Canadian GP set to be KO’d for second year in a row over coronavirus rules in blow to Formula One chiefs

THE CANADIAN GP has been cancelled, according to reports from Montreal-based media organisation Radio-Canada.The race had been scheduled for June 13th but is thought to have been scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic for the second year in a row.
The Canadian GP is set to be axed for the second year running
F1 chiefs have yet to confirm the cancellation.
But these claims come after reports that the sport wanted to bypass the mandatory 14-day quarantine period on all arrivals.
With teams and drivers competing in Azerbaijan the previous week, staff and drivers would not be able to travel any earlier.
However, Radio-Canada say Montreal’s health officials were concerned that despite assurances, F1 personnel would be mixing with hundreds of volunteers who would be outside the bubble.
An F1 spokesman said: “We are continuing our discussions with the promoter in Canada and have no further comment.”
F1 chiefs allegedly said they would rely on private medical staff to keep Covid from spreading among the personnel.
They are also believed to have proposed a bubble, which included members of different teams staying in hotels, using private transportation and to be tested regularly.
But that would have put personnel in constant contact with hundreds of volunteers who would be outside the bubble.

And that is why Montreal public health are believed to have decided to cancel the event.
Last year’s edition of the race was also cancelled because of the pandemic.
Should the race be cancelled, the Turkish Grand Prix could make another return to the calendar to make up the 23 races this season.

But the 36-year-old – a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement- wants to continue breaking barriers in F1 even after he decides to call it a day.
Hamilton told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I could stay involved in F1 after retirement and I think I want to.
“But it’s hard for me to think about when I won’t be racing.
“Growing up, I’ve learned that changing things when you’re in them is easier and succeeds better.
“F1 gave me a platform to reach a lot of people, to inform, to send positive messages, to encourage people, to push.
“At some point, I too will have to stop, but the mission to make motorsport more inclusive will never leave my mind, it’s something I will always want to fight for.

“One or two years are certainly not enough.”
Although the prospect of retirement is on Hamilton’s mind, the Brit doesn’t plan to bring the curtain down on his distinguished career any time soon.
Speaking ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix last month, he said: “The position I’m in has nothing to do with whether we are or we’re not winning the Championship,
“I don’t quit when the going gets tough.
“I wanted a one-year deal and yes, I said to Toto [Wolff] it would be good that when we work on the future together we should talk about it much earlier than January.

“I’m fully committed to this sport. I love what I’m doing. We’re going to have a great battle one way or another and that’s what I’ve always loved.
“In the current position I’m in, I don’t feel like this is the end.
“Of course we’ve got these [regulation] changes that are happening next year which are exciting.
“I don’t feel like I’m at the end, but in the next eight months or so I’ll find out whether I’m ready to stop or not. I don’t think I will personally, but you never know.”
Hamilton will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.

In recent years, the GPDA have been pivotal in driving improvements following Jules Bianchi’s fatal accident at Suzuka in 2014.
And while Russell has only just started his third season in F1, he is ready to make his voice heard.
He said: “I wanted to take on that role because I think what the GPDA has done over so many years has been great for the sport.
“Whenever we’ve had our debriefings between all of the drivers we’d stay after and talk about certain issues or ways we could improve the sport.
“I was always quite vocal, I always quite enjoyed putting my opinion forward, and I guess having a voice for the drivers is something I’m quite proud of.
“I guess Sebastian is sort of representing the older half of the grid; I’m potentially representing the younger half of the grid.”

Daniel Ricciardo aims dig at Lewis Hamilton as he claims Brit ‘isn’t the only one who could win in that Merc’

And McLaren ace Ricciardo, 31, aimed something of a ‘diplomatic’ dig at the reigning champion and suggested a number of other drivers could also win races if handed the keys to the all-powerful Mercedes.
He told Square Mile: “To answer it diplomatically, I think Lewis isn’t the only one that could win races in that car.
“That’s obviously my opinion and I think that George Russell, in a way, showed the possibility of that by pretty much beating Valtteri [Bottas] in his first race.
“So you could argue that just maybe Lewis doesn’t have the strongest competition.”
The debate over F1’s GOAT will continue to rumble on as Hamilton pushes for his eighth crown.
While Ricciardo does think he could give him a run for his money in the same car, he admitted the mental pressure felt that comes with being the favourite at every race is on another level.

The Aussie noted: “I think, where we can’t be too aggressive or disrespectful to Lewis, is that, do a few of us believe we could beat him? Yes. I’m quite sure of that.
“But none of us have ever been in the hunt for a title. None of us have dealt with that pressure. None of us have had that year after year.
“Pretty much every weekend he rocks up to a race. Yes, he has the best car, but he’s also expected to win all the time. And if he doesn’t, it’s, ‘OK, what happened to Lewis?’.”

Max Verstappen is expected to provide serious competition for this year’s world championship.
Having pushed Hamilton all the way in Bahrain, they will duel again at Imola on the weekend and Ricciardo opened up on his relationship with his old Red Bull team-mate.
He said: “I think it’s easier now for me and Max to be friends for two reasons.

Me and Max never hated each other, we just wanted to end each other’s careers! It’s as simple as that.Daniel Ricciardo

“I think one is that obviously we’re not in direct competition – we’re not trying to basically end each other’s careers.
“The second point is that I think – I mean, of course, I won races with him as a team-mate and got pole position so I think he always knew I was quick and respected me.
“But now, since I’ve left, the other drivers have come through and him having different team-mates, I think it’s probably increased his respect for me even more.
