Ex-F1 star Stoffel Vandoorne eyeing Formula E championship after Monaco win

STOFFEL VANDOORNE is using last season’s Formula E heartbreak to fuel a championship charge. The Mercedes driver stormed to the top of the driver standings after picking up his first win of the season at the Monaco EPrix last week.

The win took him to the top of the Formula E driver standings ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne
But after watching teammate Nick De Vries win the championship while slumping to 9th in the driver standings last year, the Belgian is confident his luck has changed.
The former Formula One McLaren driver said: “Last year was quite a random season.
“There were a couple of occasions where I had my share of bad luck and lost out on big points.
“That’s the way it went, you can’t change it any more and this year I want to leave no stone unturned and leave everything right from my side.

“We are almost half way so there is still a long way to go and you have seen in Formula E things can change very quickly and turn around quite drastically.
“I am not really focussing on the Championship lead, I am just taking it race by race which I have been doing since the start of the year and the key thing is to be consistent.
“As long as I keep doing that job I know I will be able to score points and that is the main focus at the moment and we will see where we end up a bit later.”

After winning the first race of the season in Diriyah, the Dutch driver has scored just one point in the last three races.
But Vandoorne is confident De Vries will bounce back just in a similar way he has this season.
The 30-year-old added: “From Nick’s side I think he is just going through a rough patch which is easy to go through in Formula E.
“If you’re not putting all the little pieces together you can quickly tumble down the order.
“Nick has got the speed and everything he needs to be fighting at the right again.
“ I am convinced he will turn things around and strike back in his own way very soon.”

LEWIS HAMILTON was spotted leaving a club in New York after a night on the town.The seven-time Formula One champion will be racing in the Miami Grand Prix this weekend.

Unfortunately for Hamilton, he is having less fun on the track this season than he is having off it.
The Brit already looks out of the title running after a nightmare start to the campaign as his Mercedes team struggle for pace.
The 37-year-old has accumulated just 28 points in four races and is placed seventh in the driver standings.
Hamilton has cut a frustrated figure on recent race weekends, but he was able to let his hair down before Miami with a fancy night out in The City That Never Sleeps.

It comes after a wretched start to the F1 season, where he has struggled with pace, been beaten by his teammate George Russell AND had a bouncing car to contend with.
But Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is hoping his team have found ways to improve Hamilton’s car for this weekend’s showpiece race in the United States.
Wolff, who saw Hamilton endure one of his worst weekends even in Imola to finish 13th, said: “Since we returned from Italy, we’ve learned as much from the weekend as we can and, in parallel, our learning has continued in the wind tunnel and simulations.
“We have found several directions for improving the car, and we will be conducting experiments in Miami to correlate those simulations, and hopefully confirm the development path for the coming races.

As the F1 action at Miami’s International Autodrome doesn’t get underway until this weekend, Russell had plenty of time to kick back and relax.
And he was courtside to watch the Miami Heat’s 106-92 Eastern conference semi-final win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 24-year-old made it onto the Jumbotron at the FTX Arena during the basketball clash and posed for the camera.
Posting the footage to his Instagram account, Russell threw up a peace sign and grinned after partner Carmen pointed out that he was on the big screen.

The F1 star and Carmen have reportedly been together since 2020, with the beauty believed to work at a London investment firm.

While Russell’s Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton has endured a shocking start to the F1 season, the Brit has fared better during his debut campaign with the team.
Russell has not finished lower than fifth in the four races already completed in the 2022 F1 calendar, and is currently fourth in the Driver Standings.
But he has tipped team-mate Hamilton to come back stronger -despite the seven-time world champ currently trailing Russell by 21 points in the standings.

It was the Dutchman Verstappen who won out at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix two weeks ago, as Hamilton finished as low as 13th.
Mercedes have suffered some serious porpoising issues this season but Hamilton seems to be feeling the effect more so than team-mate George Russell.
Russell finished fourth in Italy last month and is also just outside the top three in the drivers’ championship standings, four places ahead of Hamilton.
So this weekend’s maiden race in Miami looks set to renew Verstappen’s rivalry with Leclerc, who is hoping to win his first ever F1 title this season.

When is the F1 Miami Grand Prix?
This weekend’s F1 Miami Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, May 8 at 8.30pm UK time.
The race will take place at the Miami Gardens street track in Miami, Florida.
There are set to be around 85,000 people in attendance at the race.
Practice One and Two will take place on Friday, with Practice Three and Qualifying scheduled for Saturday,

Now Marko has written off Hamilton’s title chances this season saying he is some way off his big rivals – but reckons compatriot Lando Norris could make a charge.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc leads the standings, four clear of defending champ Max Verstappen.
Speaking to Auto Motor Sport, Marko, 79, said: “The only driver I see coming into this battle in terms of talent is [Lando] Norris.
“But he doesn’t have the best material at the moment.”

Things have not got better for seven-time title winner Hamilton this season as it went from bad to worse ten days ago at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix when he finished 13th in Imola.
It was his worst result of the year so far, but the seven-time world champion was left even more disheartened as he was LAPPED by Verstappen, who then went on to win the race, on the 41st lap.
Now Hamilton must have thought he was having further salt rubbed in his wounds after EA Sports released their front cover for the F1 22 console game.

Verstappen pipped the Brit to the post by a matter of seconds to clinch it in a controversial season finale.
However, this year has been a completely different story.
Hamilton even admitted defeat following his performance in Imola.
After the race, he said: “It’s been difficult, but I don’t really know what to say. It’s definitely not easy.
“I am out of the championship, and there’s no question about that. But I’ll still keep working as hard as I can, to try and pull it back together somehow.
“It has been a weekend to forget for sure.”
