      F1 Miami Grand Prix practice LIVE: Updates from first US race of the season as Verstappen and Leclerc go head-to-head

      F1 is back this weekend for racing fans all over the world to enjoy with the best race car drivers on earth set to grace Miami for the very first time. This weekend’s Grand Prix has been a long time coming and comes at a vital time in the season with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc level on two race wins each so far.
      And Lewis Hamilton will be hoping he can finish in a better position than he did at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix two weeks ago.

      Chequered flag – Russell tops the times
      No points won on Friday this week, but what a few laps from the Brit, who continues to out-perform Hamilton, who is fourth.
      Leclerc is second quickest and Perez in third.
      Another terrible session for world champion Verstappen, who had a steering issue and missed a chunk of the session.

      Green light – final eight minutes
      Russell tops the times in his Mercedes from Leclerc’s Ferrari.
      Red Flag – Latifi has parked his Williams
      The Canadian has pulled over to the side of the track. The FIA have stopped the session again.

      But not for long….Russell is on top
      Mercedes are definitely back in the hunt. Russell is P1, Leclerc in P2 and Hamilton in P3.
      Game on.

      Leclerc goes quickest
      So while Verstappen struggles, his title rival is look confident in Miami. His Ferrari is in P1.
      Verstappen has further problems…
      He has now got a steering issue in his Red Bull. He is back in the pits after a gearbox change during the break between the two sessions.

      Green light again
      The practice resumes in Miami now the track is clear.
      Still a red flag but looking like a fight between Ferrari and Red Bull

      Sainz of the times
      He has had errors in Australia, Imola and now Miami. He only just has signed that new Ferrari deal.
      The pressure was off but he cannot seem to buy a clean weekend at the moment,
      Red Flag – Another crash for Sainz
      He is in the barriers and has broken his Ferrari. The session has been stopped.
      The Spaniard is out of his car, he is fine, but that is another high profile mistake, which is going to cost him.

      Bottas’s car remains in the garage
      The Finn has a high-speed smash in FP1. His car is back in the garage, but minus an engine. He is out of this session.
      FP2 is go

      Approaching FP2
      If you missed the first session, the heat was a factor for Red Bull, with Max Verstappen struggling with the high temps.

      Still lots of talk about the bling ban
      ICYMI, the FIA were looking to take action against any drivers who wear jewellery under their race suits.
      One driver who was particularly upset was Lewis Hamilton, who promised to defy the ruling, saying he would pullout of the Miami GP.
      Well, the phone in the FIA Towers has not stopped ringing and now they have agreed for a TWO race exemption for him to remove his nose piercing.
      That means, the thorny issue will once again be raised at the Monaco GP.

      FP1 is Done – Leclerc is P1, Russell P2, Verstappen P3
      Mixed bag in Miami, as Ferrari are quickest from Mercedes. Perez is P4, Gasly P5, Sainz P6, Albon P7, Hamilton P8.

      The Ferrari man has a run on the soft tyre and it proves to the quickest of the session.

      Great stuff from Albon
      He is in form and already looking good in his Williams.

      Five minutes to go
      What have Ferrari got? Currently, Sainz is in P5 and Leclerc in P8. Early days but I had assumed they would be further up the board.
      Are they holding back?
      Lap times dropping
      Verstappen is in P1, Albon P2, Russell P3 and Hamilton now in P4. He is 0.825 seconds behind the world champion’s best lap.

      Hamilton goes second
      It seems as though those bouncing problems have been cured. Mercedes said they were confident of making improvements.
      Imola was a bad one for Hamilton, could they be on the turn after a poor start to the season?

      The track is clear and the cars are back on track. 14 minutes of this session to go.
      Red Flag – Bottas crashes
      The Alfa Romeo man is the first man to crash off in Miami. He’s too late on the brakes and slides at speed into the barriers.
      He thuds the tyre barriers with the rear of his car and comes to an abrupt stop.
      He is ok. He has apologised to the team and the session is stopped while a crane removes his broken car.

      What is the F1 jewellery ban and why is Lewis Hamilton refusing to race in Miami?’

      FORMULA ONE mogul Lewis Hamilton has responded to the FIA’s decision to ban drivers from wearing jewellery – by turning up with more jewellery.The governing body for world motorsport clarified that non-regulatory underwear and body piercing were forbidden in the Miami Grand Prix.

      However, Hamilton has delivered his views against the rules put in place and the Mercedes icon has threatened to PULL OUT of the Grand Prix should the FIA stick to their procedures.
      But what is the reason for the jewellery ban and has Hamilton refused to race at the Miami GP?
      What is the jewellery ban?
      The FIA highlighted an existing regulation which states that the ban of jewellery is due to the risk of increased heat transmission in case of fire, or objects snagging or becoming dislodged in serious accidents.
      This ban has existed since 2004 and Formula One race director Niels Wittich plans to keep the rules in place.
      Wittich further clarified the rules by saying: “The wearing of jewellery during this competition can hinder both medical interventions as well as subsequent diagnosis and treatment should it be required following an accident.

      “But what I can say is it’s platinum that I have, so it’s not magnetic. It’s never been a safety issue in the past.
      “I feel like it’s almost a step backwards, if you think about the steps we are taking as a sport, and the more important causes that we need to focus on.
      “I think we’ve made really great strides in the sport. This is such a small thing.”
      However, Hamilton added: “I’ll try and communicate with Mohammed [FIA’s President]. I’m here to be an ally of the sport, of Mohamed and of Formula One.
      “I think we’ve got bigger fish to fry, bigger things to do, more impact to have, so I think that’s really where the focus should be.”
      Will Lewis Hamilton compete in the Miami GP?
      The seven-time world championship winner participated in today’s Practice where he disappointingly finished in 13th place.
      But Hamilton is willing to sacrifice his driving spot if the FIA ban him from further taking part in Miami.
      “I’ve worn [jewellery] for 16 years, had so many MRI scans and not had to take out the platinum, for example, because it’s not been an issue.
      “So yeah, if they stop me then so be it. We’ve got a spare driver. So we’re well prepped for the weekend.

      SunSport understands that Mohammed bin Sulayem, the FIA’s President, is fixated on cracking down on Hamilton, as he flexes his muscles since taking the role in December.
      But Hamilton says he has at least two piercings he is unable to remove.

      Hamilton, 37, is currently seventh in the 2022 standings with an insurmountable 58 points separating him from top spot which is held by Charles Leclerc. 
      He and his team have blamed the “undrivable” Mercedes cars for his terrible performances after he placed a humiliating 13th in his last race in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
      Verstappen, who is currently second overall and won the Italian leg, seems not to buy the reason for his poor form – pointing out that Hamilton’s new team-mate Russell is fourth overall in the standings.

      His comments came after being asked if he enjoyed lapping his bitter rival during his convincing win in the last race: “To be honest, it wasn’t something I was enjoying at the time.”
      He added: “I was just focused on my race, on getting through the traffic as cleanly as possible and winning. I mean, it wasn’t like I was, ‘Oh, I’m lapping Lewis, what an amazing feeling’.”
      Russell, 24, has finished ahead of Hamilton in three of the four races this season with the seven-time world champ already ruling himself out of the F1 title race, just four races into the season.

      He said: “I am out of the championship, for sure, no question. I will keep working as hard as I can and try to somehow put it back together.”
      The Mercedes team have been facing challenges with Hamilton suffering mechanical failures but last weekend’s race seemed to be lost due to pace alone.
      Toto Wolff, the Mercedes chief, apologised for the state of the car.
      He told Hamilton: “Sorry for what you have had to drive today. I know this is undriveable.
      “We are not good enough for a world champion, not worthy for a world champion.”
      Russell, who is doing well despite the car, placed fourth in Italy but did say the severe bouncing causes him pain in his chest.

      In recent years the likes of Susie Wolff, wife of Mercedes chief Toto, Colombian driver Tatiana Calderon and Jamie Chadwick have all been employed as development or test drivers for various teams.

      Chadwick continues to be a development driver at Williams, and earlier this year signed to race for Jenner’s W Series team.

      LEWIS HAMILTON may be waiting a while to get his first race win of the F1 season, but his next opportunity will be at the Miami Grand Prix. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc have so far shared two race wins each this season with Hamilton’s best finish being third in Bahrain.

      It was the Dutchman Verstappen who won out at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix two weeks ago, as Hamilton finished as low as 13th.
      Mercedes have suffered some serious porpoising issues this season but Hamilton seems to be feeling the effect more so than team-mate George Russell.
      Russell finished fourth in Italy last month and is also just outside the top three in the drivers’ championship standings, four places ahead of Hamilton.
      So this weekend’s maiden race in Miami looks set to renew Verstappen’s rivalry with Leclerc, who is hoping to win his first ever F1 title this season.

      This weekend’s F1 Miami Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, May 8 at 8.30pm UK time.
      The race will take place at the Miami Gardens street track in Miami, Florida.
