Horror moment NASCAR crew member is thrown into air after being ploughed into in pit lane at Talladega Superspeedway

WATCH the shock moment a NASCAR crew member is wiped out by a truck during a race at the famed Talladega Superspeedway.
The mechanic is midway through a stop from his own team when a truck screeches out of the box behind, taking him out.

Clipped by the rear of the hulking vehicle, he does incredibly well to bounce back up and recover to complete his own team’s tyre change.
The NASCAR truck event at iconic Alabama circuit Talladega took place earlier this month.
Headcam footage from the crew member shows how the dramatic moment unfolded.
Local media name the mechanic as Kyle Warner, who was getting to work on No3 Jordan Anderson’s car in the pits.

After changing the rear left, he busts around the back of the car to secure the other tyre.
But Austin Hill’s imposing No16 truck comes hurtling out of its box just as he turns across the rear of his car.
The footage, via Caters Clips, shows Warner taking a horrible smack on the floor and lying dazed for a second or two.
However, he manages to hop back up and race around to complete a successful change of the right rear tyre.

Warner did lose time, naturally, but not in the way one might expect.
Showing no signs of hurt himself, he quickly realises his wheel gun has become disconnected and reaches over to pull the wire back in.
With hardly a few seconds lost, Warner completes the change for Anderson to race off to a sixth-placed finish, at which point fellow pit crew members are seen walking towards the beleaguered mechanic.
    His condition post-race is unknown.

Lewis Hamilton by far F1’s top earner on a staggering £42m a year, way ahead of rivals Vettel, Ricciardo and LeClerc

THE salaries for all 20 Formula One stars have been revealed, with Lewis Hamilton the top earner on a truly staggering £42million a year.
Mercedes star Hamilton – who tops the Sunday Times’ Rich List – earns well over TWICE as much as every other F1 driver except Sebastian Vettel.

The German, who picked Michael Schumacher over Hamilton in the GOAT debate, takes in £37m per year – with the lowest earners pocketing just £175,000.
It’s a massive jump down to third place though, with Daniel Ricciardo way back on £16m.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, still just 23, is the only other star to break the £10m per season barrier, on £14m.
And just seven other racers, including Carlos Sainz and Kimi Raikkonen, earn over £1m a year – with Vettel’s current Ferrari pal Charles LeClerc earning £8m.

The remaining nine racers all pocket between £175,000 and £900,000 per season.
Williams pair George Russell and Nicholas Latifi – along with Alfa Romeo racer Antonio Giovinazzi – are the joint-lowest earners.
McLaren youngster Lando Norris is not much higher either, on £200,000 per season.
Hamilton, 35, recently equalled Schumacher’s record of 91 F1 wins with his victory in the Eifel GP.

British legend Sir Jackie Stewart said it was ‘hard to justify’ calling Hamilton the greatest.
But the Stevenage-born superstar said: “I don’t think you should knock anybody for the way you do things. I get knocked by many people, particularly older drivers.

Sebastian Vettel picks Michael Schumacher over Lewis Hamilton in F1 GOAT debate despite Brit equalling German’s record

SEBASTIAN VETTEL has backed Michael Schumacher in Formula One’s debate over the greatest driver of all-time.
With Lewis Hamilton going level with the German legend, 51, and his record 91 race wins, the sport has been keen to discuss exactly who is better.

Childhood hero Michael Schumacher will forever be the best, in Vettel’s eyesCredit: EPA

For Vettel, Ferrari hero Schumacher ranks higher thanks to his ‘natural’ talent.
He told reporters: “I think he was better than anybody else I’ve ever seen so far. I think he had a natural talent that is very difficult to explain.
“I think if you saw him go karting, obviously I didn’t see him at a young age but I did at an older age, and I was happy to join him in the Race of Champions a couple of times.

    3

“So you see a little bit more of the skills and the car control. And both the karting experience and the Race of Champions experience, I think he had a natural ability that, as I said, I haven’t seen with anyone else so far.

“On top of that, he had an incredible work ethic, but I think it’s the combination of the two that for me stands out. I haven’t seen a match yet.”
Schumacher won seven world titles in a fantastic career split between Benetton and Ferrari, with a stint at Mercedes before Hamilton’s arrival.
Indeed, it was the six-time champion Brit who ended Vettel’s supremacy in F1.
Four consecutive world titles in a row put the German on course to match his compatriot, before the Mercs dominated the Hybrid V6 era that began in 2014.

Michael will always be my hero. And I think he had something about him that I haven’t seen in another driver so far.
    Sebastian Vettel

Vettel noted: “I think I can’t respect [Hamilton’s] efforts enough.
“It’s been the number in my head that I thought would never be beaten or equalled. I think we can be quite certain he will exceed this number.
“Nevertheless, I have to say that Michael will always be my hero. And I think Michael had something about him that I haven’t seen in another driver so far.”
Growing up in Germany and beginning his racing career at the height of Schumacher’s fame, 33-year-old Vettel admits he will always make the argument for his childhood idol.
And he believes youngsters of today are likely to be visceral supporters of Hamilton, even if a handful of F1 veterans are not.

F1 star Valtteri Bottas claims he is BETTER than Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton and says ‘I believe I am the best’

VALTTERI BOTTAS has reaffirmed his belief that he is BETTER than Lewis Hamilton – as he looks to claw back a massive championship deficit.
For the second time this season, the Finn failed to translate a pole position into a win as he retired from the Eifel Grand Prix.

    3

With Hamilton sweeping to victory, he boasts a 69-point lead in pursuit of his record-equaling seventh Formula One world title.
But Bottas still believes he can better the Brit, on his day.
He said after the race: “Of course I believe that, when I’m at my best I know I can be better than him.
“But obviously there are days that he’s better, no doubt, and overall in the last few years being his team-mate, overall he has been better.

“But I don’t do politics, I just love driving, I love racing, I like fair but hard racing and that’s what I do, that’s how I’ve always raced and that’s how I’ll go on.”
Bottas, 31, is set to finish behind his team-mate for the fourth-straight year of his time with Mercedes.

And he is yet to put up a stern fight to grab Hamilton’s title, bagging a personal best second place last year – but ending up 87 points off his colleague.
Sunday’s DNF came after an impressive race in Russia for Bottas, who explained his emotional response to that victory.

He noted: “As an athlete and a guy who really puts everything always out there, when you feel like you’re not getting to your goals and not getting the results that you’re aiming for a long enough period of time, it just builds up.
“People always judge you even though they don’t know you.
“They don’t know you personally and how you are actually, no one knows what goes on inside people’s heads and that’s why it’s a bit silly to judge people based on what they see from outside.”
F1 pundit Martin Brundle likened Hamilton’s latest triumph to that of Michael Schumacher.

    3

The Brit now sits alongside Michael Schumacher for race wins in F1Credit: AFP
The Brit levelled Schumacher’s 91 career race wins and his performance was described as ‘aggressive and precise’.
Brundle wrote in his Sky Sports column: “Michael was a pure winning machine in and out of the car.
“All the right people wanted to be in his team and be part of the success because he was so fast, so good. He largely dominated his team-mates in and out of the car, whether he was using his right foot or his streetwise mental capacity and guile.
“Lewis is the same. A classic comment of his on Sunday post-race was that he could see Bottas was graining his front tyres and so he pushed.

“Valtteri made the comment that this gave Lewis advance warning of less grip, but whatever the circumstances Hamilton seized a lead he would not remotely relinquish despite ensuing safety cars.
“He threw Bottas a consolation prize after the race by complimenting his determination to regain the lead in turn two of the opening lap, which was indeed a fine piece of aggressive and precision driving.”

The 39-year-old took a test drive around the track in Barcelona for a routine filming day, which is permitted within F1’s rules.
Alonso, who last drove a Renault F1 car in 2009, said: “It felt amazing to be able to drive these cars after two years and feel the speed again, how everything comes so fast, corner after corner. To feel it once again felt nice.
“It made it special to be back in Barcelona. I remember the year 2000, I drove the Benetton here with the Enstone guys.
“Now, in 2020, it’s with Renault, so it’s a special track and I have lots of good memories here. It’s a track I know very well, so it’s been a good day.”

Alonso left F1 behind after three underwhelming years with McLaren.

Lewis Hamilton slams F1 critics over GOAT row and reveals he has ‘never been so close’ with his dad

LEWIS HAMILTON has hit back at Formula One legends with ‘a bee in their bonnet’ over his claim to be the sport’s greatest of all-time.
Speaking just hours after equalling Michael Schumacher’s 91 race wins with victory in the Eifel Grand Prix, the enormity of the 35-year-old’s achievement was beginning to sink in.

The Brit insists he will cheer on the generations of racers after him, after his achievements were played down by Sir Jackie StewartCredit: Getty – Contributor

But with his position in the GOAT debate downplayed by the likes of Sir Jackie Stewart, Hamilton revealed he will instead be cheering the next generation of F1 stars, such as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, to go one better after he retires.
He also opened up on his relationship with his dad, Anthony, a bond that has been tested to breaking point during his F1 career.
Hamilton said: “On Saturday night, my dad sent me a text and said, ‘You know what to do tomorrow and I know you’re going to do it’.

“That’s how he has been since day one. Family is everything and I feel really really fortunate to have a dad who has been there since the start who has been supporting me.
“Dad and I have never been so close as we are now, which brings me so much happiness.
“We talk a lot, which I never ever thought me and my dad would do. We have conversations, grown-up conversations about all sorts, politics, food, training, relationships.
“I never thought I would be in that place with him. Just calling him after the race, were like, ‘Jeez, remember when we were having that bacon sarnie on the Sunday watching the race, or remember that time we won that championship and the guy who we were racing who had millions’.

“We just reminisce a lot because it was, it’s been an emotional roller-coaster.”
    STEW VS LEW
Despite all his success, Hamilton is a divisive character who splits opinions, none more so than in the old racing fraternity.
And while his statistics might have him nailed down as the sport’s greatest driver, it is a reputation he struggles to get accepted – not that he wants it.
He added: “There’s a lot of talk, in all sport, of the greatest past and present, but it’s impossible to compare people. It’s different times – we are evolving as human beings.
“If you put all the top drivers that have been the most successful in the sport and put them in the same cars, wouldn’t that be something?
“But all the talk of who is and who’s not, that’s not important to me, what’s important is the journey in this time and while I’ve been here.
“I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do, how I’ve navigated through, definitely made lots of mistakes, but that’s life, we all do that.

    3

“I think yes you can be definitely remembered for having the most and that will be something special to have, but as I said, it’s the journey.
“It’s what we’ve done along the way, it’s obstacles you’ve faced, and everyone’s got a different journey and a different way of doing things.
“I don’t think you should knock anybody for the way you do things. I get knocked by many people, particularly older drivers.
“They still have a bee in their bonnet, I don’t know why, maybe they’ll get over it one day.
“I have so much respect for the past legends, even though they do continue to talk negatively about me all the time.
“But I still hold them in high regard as I know it was so difficult at a different time in history, it was incredibly tough for them, they remain the legends.

The responsibility as an older driver is to shine the light as bright as possible and encourage those.
    Lewis Hamilton

“In 20 years’ time, whenever it is, when I’m looking back, I can promise you this, I will not be talking down any young driver that is coming through and succeeding.
“The responsibility as an older driver is to shine the light as bright as possible and encourage those.
“There’ll be someone else, whether it is Max or whoever it may be, who is going to be chasing the record that I eventually set.
“It would be the wrong kind of characteristic and approach to be hoping he doesn’t break it.”
Hamilton now says he will take time out this week to think about his 91 wins, his first coming in the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix.
But he says he will not lose sight of the fact that, despite having a 69-point lead in the championship, he is still waiting for his seventh world title.

Michael Schumacher’s son Mick hands Lewis Hamilton one of his dad’s old helmets as Brit equals legend’s GP win record

LEWIS HAMILTON was handed one of Michael Schumacher’s race helmets after equalling his 91-race win record.
The Brit was interrupted during his interview by Michael’s son, Mick, who presented him with the iconic piece of memorabilia in a touching moment.

It was only fitting that Hamilton would level Schumacher’s record, set in 2006, in the former Ferrari driver’s native Germany.
The Eifel GP track is where Schumacher won five times in his illustrious career.
Hamilton then stood on the podium and held the helmet aloft as he celebrated his seventh win in 11 races.
The 35-year-old said: “Thank you so much. It’s such an honour. I don’t know what to say.

“When you grow up watching someone and idolising them. What he was able to continuously do.
“I remember playing [as] Michael Schumacher on a game called GP2. Seeing his dominance for so long, I don’t think I imagined I would be near him in terms of records.
“So it’s an incredible honour. It’s going to take some time to get used to it.
“As I came in the pit lane that was only when I realised I had equalled the record.

“I hadn’t even computed it when I crossed the line. I couldn’t have done this without this incredible team pushing behind me. So a big thank you and huge respect to Michael.”
Hamilton started the race in second behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas and survived an early scare when the two cars touched on the first corner.
The Finn then made a major error on lap 13 when a right lock up sent him wide, allowing Hamilton to make the overtake.

Bottas’ day went from bad to worse when he lost power on lap 19 forcing him to pull out of the race.
That allowed Hamilton to create a lead of over ten seconds up front before the safety car was deployed with 12 laps to go when Lando Norris crashed.
But after moaning the safety car was travelling too slowly, he kept his cool to cruise to extend his lead at the top to 69 points.
