broadcasters to help support F1’s anti-racism message.
He also attended a BLM movement in London as protests were sparked around the globe following the death of George Floyd.

F1 chief Michael Masi slams Lewis Hamilton after Mercedes ace claimed drivers’ lives were put at risk at Tuscan GP

FORMULA ONE race boss, Michael Masi, says he is personally offended by Lewis Hamilton’s criticism after the crash-hit Tuscan GP.
World champion Hamilton accused the FIA of putting F1 drivers’ lives at risk in the interests of spicing up the on-track action.

    2

Hamilton blasted the delay in telling drivers the race was resuming after the safety car period, resulting in his teammate Valtteri Bottas bunching up the field.
The result was a concertina effect that saw a huge smash involving four cars with Hamilton saying after “they’re obviously trying to make it more exciting but ultimately you’ve seen they’ve put people at risk”.
But Masi hit back saying he sees the Brit’s remarks as a personal attack because his priority is the drivers’ safety.
He said: “From an FIA perspective, safety is paramount, full stop. End of story.

“In my capacity as the race director and safety delegate, point blank, that’s where my role sits as the sporting integrity and safety.
“And anyone that says otherwise is actually quite offensive.”
One of the accusations was that the timing of when the lights of the safety car went out, meaning there was little time to prepare for a short dash into turn one at full speed.
But Masi points out that unlike the F1 stars, the drivers in the junior categories had no problem with their restarts.

He added: “They can criticise all they want. If we have a look at a distance perspective from where the lights were extinguished to the control line, [it’s] probably not dissimilar, if not longer, than at a number of other venues.
“At the end of the day, the safety car lights go out where they do, the safety car is in the pit lane.
“We have the 20 best drivers in the world but drivers in the junior category had a very, very similar restart to what was occurring in the F1 race and they navigated it quite well without incident.”

Ferrari chief Louis Camilleri admits team are ‘in a hole’ after latest disastrous race on home circuit

FERRARI chief Louis Camilleri says the Formula One team is stuck “in a hole” after their poor home GP.
After another embarrassing performance, this time at their own Mugello test track, the CEO of the Italian car company warned results might not improve until 2022.

Sebastian Vettel finished the race in tenth while Charles Leclerc was promoted from ninth to eighth place after Kimi Raikkonen was given a time penalty.
To make matters worse for Ferrari, it was all played out in front of chairman John Elkann and Camilleri.
And after poor results in Spa and Monza, Camilleri said there was no disguising the trouble the team are in.
He said: “We’re in a hole now, and we know we’re in a hole. It’s a confluence of factors, but anything I say will come across as excuses. And we’re not into excuses.

“So what matters is to focus on the issues we have and to work hard with determination to get back to what we consider to be our rightful place.”
New rules have been bumped back a year, so this year’s car designs will be frozen until the end 2021.
That means Ferrari will not be able to capitalise on many developments with their chassis or engine.
Camilleri added: “I mean realistically it’s going to be tough.

LEWIS HAMILTON wore a T-shirt demanding justice for Breonna Taylor before and after winning the Tuscan Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s top – which he wore when joined by some drivers taking a knee before the race and after while on the podium – read: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.”
According to Sky Sports, Hamilton will now be investigated by the FIA for wearing the shirt.
A tweet read: “The FIA are investigating Lewis Hamilton for wearing a T-shirt with a message about the shooting of Breonna Taylor both before and after his win at the Tuscan GP.”
The sport’s governing body bans political messages and it has been reported elsewhere that Hamilton was said to have “crossed a line” with his latest message.

But there have been no convictions while her family have continued calling for justice.
And Hamilton has echoed those comments with the powerful statement as he took to Instagram to show off the message before wearing the top in public.

Lewis Hamilton wins crazy Tuscan Grand Prix after three crashes see race stopped TWICE and just 12 cars finish

LEWIS HAMILTON kept a cool head while others lost theirs to win a frantic Tuscan Grand Prix.
The Brit overcame losing his lead into turn one, seeing two crashes in seven laps, two red flags and a safety car in the madness at Mugello.

Reigning world champion Hamilton held off team-mate Valtteri Bottas on a red hot afternoon in Florence to steal another march in the title race.
Bottas got the jump off Hamilton off the line using the tow into turn one to his advantage, but the Brit repaid the favour later.
Alex Albon finished third with Daniel Ricciardo fourth as only 12 cars completed the 59-lap race.
There was early chaos at Mugello with TWO crashes inside seven laps that saw a safety car and a red flag.

Max Verstappen had a problem on the grid that his mechanics thought they’d fixed.
But the Dutchman had no power off the line and was involved in the first shunt on the opening lap as his race came to a close.

Pierre Gasly also crashed out after his heroics to win at Monza last weekend.
And as the safety car came in and the cars restarted, there was a massive smash down the pack which resulted in the race being suspended.

Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen, Esteban Ocon, Nicholas Latifi and Antonio Giovinazzi all perished in a nasty collision on the pit straight in the seconds after the race resumed.
When the racing got going again off the grid, Hamilton used the slipstream to his advantage this time to leapfrog Bottas to take the lead.
Bottas tried all he could to catch team-mate Hamilton, including demanding different tyres and strategy to his teammate.
But the Brit pitted after Bottas and copied his team-mates selection to cover off any move.

There was more drama late on when Lance Stroll spun off in his Racing Point in a scary 180mph crash that forced another red flag.
And from the resulting restart, Hamilton streaked clear of Bottas and cruised to his sixth win of the season.
Ricciardo got a flying start off the grid to move into second, but dropped back down to fourth after being passed by Bottas and Albon.
Hamilton, who wore a shirt before the race to honour Breonna Taylor who was killed by police in Kentucky in March, extended his championship lead even further.

There was also a special moment at Mugello as Mick Schumacher drove his father’s 2004 world championship-winning Ferrari to mark the team’s 1000th race in F1.
Unfortunately for Ferrari their drivers Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel finished 8th and 10th respectively.
The motorsport roadshow moves to Russia in two weeks after passing the halfway point in a truncated 2020 season.
