Verstappen blasts Bottas as he is wiped out by McLaren for SECOND race in a row… & loses championship lead to Hamilton

MAX VERSTAPPEN blasted Valtteri Bottas after he was taken out by a Mercedes for the second race in a row.The Red Bull man surrendered the lead in the championship to Lewis Hamilton after limping home in 10th place in the Hungarian GP.

Verstappen, who was left furious after Hamilton took him out at Silverstone in a high-speed smash that resulted in him going to hospital, fumed: “Again, taken out by a Mercedes!
“That is not what you want. I was missing the whole side of my car and the floor was damaged, too, so it was impossible to drive.
“I tried my best. It is something but not what you want. It is just disappointing. We go again after the break and I will try my best and I hope my car is competitive.
“We have had a lot of freak moments which have cost us a lot of points. We will never give up, focus on ourselves and keep pushing.
He added: “I was missing the whole side of my car.
“And the floor was damaged as well, so almost impossible to drive, to be honest.
“I still tried my very best and I still got one point. It’s at least something – but it’s not what you want.
“These moments, it doesn’t do anything, it’s just disappointing. I know that when we go again after the break, I will be there again and I will try my very best.”
Valtteri Bottas struggled to get going on a wet start at Hungaroring, with the entire pack making the late change to intermediate tyres amid a downpour as the grid formed.
Lando Norris jumped the Finn with an excellent getaway yet was bumped from behind by the clumsy Bottas for his troubles.
That sent his McLaren into Verstappen’s Red Bull, causing damage to both.
Bottas’ Merc had lost a wheel and it then went into Sergio Perez’s Red Bull, taking both out of the race.
Verstappen was able to crawl back to the pits in 13th with the race red-flagged due to hundreds of pieces of debris strewn across the track.McLaren retired Norris during the stoppage.
After being pinned for the Silverstone crash a fortnight ago, Hamilton managed to totally avoid the carnage and raced off into the distance, unscathed.
When the race restarted, Hamilton ended up being the ONLY driver to line up on the grid as, with the weather improving, everyone else went to the pits on their formation lap to change their tyres.
It meant Hamilton got away in first, but the others all quickly followed from the pitlane.
Hamilton then needed to change his own tyres, and having been unable to open up a sizeable lead, fell all the way back to LAST by the time he re-emerged. He ultimately recovered to third with a magnificent drive to claim the championship lead.
And things got even worse for Verstappen as 2nd-placed Sebastian Vettel was disqualified for a fuel violation – bumping Hamilton up and landing the four-time world champion an extra three points.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

Bottas will pick up a five-place grid drop for the Belgian Grand Prix and given two penalty points on his license.
Speaking after the race, Bottas said: “I think that’s fair enough [to get the blame]. I had a bad start and I lost the momentum.
“I misjudged the braking point and locked the wheels. I was responsible in the end for hitting Lando and that meant he cut people off in front of him.”
“It’s not great for me and not great others. It’s not like I did it on purpose.”
Red Bull boss Christian Horner quipped: “Bottas has done a good job for Mercedes today.
“It was very frustrating. We have had some hugely bad luck in the last couple of races in parts and engines but we will brush ourselves down and come out fighting in the second half of this championship.
“It has been a tough couple of weeks but things can turn around quickly as you have seen and there is still a long way to go.
“Thankfully, Mercedes made a howler strategically today and Fernando Alonso looked like he was driving for Red Bull [to hold up Hamilton] and damage was limited.
“Our luck will change. Over the season it will balance itself out and believe you me we will come out fighting in the second half of the season.”
Perez added: “Basically Bottas lost the car in the beginning. It’s clear Bottas made a big mistake and took everyone out of the race.
“It’s a massive blow to us as a team. A big penalty on our side.”
Brit Lando Norris, who was also taken out in the shunt, said: “I am just annoyed. Why risk doing those stupid things?
“If I get a penalty for not doing anything at other tracks then he deserves a lot bigger penalty for doing this. I hope there is common sense.”

Shock Grand Prix winner Ocon runs out of fuel after race leaving him celebrating all alone before he runs to podium

ESTEBAN OCON was forced to RUN back to the podium after missing his marker having won the Hungarian Grand Prix.An absolute thriller in Budapest ended with the Frenchman winning his, and team Alpine’s, first race in Formula One.
Esteban Ocon ran to the podium after Sunday’s shock win
And the 24-year-old was clearly not used to coming home first as he missed the pit lane entrance to park at the winners’ marker set up by marshalls.
That meant he ran out of fuel after a 150-minute epic in Hungary.
Ocon was forced to park on track and jumped out to celebrate alone in front of fans in the stands.
His Alpine team clocked onto his whereabouts and rushed over to roll the car back into the pit lane as the victor ran towards the podium.
A gleeful Ocon finally arrived a couple of minutes later to lap up the adoration of his team.
Amazingly, second-placed finisher Sebastian Vettel also ran out of fuel before he could reach the pit.
The German, 34, jogged back to congratulate Ocon having spent most of the race sat on his rear wing, unable to overtake around the tight and twisting Hungaroring.
Yet it was Lewis Hamilton, in third, who appeared most knackered on the podium.
The Mercedes star could barely muster lifting his trophy after fighting from the back of the pack.

It was Hamilton’s team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, responsible for the mayhem at the head of the pack on Sunday as he crashed into Lando Norris in wet conditions on the start.
Both drivers were taken out of the race in the incident, along with Sergio Perez.
Max Verstappen was also collected but carried on to finish tenth despite heavy damage.

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Ocon WINS ahead of Vettel as Hamilton is held up by Alonso to finish third

LEWIS HAMILTON has fallen just short in his bid to win the Hungarian Grand Prix from last place. The Brit ended up in third after being held up by a stubborn Fernando Alonso for eight long laps.
Hamilton started alone on intermediates after Valtteri Bottas took out Lando Norris and two Red Bulls to get the race red flagged.
And that decision cost him dear as he was forced all the way to the back of the grid, with every other driver on slicks.
Esteban Ocon took his first ever chequered flag after heroically holding off second placed Sebastian Vettel.
Stay up to date with all the action from Hungaroring in our live blog…
    CALL A VET
A lovely gesture from Sebastian Vettel as he calls on Alpine team principal Laurent de Rossi onto the podium for the photos.
De Rossi would have been over the moon with the incredible defensive display both his drivers, winner Esteban Ocon and fifth placed Fernando Alonso, put on today.
    TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
Esteban Ocon was full of praise for Fernando Alonso after his team-mate held Lewis Hamilton up.
ESTEBAN: “What a moment! It feels so good!”It’s fantastic, what can I say? Congrats to Fernando as well, I think the win is also thanks to him with the fight that he did. It’s teamwork, it’s been a fantastic day!”#HungarianGP 🇭🇺 #F1 pic.twitter.com/41CxoLQLkd— Formula 1 (@F1) August 1, 2021

    WHAT AN EPIC
This may take a bit of time to sink in for Esteban Ocon…

    OCON REACTION
He says: “We had some difficult moments this season, we overcame them.
“What can I say? It’s fantastic.
“Sebastian was mega quick the whole race but we managed to hold him off.”
    HAMILTON LEADS THE CHAMPIONSHIP
He said: “Yeah, we came in this weekend not knowing how it would go.
“Considering the circumstances today, I’ll take it.”
    BIG HUGS
Esteban Ocon is greeted by some ecstatic team staff, and a lovely hand shake from Sebastian Vettel.
    IT’S A MARATHON
Literally! The top two are both having to RUN to the podium after running out of fuel on track.
    OCON MISSES HIS MARK
Esteban Ocon apparently does not know where the winner’s spot in the pit lane is, and stops on track!
So do Sebastian Vettel and George Russell, evidently out of fuel…
    WILLIAMS BAG SIX POINTS
    SIX!
George Russell holds of Max Verstappen on the last lap to finish ninth, with Nicholas Latifi eighth.
And Pierre Gasly takes the fastest lap over a late pit stop.
    WHAT A RACE!
That is Esteban Ocon’s first-ever Formula One Grand Prix victory!
Sebastian Vettel takes second before Lewis Hamilton third.
    OCON WINS
A stunning drive, an epic! Esteban Ocon takes the chequered flag!
OCON HAS 1.5 SECONDS ON VETTEL
    Can Alpine start to celebrate?!
    FINAL LAP
Lewis Hamilton has four seconds to make up on the front two, that is probably too much for the Mercedes.
    LEWIS GOES THIRD
Both racers have to go around Daniel Ricciardo to lap the McLaren at Turn 1 but Lewis Hamilton continues his fightback and is on the podium!
    SAINZ IS NEXT
Lewis Hamilton pounces at Turn 2 of Lap 66 but the Ferrari holds onto third.
But his resistance may not last long…
    HAMILTON GETS IT DONE!
Fernando Alonso locks up at Turn 1 and, with five laps to go, Lewis Hamilton goes fourth!
    HAMILTON HELD OFF
Fernando Alonso is doing a stunning job!
Lewis Hamilton looks to have got the job done on Lap 63 but each time, at Turn 2 and 4, the Alpine is in the perfect position to hold onto fourth.
    BOTTAS PENALTY
Stewards have handed Valtteri Bottas a five grid place penalty for the NEXT Grand Prix, at Spa after the summer break.
    A POINT FOR MAX

    LAP 60/70
It is the Alpines with it all to lose going into the final ten laps of this two-hour epic.
Esteban Ocon has a 1.3-second lead over Sebastian Vettel for the lead, with Fernando Alonso doing a top job of holding Lewis Hamilton in the battle for fourth.
    Max Verstappen? Back in 11th.
    GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, LEWIS…
Lewis Hamilton is finding that Fernando Alonso is basically the Giorgio Chiellini of F1 racing.
Overtaking the two-time world champion is an unenviable task – and the Merc star needs to do it soon or this race win will not be happening.
    ALONSO HOLDS OFF HAMILTON
Proper racing between the two veterans and Fernando Alonso holds off the Mercedes as Lap 55 begins.
In seventh, Yuki Tsunoda complains of dirty air off the back of team-mate Pierre Gasly.
He tells team radio: “Tell Pierre to hurry the f*** up!”
Come on Yuki, you’re three seconds behind…
    SAINZ DROPS BACK
There is now a seven-second gap between Carlos Sainz and the lead, have his tyres gone?
No such worry for Fernando Alonso, on quicker tyres and with the Ferrari right on his front bumper.
The Spaniard will need to do the job soon with Lewis Hamilton only a couple of seconds behind – and closing.
    LAP 50/70
Sebastian Vettel is now having a proper go at Esteban Ocon, with DRS on his back.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton asks: “How many cars are you gonna make me overtake?”
The answer his engineer gives is: Four. Toto Wolff jumps in to tell him he ‘can win this’.
    HAMILTON PITS
Lewis Hamilton drops on the Mediums for a fast finish.
In fifth, we could be about to witness a monumental final 22 laps from the seven-time world champion.
Or he could finish fifth, which today would actually be quite decent.

Lewis Hamilton snatches third as Ocon wins crazy Hungarian GP and Verstappen 10th after Bottas causes first-lap smash

ESTEBAN OCON won his first-ever Formula One Grand Prix after a chaotic race in Hungary. The Frenchman took advantage of early mayhem to glide into contention and held off Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton to take the victory.

Sparks flew in the first lap collisionCredit: Reuters
The race began in crazy scenes as rain started falling half an hour before lights out, leading to the entire pack swapping to the Intermediate tyres.
Valtteri Bottas got off the line slowly and shunted into the back of Lando Norris, who had shot ahead in his McLaren.
That sent the two cars spiralling into both of the Red Bulls, knocking Sergio Perez out of the race and sending Verstappen down the order with damage.
A split second later, Lance Stroll also arrived too fast into Turn 1 and took out Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari.
A red flag paused the second race in a row as Red Bull patched up Verstappen’s car and the rain stopped.
Hamilton led the pack out and yet was startled to find he was the only racer NOT pitting at the end of the formation lap, leading to the bizarre scene of the Brit being the only man on the grid for the second lights out.
With the rest of the pack pitting for dry tyres, he was forced to stop after a slow lap on the Intermediates and dropped to the back when finally able to come in.
Ocon and Vettel were the new leaders as a result with points finishes suddenly on for Williams pair Nicholas Latifi and George Russell.

Latifi sat third and backed the pack up nicely for the two leaders to pull clear, before falling away as Hamilton charged into podium contention.
But a stunning show of defence from Fernando Alonso held him back for a few laps in an epic, and unexpected, battle of the veterans in Budapest.
Carlos Sainz’s resistance was more comfortably dealt with but Hamilton could only finish third, behind Vettel and winner Ocon.

Brit driver Jack Aitken rushed to hospital after horror high speed crash left car in tatters at Spa 24 Hour race

BRITISH racing driver Jack Aitken is currently in hospital following a horror high speed smash in the Spa 24 Hour race.Aitken, who is also the Williams F1 team’s reserve driver, was one of four drivers involved in the crash at the top of Eau Rouge.

After an initial crash, Aitken’s car was then hit again by oncoming drivers as his vehicle lay in the road.
Images of his car afterwards showed just how lucky Aitken was to come away from the smash.
French racing driver Anthoine Hubert was killed in almost the same spot in 2019 when he was competing in a Formula 2 race.
But thankfully for Aitken, the high-speed shunt only left him with a fractured vertebra and a broken collarbone.
Aitken tweeted from his hospital bed: “First of all, thank you to everyone who has supported me in the last 16 hours or so, from the marshalls, medical staff trackside and at the hospital, my wonderful team, fellow drivers and all of you sending messages.
“All things considered I feel fine, and quite lucky.
“I’ve broken my collarbone, and fractured vertebrae but it’s stable, fortunately.
“The aim now is to get back to the UK and start to recover as best as possible, and be back in the car soon. I’m sure with the people around me I’ll manage it just fine!
“Finally, a thank you to @lamborghinisc for building a damn strong chassis. My thoughts also go out to the marshal that lost their life yesterday at Brands Hatch.”
Porsche factory driver Kevin Estre, who is driving for Team Rutronik, was also involved in the crash.
All things considered I feel fine, and quite luckyJack Aitken on Twitter
He said: “I was behind Nick Tandy and down in Eau Rouge, and there was the Ferrari just in front of him on the normal racing line.
“I was also normal on the racing line and then suddenly I saw a lot of smoke and a lot of debris in front of me over the crest.
“It was quite a big hit, which spun me and brought me into the barrier. Nick could pass I think on the left side.
“And then there was Perera, which was just behind Aitken with the other Lamborghini, which hit him basically and brought him into me.
“So I think that’s how it happened, but I’m not sure yet.
“As I said, I couldn’t really see – we have to wait for the onboard.”
Prior to the event, Aitken revealed he’d opted to take part in the race to add another string to his bow.
He told Autosport: “This has a lot to do with broadening my skills and myself as a driver.

“You don’t see a lot of crossover between F1 reserve drivers and GT racing, but if there’s a bit of snobbishness about it, I don’t have an issue with that.
“It is proper racing and really competitive, so I’m going to have a hard time — that’s good enough for me.
“I’m learning to drive something different and learning to work in a new way with team-mates because it’s not all about one driver.”

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Hamilton ON POLE and is BOOED by crowd, Schumacher crashes – latest updates

LEWIS HAMILTON and Max Verstappen lock horns again after their thunderous clash at the British Grand Prix just two weeks ago.The pair will get into action at the Hungarian Grand Prix with Hamilton starting on pole today.

Hungarian Grand Prix – 2pm BST

Stay up to date with all the action from Hungaroring in our live blog…
FROM BEN HUNT AT THE HUNGARORING
Lewis Hamilton  lapped up the booing mob as he took the 101st pole position of his career.
The world champion’s bitter feud with Red Bull rival Max Verstappen has spilled over into the grandstands at the Hungaroring, with the Dutchman’s orange army backing their driver.
There were banners in the stands; one said “Sir Cheat: Karam is on its way!” as they blame the Brit for taking out their hero at Silverstone.
But Hamilton, who is going in search of his 100th Formula One victory tomorrow, took it on the chin as Verstappen blew his top as tempers boiled over.
Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert tried to quell the boo-boys as he interviewed the pole-sitter, but Hamilton said: “People have a right. This is a sport and people act wildly. It is sport, it is a competition and I don’t take it to heart.
“In the end, I must be doing something right to be up the front!
“I appreciate the great support I’ve had here. I’ve never actually felt so great with the booing. If anything, it just fuels me. So I don’t really mind.”
    HAMILTON ON POLE
Lewis Hamilton will start from pole for the Hungary Grand Prix after topping qualifying.
    Rival Max Verstappen in third.

THE TOP 10 FOR HUNGARY GP
How the grid will look for tomorrow’s race:

    Hamilton
    Bottas
    Verstappen
    Perez
    Gasly
    Norris
    Leclerc
    Ocon
    Alonso
    Vettel

LEWIS HAMILTON TAKES POLE FOR THE HUNGARIAN GP
The Mercedes man is unable to better his time and it remains Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen.
    HERE WE GO THEN…
But we have a slow train of cars and Hamilton just crosses the line in time for a second crack.
MAX HAS MORE IN THR TANK
Verstappen to his team: “I don’t know why but I just had a lack of grip on this set.”
WOAH – HAMILTON FINDS A STONKING LAP
The stands go silent as the Brit goes quickest on his first attempt with a time 0.550 seconds quicker than the Red Bull man.
It is Hamilton on provisional pole, then Bottas, then Verstappen.
    Five minutes to go….

    FINAL QUALIFYING SESSION
Max versus Lewis. Who is your money on?

    MORE PAIN FOR RICCIARDO
The Aussie is booted out in Q2. He qualified in 11th place and struggling.
To make matters worse for him, he’s seen teammate Norris reach P2 in Q2.

GREEN LIGHT – Q2 SESSION HAS RESUMED
There are six minutes left and it is Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen at the top.
In the dropzone are Giovinazzi, Sainz (who is out), Raikkonen, Stroll and Norris.

RED FLAG – SESSION STOPPED – SAINZ HAS CRASHED
The Spaniard was on a flying and lost control at the final corner, sliding sideways into the barriers.
He is fine but his Ferraris is broken. He is out of qualifying.

    NOW IT IS HAMILTON’S TURN
The Brit is now topping the timesheets in a game of cat-and-mouse. This is good stuff.
GREEN LIGHT AGAIN AND INTO Q2
Who will make the cut for the top-10 shootout?

    TEMPERATURES RISING
Not just the battel between Hamilton and Verstappen. The track temperature has climbed to 62.3 degrees. I am not too sure I can remember when they have been hotter.
    RUSSELL IS OUT
The Brit fails to escape Q1 and he is eliminated. The Williams man is out along with Schumacher, Mazepin, Latifi and Tsunoda.
That is disappointing for Russell, who is still yet to score the team’s first points.
    VERSTAPPEN LOOKING COMFORTABLE
The Red Bull man leads the way.

    FIRST RUNS DONE IN Q1
And Verstappen heads the field from Hamilton.
In the dropzone are Schumacher, who crashed out in last practice and likely to miss out, Mazepin, Latifi, Russell and Tsunoda.

GREEN LIGHT – QUALIFYING IS GO
Qualifying for the Hungarian GP is underway at the Hungaroring. Hamilton vrs Verstappen vrs Bottas.

    QUICK SUMMARY
Lewis Hamilton kept Mercedes at the top of the timesheets, pipping Red Bull championship rival Max Verstappen in Saturday’s final practice session for the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix.
The Briton, who trails Verstappen by eight points in the overall standings, lapped the 4.3-kilometer long Hungaroring in one minute, 16.826 seconds, beating the Dutchman by just 0.088 seconds.
Valtteri Bottas, who knocked Verstappen off the top of the timesheets to set the pace on Friday’s opening day of practice, was third in the other Mercedes, 0.229 seconds off his team mate’s benchmark.
The final session of practice, once again run in sweltering heat with track temperatures climbing above 50 degrees Celsius, set up a thrilling battle qualifying between the two title protagonists, with Verstappen gunning for his fifth successive pole and Hamilton his first in six races.
Tensions between the pair are high heading into the weekend after they collided at the last race in Britain, which resulted in a heavy crash for Verstappen with Hamilton overcoming a 10-second time penalty to win.
Spaniard Carlos Sainz, the power unit in his Ferrari changed overnight, was fourth ahead of team mate Charles Leclerc.
Briton Lando Norris was sixth for McLaren ahead of Verstappen’s team mate Sergio Perez.
    SETTING THE PACE
Here is how the cars were during practice 3.

FINAL PRACTICE – HAMILTON TOPS THE SESSION
The world champion sets the quickest time, but it is incredibly close to Verstappen, who is just 0.088 seconds behind him.
Bottas in P3 means this is going to be a really close call for pole position. Qualifying at 2pm UK time.
    SESSION HAS RESTARTED
While Schumacher is assessed by the medics, the final practice resumes. There is a near miss in the pitlane as Lance Stroll clips an Alfa Romeo.
And out on track Pierre Gasly also had a close one with an Alfa.

    BIG CRASH FOR SCHUMACHER
The German has a high-speed accident and sent spinning into the barrier. He is winded but ok and sent to the medical centre for precautionary checks.

    A LOOK AT LAPTIMES
Bottas continues to show his pace. He is in P1, Verstappen in P2 and Hamilton in P3.
I said it yesterday, but this is going to be a close fight for pole position.
