Lewis Hamilton fumes at Mercedes chiefs as double Monaco cock-up hands Max Verstappen championship top spot

LEWIS HAMILTON blasted his Mercedes team as they made a double-cock up in Monaco as Max Verstappen shot to the top of the championship. The Brit, 36, was a virtual spectator in seventh place as the brilliant Verstappen crossed the line to take his first win – and podium – in Monte Carlo.

In an added insult to the world champion, he had to see his pal Serena Williams hand over the winner’s trophy to Verstappen, as Red Bull also replaced Mercedes at the top of the constructors’ championship.
Hamilton was livid with his team after they called him in early on lap 30 for a pitstop; a gamble that backfired, as he failed to leapfrog and finished behind Pierre Gasly, Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez.
He fumed over the radio in a series of frantic messages, saying: “How am I still behind him [Gasly], man?
“‘What has just happened guys, we have lost two places. I don’t understand. I saved the tyres so I could go longer and you stopped me early.’”
He then added: “The pitstop cost me three places. I don’t really have a reaction to it.
“We do our talking in the background and will come out of it stronger.
“We have under-performed all weekend from the get-go and we must now put all our focus onto the next race.”
When asked how he could fare in Baku for the Azerbaijan GP, he said: “I would be guessing but it is another one we could easily struggle at.”

Mercedes’ strategic boffins were hailed for their last-second call in the Spanish GP to bring in Hamilton for tyres that allowed him to hunt down Verstappen and win.
But this time their pitstop call was ultimately the wrong decision and boss Toto Wolff wants to find out why.
He said: “The undercut looked like the only way of clearing Gasly.
“The outlap was good, the pitstop was OK, but it was not enough. You have to take it on the chin.”
Hamilton did set a new Monaco track record to earn a championship bonus point but he is now four points behind his rival.
But there was an even bigger problem for Hamilton’s team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, who was forced out of the race when a wheel nut got stuck on his car when he made his pitstop.
Mercedes say the ‘the wheel nut machined onto the axle and couldn’t be removed’, bringing an end to the Finn’s race when he was in second-place.
But that did not trouble Verstappen, who held his nerve to cross the line comfortably ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
Verstappen, who lives in Monaco, said: “It is so special to win here. It is a lot of laps and you have to keep your focus.
“You always want to win this GP and I remember when I was little, I wanted to win it. It is a long season but a great way to continue.”

Meanwhile, Brit Lando Norris is up to third in the championship after a brilliant drive to finish in third place.
The Brit is having an outstanding season for McLaren and has just signed a new three-year deal with the team worth around £6million a season.
He said: “It’s always a dream to be on the podium here in Monaco. It’s extra special.
“I didn’t think it was going to happen. A bit of luck, I want to say some good driving, and a good car all weekend.”
And Ferrari will investigate the cause of the problem that denied Charles Leclerc from starting his home race having taken pole the previous day.
Leclerc, who crashed in qualifying after taking pole, was told his car was OK by the team only for him to discover a driveshaft problem.
He said: “We will have an investigation after the race but it was very very difficult to take.
“I am getting used to this race. I have never finished a race here!”

F1 Monaco Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Verstappen WINS, Hamilton and Mercedes disappoint – reaction, latest updates

MAX VERSTAPPEN produced a masterful drive to take the Monaco Grand Prix and go top of the Driver’s Championship.Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was set to start on pole, but the French driver missed the race after mechanical issues with his car.
Carlos Sainz came in second, while Lando Norris took third with Lewis Hamilton a disappointing seventh.
Follow all the reaction from Monte Carlo in our live blog below…
    MONACO KING
Red Bull star Max Verstappen stood tall in Monaco.
So much so, that Formula One’s official page named him the “King of Monaco”

    VERSTAPPEN TRIUMPH
Max Verstappen claimed a momentous victory at the Monaco Grand Prix in a dramatic race.
Mercedes endured a disastrous performance at Monte Carlo with Valtteri Bottas retiring and Lewis Hamilton finishing seventh.
But Red Bull enjoyed an incredible afternoon as Verstappen inherited pole position after Charles Leclerc was cruelly forced out of his home race.
The Dutchman then masterfully controlled proceedings to take his maiden win around the legendary set up
    GETTY IMAGES
MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE MONACO GRAND PRIX
The Dutchman leads the championship for the first time.
Carlos Sainz is second. Lando Norris is third. Lewis Hamilton is seventh.
    FIVE LAPS TO GO
Verstappen has this in the bag. He would be leading the drivers’ championship if he wins this race.
    HAMILTON SETS THE FASTEST LAP
A new track record for Monaco too. That should get him the extra bonus point.
    LAP 68
Hamilton has a free pitstop for fresh tyres. He is going for the bonus point for setting the fastest lap.
    NORRIS UNDER PRESSURE
He is being pressed by Perez. The McLaren man needs to hold on for a sensational podium.

    STROLL UNDER INVESTIGATION
For failing to keep to the right of the pitlane. He could be in for a penalty here but is 13 seconds ahead of Ocon.
    LAP 60
Stroll pits from eighth place and keeps his position. He started 13th in the race.
His teammate Vettel is in fifth, overcutting Gasly and Hamilton.
    LAP 55
Verstappen, Sainz, Norris, Perez, Vettel, Gasly, Hamilton
    LAP 52
Big one at McLaren as Lando Norris laps teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Things just have not worked out for the Australian at the Woking team.
    SAINZ IN SECOND PLACE

    LAP 43
Vettel’s resurgent form has seen him climb up to fifth. He could be on for his first points of the season.
WOW WHAT A DISASTER FOR MERCEDES
Lap 30 they made a cock up by calling in Hamilton too early. The strategy means he never got past Gasly and was leapfrogged by Perez.
Lap 31 Bottas stops and his front right tyre is stuck on. The thread on the tyre has been machined off. He has been forced to retire from the race.
BOTTAS IS STUCK IN THE PITS
A problem with the front right wheel and his tyres is stuck on the car. It will not come off! He is OUT
    LAP 30
Hamilton pits for tyres. He’s gone first to try and get a move past Gasly and up to fifth.
    LAP 24
Verstappen leads Bottas by 1.133 seconds. Then Sainz 1.213 behind the Finn.
NORRIS ALSO WARNED BY THE STEWARDS
He too has been shown the black and white flag for track limits violations. Another would get him a time penalty too.
MAZEPIN IN TROUBLE WITH THE STEWARDS
The Haas man has been shown the black and white flag for exceeding track limits at the chicane – Turn 10 – three times already. Next one will be a 5 second penalty.
    LAP 8
Hamilton is in sixth behind Gasly. He is unable to get past the AlphaTauri man, who is doing a fine job.
GO GO GO – GREEN LIGHT AT THE MONACO GP
Verstappen gets wheelspin and and has to move across to block Bottas. The Dutchman holds position and Bottas remains in second place, but has to stamp on the brakes into turn one and locks up.
Carlos Sainz in third, Lando Norris in fourth, Pierre Gasly in fifth. Lewis Hamilton in sixth.

    FORMATION LAP
No Leclerc at the start, so a big advantage to Valtteri Bottas, who will start in P3 and on the cleaner side of the grid. And he has no car in front of him.
    LECLERC IS OUT
Ferrari confirm he will not start his home grand prix. The Italian team say there is a problem with the left driveshaft which cannot be replaced in time.
It means the P1 grid slot will remain empty. Max Verstappen will start at the front from the P2 spot.

Erling Haaland takes private jet to Monaco in £1,200 Dolce & Gabbana tracksuit and watches Grand Prix from yacht

ERLING HAALAND enjoyed some well-earned time off on Sunday when he jetted off to the Monaco Grand Prix. The Norwegian capped off his incredible, record-breaking season on Saturday by scoring twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 final day win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Erling Haaland shared an image from a private jet as he flew to Monaco
Haaland, 20, was spotted relaxing on a yacht
The Norwegian chilled out as he looked forward to the race
Haaland, 20, is among Europe’s most wanted footballers, having produced a stunning 41 goal season in all competitions.
But if the stress of constant transfer speculation is getting to him, it certainly didn’t show as he chilled out on his first day off this summer.
Donning a £1,200 Dolce & Gabbana tracksuit, the long-haired ace flew to Monaco by private jet on Sunday afternoon.
Haaland elected to wear his red and white D&G garments, rather than the referee shirt he bizarrely acquired on Saturday, after swapping shirts with official Manuel Grafe, who was taking charge of his final game.
He posted a picture of himself aboard to his nine million Instagram followers, writing: “On the way to Monaco! ✈️🇲🇨🏎🏁 #MonacoGP @f1.”
Upon arrival, he relaxed aboard a yacht overlooking the track, as the action got underway in the Principality.
Wearing a pair of shades, he chatted with friends and enjoyed his rest, ahead of what is set to be a busy few months.
His father Alf-Inge, accompanied by agent Mino Raiola, has already visited some of Europe’s biggest clubs for talks, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Monaco GP results: Verstappen wins in Monte Carlo with Hamilton SEVENTH as Leclerc fails to start after qualifying crash

MAX VERSTAPPEN took victory in a tedious Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, with reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton way back in seventh. The biggest drama came before the race had even began in an otherwise dreary affair in Monte Carlo.

Leclerc looked heartbroken after his Ferrari was withdrawn before the race due to gearbox issues suffered during his qualifying crashCredit: Splash
Charles Leclerc – who qualified on pole for his home race – was forced to withdraw due to the gearbox issues suffered during his crash on Saturday.
As the cars prepared to take their place on the grid, Ferrari revealed it would be a pitlane start at best for the Monegasque racer.
However, as the minutes melted away, it was confirmed Leclerc’s car would not be ready for the flag with the Monaco man forced to sit it out.
Leclerc later tweeted the word ‘heartbreaking’.
It meant Verstappen started from the front of the grid ahead of Valtteri Bottas – with the Finn retiring on lap 31 after the Mercedes team were unable to get the nut off his front right tyre.
It was left up to Carlos Sainz to keep the pressure up on Verstappen, with Brit Lando Norris up from fifth to the final spot on the podium.
Hamilton was left frustrated after losing a place during his pit stop knowing overtaking opportunities were few and far between on the iconic Monte Carlo street circuit.
Ex-Renault star Jolyon Palmer bemoaned the famous race, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: “The cars are too fast – and too big – for Monaco now.”

Verstappen would easily hold on to win the Monaco GP for the first time in his career.
The Dutchman also went top of the championship for the first time ever with the win.
Sainz and Norris took the other podium places – with the Brit calling it ‘special’ to fulfil a lifelong ‘dream’.
Sergio Perez, Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly came fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Hamilton was over a minute back from Verstappen in seventh.
But the Brit earned a little late consolation after snatching the bonus point for fastest lap by well over a second.
Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon and Antonio Giovinazzi completed the top ten.
Kimi Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso and George Russell all finished outside of the points.
Nicholas Latifi, Yuki Tsunoda, Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher brought up the reaer, with Bottas and Leclerc the only two failing to finish the race.

    LECLERC IS ON POLE

    PAIN FOR VERSTAPPEN

RED FLAG LECLERC HAS CRASHED – BUT HE IS ON POLE
Huge drama as the Ferrari man, who was already on provisional pole, crashed at the end of his lap.
He takes pole, as the session is stopped with just 18 seconds to go after crashing at the swimming pool section.
It means Verstappen and Bottas are unable to better their lap times when they were on flying laps.
    HAMILTON IN TROUBLE
He hits the barriers on his flying lap. He is still going but his time is down.
VERSTAPPEN FAILS TO BETTER HIS LAP TIME
However, there is still time. 1m 30sec to go. Track is getting very busy.
WOW LECLERC TAKES PROVISOINAL POLE FROM VERSTAPPEN
This is heating up as the two trade places.
Q3 IS GO. CAN HAMILTON FIGHT BACK OR IS THIS MAX VERSUS THE FERRARIS?
Verstappen takes provisional pole with a time of 1:10.576. Bottas was just 0.060 seconds slower.
This is going to be close. Ferrari yet to show their hand.
    ELIMINATED FROM Q2
Ocon, Stroll, Raikkonen and Russell are also out of the top 10 shootout. Antonio Giovinazzi is through.
    RICCIARDO IS OUT
The Australian is out of Q2. He is in 12th after failing to get into the top 10 shoot out.
That is very disappointing for the former Monaco GP winner, who has been out-shone by his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris.
    MERC STILL OFF THE PACE
Bottas in P4 and Hamilton in P6. Could be a miserable result for the Silver Arrows.
    IN THE DROP ZONE
Giovinazzi, Stroll, Ocon, Raikkonen and Russell. Can the Brit make it in to Q3?
    LANDO NORRIS IS FLYING
He has just put his McLaren in second, between the two Ferraris. That was a great lap from the Brit.
FIRST RUNS IN Q2 AND FERRARI LEAD
It is Sainz ahead of Leclerc. Verstappen is in P3 and Hamilton P4.
Q2 IS GO – GREEN LIGHT IN THE PITLANE
The session is live as George Russell looks to reach Q3 for the first time in his Williams. That would be a huge achievement.
WORLD CHAMPION FERNANDO ALONSO OUT IN Q1
The two-time world champion is OUT at the first hurdle. He joins Schumacher, Mazepin, Latifi and Tsunoda in the TV pen after failing to reach Q2.
IN THE DROP ZONE FOR Q1
Mazepin, Latifi, Ocon and Alonso are in the bottom five. Mick Schuamcher will not take part in quali as he busted his Haas in Q3.
The German will start in last place having been given permission to start the race.
FINALLY A MERC TOPS THE TIME SHEETS
But it is not Hamilton, who is in P7, but his teammate, Bottas.
The Finn is quickest ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen.
    FERRARI IN THE HUNT

QUALIFYING IS GO FOR THE MONACO GP
Who will be on pole? A six-way shoot out. Mercedes have been on the back foot.
The stage is set for Verstappen to take P1. But will Ferrari have a say in that?
IT IS “GAME OVER FOR MERCEDES”
Scathing verdict from Nico Rosberg, who says “there is not much they can do now. They are stuck and in a corner and I don’t hold much hope for them in qualifying “.
Zinger from the former Merc man, who won the title with the team in 2016.
IT IS VERSTAPPEN WHO LEADS THE WAY
Then the two Ferrari drivers as they look in excellent form on the Monte Carlo streets.
But Hamilton goes in to the most important qualifying session of the year in SEVENTH.
SECOND CRASH FOR SCHUMACHER THIS WEEK IN MONACO

RED FLAG BIG CRASH FOR SCHUMACHER
His Haas is busted up. He is out of the car but wow, that is a lot of damage to his car.
The session is stopped but his car is in pieces. Unlikely his Haas mechanics will get that repaired in time for qualifying.
McLAREN RUNNING SPECIAL ONE-OFF GULF LIVERY THIS WEEKEND

    “MERCEDES ARE IN TROUBLE”
Nico Rosberg says his form team are struggling for pace. They are behind Red Bull AND Ferrari.
Hamilton in P5 and Bottas in P6. They have their work cut out if they are to take pole.

Monaco GP qualifying: Charles Leclerc CRASHES but still takes pole as F1 champ Lewis Hamilton finishes just seventh

But the Ferrari driver crashed on his final lap causing significant damage to his carCredit: AP
It was a difficult day for Mercedes with team-mate Valtteri Bottas taking third behind Max Verstappen.
Carlos Sainz took fourth, ahead of Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly with Sebastian Vettel behind Hamilton in eighth.
But it was Ferrari driver LeClerc who ran the fastest time to lead the pack for the first time in his home race.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for the 23-year-old after crashing at the end of his final lap.
The session was forced to be stopped with just 18 seconds to go meaning Verstappen and Bottas were unable to better their lap times when they were on flying laps.
LeClerc now faces an anxious wait to determine the damage to his car but mechanics are likely to be working long into the night.
The suspension took significant damage and he could be punished with a grid penalty depending on the severity of it.
LeClerc admitted himself he was worried about a potential penalty and revealed his suprise at finishing on pole.

Lewis Hamilton could only manage a seventh place finishCredit: Splash

He said: “It’s a shame to finish in the wall, it’s doesn’t feel the same but I’m incredibly happy about my lap.
“I didn’t do a great first corner but then in the second and third sector I nailed it. Just very, very happy to be on pole as it was very difficult to manage myself mentally after Q2.
“I could feel I was quite emotional in the car – now it’s Q3, now it’s time to put everything together. I managed to do so and I’m incredibly happy.
“It’s tomorrow that we score points but we are incredibly surprised to be on pole and fourth place (Carlos Sainz) for the race tomorrow.
“I am worried about a penalty [for the gear box]. I’ve always been very unlucky here, so let’s just wait and see.”
Hamilton exposed Mercedes’ problems on the day and admitted the team will need to get back to the drawing board to pick up success in Monaco.
The 36-year-old said: “The car didn’t feel too bad on Thursday and we made some changes for Saturday.
The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt

“We go back to the drawing board now. There is a lack of grip, so that leaves you to overdrive the car and unfortunately it just didn’t improve.
“It’s a difficult one, obviously. Valtteri was able to get something out of it, but we definitely had some problems today.
“I guess the minimum will be hopefully finish seventh, and then hope we can get any higher.”
