Max Verstappen slams Lewis Hamilton’s British GP celebrations and says ‘if it were me, I would have deserved a kicking’

LEWIS HAMILTON is going in search of his 100th victory in Formula One this weekend in Hungary – but there is one man out to stop him.Furious Max Verstappen is out for revenge after he was KO’d at Silverstone while Hamilton’s win reduced his 33-point cushion in the championship to just eight.

Hamilton, F1’s most-successful driver of all time, has always said he wanted to battle for his world titles.
In recent years he swatted away the challenge from team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel, during the German’s time with Ferrari.
And now, as he bids for a record eighth title to move him clear of Michael Schumacher’s haul, he has got his wish.
This fight between the champion and the challenger has the potential to become one of the sport’s great rivalries.
Wounded from the high-speed crash at the British GP, the Dutchman is down but not out and ready for redemption, openly saying the gloves are off.
He said: “I didn’t know the gloves were on. Who fights with gloves? Nothing changes from my side.
“I didn’t do anything wrong. I fought hard, I defended hard, but not aggressively because if it had been aggressive I would have squeezed him into the inside wall.
“You can say I am an aggressive driver, but I don’t think I am. I am a hard driver. I race hard but I know how to position my car.
“I have not been involved in an accident by running into people, I have zero penalty points and that says quite a bit.”
It is fighting talk from the 23-year-old who was brought up with some tough love from his dad, former F1 driver Jos, who is there to keep his son in line.
They celebrated like it was a world championship win.Max Verstappen
Having been quizzed about Mercedes and Hamilton’s celebrations at Silverstone, the Red Bull driver’s response tells you all you need to know.
He said: “They celebrated it like it was a world championship win.
“If it had been the other way around, I definitely would have deserved a kicking and my dad would tell me that.”
Hamilton is beginning to find that Verstappen is a tough nut to crack this season.
The fact is, Red Bull have a quicker car and Hamilton is having to get his elbows out in a way we have not seen since his fight with Nico Rosberg.
And fans are lapping it up, as the duel for the title has made F1 box office in the hope of this spawning a hatred like Ayrton Senna’s rivalry with Alain Prost.
Flashback to 1989 and the Japanese Grand Prix where the then McLaren teammates collided in a crash that shook the sport.
Then, the following year at the same race, Senna’s first lap collision with Prost that would land the Brazilian driver the most controversial of title wins.

This has all the hallmarks of another simmering feud that looks to define an era of this sport.
What are the odds of a repeat of another first-lap incident between Hamilton and Verstappen this weekend?
It is certainly not unthinkable and, while Hamilton would not be drawn on his relationship with Verstappen, he admits people will tune in to watch how it unfolds.
He said: “I remember when I first started watching the Senna versus Prost period, at the time it was just exciting.
“I had no idea whether the rivalry was good or bad for the sport.
“Today, I think, just like growing up, wheel-to-wheel racing was always the best, from karting. The most exciting part of motor sport is when you see close racing.
“We’re now seeing two teams incredibly close on performance and – I don’t like to compare it to past champions because it is a new era and period of time – but if there’s more people watching then that tells you all you need to know.”
Verstappen stopped short of calling Hamilton a ‘dirty driver’, adding: “That is the first time I heard it like that. I just think he misjudged the corner.”
In a series of digs and pot-shots at his rival during the pre-race press conference, Verstappen added: “As for the relationship? We are racers so we keep going.
“I am not happy with what happened but we keep on pushing, keep fighting for the championship.
“We will race in the right manner going forward, at least from my side.”

Lewis Hamilton overwhelmed by support he received within F1 after suffering racist abuse following British GP win

LEWIS HAMILTON thanked his Formula One colleagues for their support following online racist abuse, saying that he no longer feels alone in the sport.Hamilton and his Mercedes team were subjected to terrible abuse online following his smash with Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix.

There was swift action from F1, the FIA, Mercedes and Red Bull to condemn the abuse while several drivers also posted messages of support.
And the 36-year-old, who has led the sport’s anti-racism campaign, says he was grateful for their support.
Hamilton said: “What I would say is that it was amazing to see the support from the sport, from my team, and from some of the drivers.
“I felt for the first time that I didn’t stand alone in the sport.
“Because for the other years, or the other 27 or whatever years I’ve been racing, no-one would ever say anything.
“When it happened in 2007, no-one ever said anything. So it was really amazing to see the steps that we’ve taken.
“Of course we can’t condone that, and there’s no room for that sort of abuse.
“But if I have to be on the receiving end of that in this industry for people to become aware, then that’s part of my journey, that’s why I’m here.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton has also criticised Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, who announced the country will hold a referendum on what it describes as ‘child protection’ issues.
The new legislation makes it an offence to ‘promote or portray’ homosexuality to children.
Ahead of the Hungarian GP, Hamilton pleaded to his Instagram following blasting the “unacceptable, cowardly and misguiding” laws.

He wrote: “To all in this beautiful country, Hungary. Ahead of the grand prix this weekend, I want to share my support for those affected by the government’s anti-LGBTQ+ law.
“It is unacceptable, cowardly and misguiding for those in power to suggest such a law.

Lewis Hamilton has no regrets over Max Verstappen British GP crash and insists ‘I’d do exact same move again’

LEWIS HAMILTON has risked the wrath of Max Verstappen by insisting he has NO regrets over his role in the Dutch ace’s crash at the British GP.Verstappen span off the track in the first lap after his car touched Hamilton’s during a heated battle for top spot.
Lewis Hamilton has no regrets over his involvement in Max Verstappen’s crash at the British GP
Verstappen blasted Hamilton as the pair touched on the first lap, with the Brit going on to win
Verstappen’s crash meant he was unable to continue racing at Silverstone.
And the Red Bull ace was fiercely critical of Hamilton’s ‘aggressive’ racing style as the Brit went on to win in front of a jubilant home crowd.
But F1 champ Hamilton has hit back by insisting his overtake was spot on.
And if given the chance to repeat himself, Hamilton would not change a single thing.
Hamilton stated: “In terms of the move, I’d do the move exactly the way I did it last time.
“In terms of how I reviewed it, analysed it, and with all my experience, and over the years I have been through a lot, I wouldn’t change it.”
I am not going to hide my emotions. It was an amazing feeling to see so many peopleLewis Hamilton on his British GP celebrations
Hamilton also hit back at claims that his celebrations were ‘disrespectful’ as Verstappen was taken to hospital for checks.
Hamilton added: “I don’t believe our behaviour was disrespectful. As I said, it is one thing knowing [he had gone to hospital] and celebrating what happened and it is another thing not knowing and celebrating.
“Obviously, I wasn’t aware. It was my home grand prix and we worked incredibly hard for God knows how long to get a result like that.
“Emotions were running high and it wasn’t an intentional celebration, it was just the joy of seeing so many people celebrating and being together.
“It was a natural emotion. I am not going to hide my emotions. It was an amazing feeling to see so many people.”
It remains to be seen how Verstappen reacts after he claimed he could have pushed Hamilton into a WALL.
Verstappen said: “I defended hard, but not aggressively. I don’t think I did anything wrong, I could have pushed him into the wall as well.

And he called on the government to rethink their laws banning same-sex marriages and other restrictions placed on the LGBTQ+ community, such as adopting children.
Hamilton, 36, took to his Instagram story with a passionate post sending his love to those affected, set on a rainbow background.
The Brit, who has been a leading voice in the fight against racism and other discrimination too, wrote: “To all in this beautiful country Hungary.
“Ahead of the Grand Prix this weekend, I want to share my support for those affected by the government’s anti-LGBTQ+ law.

“I urge the people of Hungary to vote in the upcoming referendum to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, they need our support more than ever.
“Please show love for those around you because love will always win. Sending you positivity.”
During this summer’s Euros which coincided with Pride Month, Hungary’s law came under the spotlight.
The government, led by Viktor Orban, had recently passed a ruling that banned portraying homosexuality to under-18s.
Germany condemned Hungary’s new legislation – and then the Allianz Arena was lit up in rainbow colours.
There were reports of homophobic chants throughout Hungary’s defeat to Portugal.

It will be the first time the pair have locked horns since their collision at Silverstone two weeks ago.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s rivalry is a volatile landmine and a changing of the F1 guard, claims Damon Hill

LEWIS HAMILTON’S rivalry with Max Verstappen has all the ingredients of an instant classic. That is according to British former racing driver Damon Hill, who described Hamilton and Verstappen’s feud as a ‘very volatile landmine’.

Hill also claims this tug-of-war will mark the ‘changing of the guard’ just like in 1994 when Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna butted heads.
The former Williams driver told the F1 Nations Podcast: “The conflict between Lewis and Max has created a very volatile landmine in the sport.
“The rivalry we are seeing is the changing of the guard for the future of the sport.
“Lewis is hanging on at the end of his career, whereas Max wants to go on and win world championships.

“Lewis definitely has the mentality of ‘I want to stay and win even more and put the record further out of reach’. But he still hasn’t cracked Schumacher’s total.
“This is what’s going on in the heads of these drivers. This is the clash we see.
“We see a man who won’t let go, who won’t give up on a world title because it’s the last icing on the cake. And Max is going to try and stop him.
“And that’s where we saw Michael Schumacher coming on the trail of Ayrton Senna in ’94.

” It’s great when you can achieve dominance, but there’s always someone new coming up. That’s worth fighting for, but you know time is against you.
“A new era will be someone else. And actually letting go of your position, your identity as the man, is pretty hard.”

The two Formula One stars crashed at Silverstone when the Brit tagged the rear right of the Dutchman’s car and sent him hurtling into the barriers at 180mph.
The hefty impact was measured at a G-force of 51G and understandably led to a red flag as he was picked out of the wreckage.
Verstappen was sent to hospital for additional checks and Red Bull boss Christian Horner accused Hamilton, who won the race, of putting his driver’s life in danger with his ‘desperate’ driving.

Lewis Hamilton will donate £20MILLION to help young Brits after launching commission into lack of diversity in F1

Earlier this month he published their report – The Hamilton Commission, run in association with the Royal Academy of Engineering – which identified shortcomings in education, particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Now Hamilton has pledged to pump his money into a new foundation, Mission 44, to act on the report’s findings.
He said: “Supporting the ambitions of under-represented young people has always been important to me and Mission 44 represents my commitment to create real change within this community.
“In my early life, I experienced first-hand how coming from an under- represented background can affect your future but, luckily for me, I was able to overcome those odds through opportunity and support.
“I want to ensure that other young people from similar backgrounds are able to do the same.
“The findings of The Hamilton Commission and its recommendations have provided us with a fantastic basis to begin our work.
“Change within the industry is long overdue but we are now firmly on the journey towards transforming it for the better.”
Hamilton, 36, has also formed Ignite, a joint charitable partnership with his racing team Mercedes.
The multi-million-dollar fund will continue his work.
    FIGHT FOR CHANGE
Hamilton remains the only black driver in F 1. And he added: “Mercedes have long supported my ambition to improve diversity and inclusion within the motorsport industry.
“I am so thrilled that, through Ignite, we are able to work together to achieve this.
“Diverse workforces are not only more successful but are also the morally correct approach for any industry.
“The findings of The Hamilton Commission have provided us a fantastic base to begin our work and I am confident that Ignite will result in real, tangible change within motorsport.
“For 15 years I have remained one of the few black employees within Formula One and I am proud that my work with Mercedes is going to change that for the better.”
Hamilton, who has signed a new two-year deal with Mercedes, has the full backing of team boss Toto Wolff.
Wolff said: “We are delighted and proud to be standing alongside Lewis.
“Lewis has long spoken about the challenges he has faced in motorsport.

“His determination to turn his experience into such powerful and decisive action is a measure of both his character and unwavering commitment to support people to fulfil their potential.
“At Mercedes, we have listened and worked closely with Lewis over the last year to understand how we can help open up our sport to achieve a more diverse and inclusive workforce within our own team.
“The opportunity is both exciting and challenging.”

Red Bull launch official protest against Lewis Hamilton’s ‘lenient’ British GP penalty for Max Verstappen crash

LEWIS HAMILTON is set for an explosive showdown with Max Verstappen ahead of the Hungarian GP.Red Bull are livid that the Brit was given a “lenient” 10-second penalty after being found guilty of crashing into Verstappen on lap one of the British GP and want the incident reviewed.
Red Bull and Max Verstappen were furious with the ‘light’ punishment Lewis Hamilton received for their first-round crashCredit: PA
Max Verstappen’s Red Bull car suffered around £1.3m of damage from this crash
World championship leader Max Verstappen crashed out of the British GP after a first lap collision with eventual winner Lewis Hamilton
The 180mph shunt at Copse corner sent Verstappen into the barriers with the impact measured at 51G.
The Dutchman was flown to hospital for MRI and CT scans to assess his injuries while Red Bull say it caused £1.3million of damage to his F1 car.
In the wake of the incident Red Bull boss Christian Horner said Hamilton’s penalty was “light” and, “given the severity of the incident and the lenient penalty”, they were reviewing all their options.
And the team have now officially protested the stewards’ decision, with the review being heard by the FIA in Budapest ahead of this weekend’s race.
Horner was also critical of Hamilton’s over-exuberant celebrations in front of 140,000 fans as he went on to win the British GP, with Verstappen still in hospital.
In his column on the team’s website, he added: “I am also still disappointed about the level of celebrations enjoyed in the wake of the accident.
“The Mercedes team were aware of the gravity of the crash with Max widely reported as having been hospitalised and requiring further checks”.
Red Bull’s decision to take action will rival Mercedes, who accused Horner of making “personal” attacks on Hamilton for criticising his driving.
Horner believes the occasion got to Hamilton, as he bungled his move on the opening lap knowing he needed a victory to remain in the championship.
Verstappen’s retirement and Hamilton’s victory helped him reduce the Red Bull man’s advantage in the championship to eight points.
And Wolff too senses that their on-track rivalry has gone up a notch since his driver’s home GP – and says he expects more collisions between the two.
Wolff said: “I think that the intensity has increased since Silverstone.
The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
“It certainly will not be the last time they fight for position and hopefully they can do it in a sportsmanlike way. And, if not, we will see more collisions.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen is eager to regain his missed points in this weekend’s race at the Hungaroring and says he is feeling fine after his shunt.
He said: “I’m happy to get back on track in Hungary this weekend, especially after the last race result.
“I’m a little bruised of course but that’s normal after such a big impact but I’m training and feeling good.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

“I did a 24hr sim race this week and it was a good test to see how my body would react to spending time sat in one position for a long time.
“I felt absolutely fine, which makes me feel positive heading into the weekend.”I know what happened at Silverstone and feel a certain way about how my race ended, but now I’m just focusing on making sure we are the best we can be so we can stay ahead in the championship.

Brit Alex Lynn clinches his first Formula E win in London after a dramatic race

BRIT Alex Lynn took his first Formula E victory in his home race under extremely controversial circumstances at the London ePrix.Lynn, 27, took the top step of the podium after the race leader Lucas Di Grassi received a ten second penalty before getting black flagged.
Alex Lynn won his first race in his home city
Di Grassi controversially took the lead under the safety car by going through the pitlane.
Audi’s former FE champion astonishingly leapfrogged from ninth to first place as the rest of the cars were following the safety car.
The pit-lane speed limit is 50mph which meant he could go faster than the rest of the field as he nipped in ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne and behind the safety car.
Di Grassi ignored the ten-second penalty and on the final lap he was black flagged by the stewards, which meant Mercedes’ Nyck de Vries took second place and the lead of the championship with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans finishing third.
Lynn was on pole in the first of the two races in London on Saturday but finished third before responding the following day with victory.
The Londoner said: “It’s hard to put into words, it’s as special as it gets.
“I’ve never felt something like that before, FE has been a difficult for me so it’s very special.”
“I can’t believe this has happened, it’s incredible.”
Lynn’s win on his 40th FE race meant two Brits won the two races in London after BMW’s Jake Dennis won the first race of the double header.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

To add to the controversy surrounding Di Grassi’s move under the safety car, he was penalised for not stopping in the pitlane.
But Audi’s garage is positioned under a bridge, which meant the live cameras were obstructed from seeing whether or not the Brazilian stopped.
Audi’s team principle Alan NcNish sprinted to the stewards doing the race to protest but he was unable to prove the car had stopped sufficiently in the pitlane.
McNish said: “We have quite a unique situation here in lodnon where the pitlane is quite short and also the safety car was unusualy slow.
“And in reality it was quicker to go down pitlane, which the regulations do allow.
“Lucas came to a stop and we were surprised by the amount of time he gained, but unfortunately the stewards deemed he did not stop car sufficiently enough.”
