Russian go-karting champ, 15, SACKED after appearing to do Nazi salute on podium before bursting into laughter

RUSSIAN go-karter Artem Severiukhin has been sacked by his team for appearing to perform a Nazi salute on the podium after winning a race.The 15-year-old has been dumped by Ward Racing after the incident in the CIK-FIA European Karting Championship in Portugal on Sunday.

Motorsports’ governing body, the FIA, are also investigating and could ban the young racer.
Strict anti-war rules prevent Russian drivers from racing under their country’s flag and the anthem cannot be played during the post-race ceremonies.
As a result, Severiukhin raced under Italy’s flag where he performed the gesture before laughing.
Severiukhin tapped his chest and held out his right arm, the same gesture used by Adolf Hitler and Italy’s fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini.

Severiukhin has denied, however, that he gave a Nazi salute and instead said he was celebrating and waving at his friends and family.
In a statement through the Russian automobile federation, he said: “I would like to address everyone about Sunday’s situation on the podium.
“I won the round of the European Championship and was very happy.
“I’m from Russia. I thanked the team and my relatives from Russia.

A statement from the FIA said: “The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile confirms that it has launched an immediate investigation into the unacceptable conduct of Mr Artem Severiukhin that occurred during the podium ceremony for the OK category at Round One of the 2022 FIA Karting European Championship at the Kartodromo International do Algarve in Portugal.
“The FIA will communicate shortly on the further steps that will be taken in this case.”
Swedish team Ward Racing swiftly terminated his contract and said his actions are considered a “manifestation of unsportsmanlike behaviour, an unacceptable violation of the ethical and moral sports codex”.
They announced: “Ward Racing is deeply in shame of the pilot’s behaviour which it condemns in the strongest possible terms.
“The actions of Artem Severyukhin during the award ceremony on April 10, 2022 were exclusively individual and do not represent the views and values of Ward Racing in any manner.
“On the contrary, Ward Racing stands with the international community condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expresses its solidarity with the people suffering because of this unprovoked and horrific attack.

Social media has reacted with fury to the apparent gesture, with some calling for the FIA to ban Severiukhin from racing for life.
Severiukhin is not the only Russian sportsperson to cause outrage in recent weeks.
Following Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak wore a pro-war Z symbol while sharing a podium with a Ukrainian athlete.
Putin’s supporters have been seen wearing clothes and badges with the letter ‘Z’ on – referencing their support for the invasion of Ukraine.
The symbol – which represents the Russian phrase for victory – has been visible on Putin’s tanks and killing machines in Ukraine. More

Mercedes and Aston Martin share safety car duties, with the former being on duty for the first two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

And Verstappen fumed at the car for being too slow, which meant the Red Bull man struggled to get any grip from his tyres.

LEWIS HAMILTON says Formula One chiefs will have to CHOP his ear off for him to meet their jewellery demands.Despite body piercings being forbidden since 2004, new race director Niels Wittich addressed the subject directly this weekend in Melbourne.

Wittich says the rule is there to protect drivers in case there is a need for a speedy exit from the car and raised it with Hamilton and his peers in a two-hour drivers’ briefing.

It was a messy contest throughout, with 16 yellow flags and plenty of contact between the drivers.
The pair clashed again after the chequered flag, but this time it was Gibbs who decided to contract Mayer face-to-face.
He stormed out of his No54 Toyota and pushed Mayer hard in the chest, with the drivers exchanging words and shoves.
Gibbs, 19, was clearly furious with the response and started throwing punches as officials and pit crew tried to intervene.
They finally fell to the ground and continued to try getting in shots, only to be pulled apart in front of a stunned crowd.
‘HE JUST SNAPPED’
A NASCAR official was also reportedly hurt in the brawl and taken by stretcher to a hospital.
Mayer – who had taken his helmet off before the punches started to fly – sustained bruising to his face and a black eye.
He revealed that the pair spoke later after the fight to cool the air.
Mayer said: “I just put the bumper to him. He came back over and he was upset and decided to throw a couple punches.
“I was just trying to get his attention and he took it the wrong way. And he just snapped.”

Gibbs gave his side of the story: “I tried to talk to him, and he got all in my face. At that point, we’ve got to start fighting.
“We got put in a bad position there. The only thing I’m mad about.
“He wasn’t going to get past the No16 there and I just got hit in the left rear.
“It’s just frustrating. I just got drove in the fence at the end.”

REIGNING F1 champ Max Verstappen has said he “doesn’t want to think about” the championship, after he was forced to retire from the Australian Grand Prix.The Dutch racer, 24, had another disastrous race – and was forced to retire for the second time this season.

Before his DNF, Verstappen was sitting comfortably in second place with 20 laps to go.
It means that the Red Bull driver has only finished one race this campaign as he aims to win back-to-back World Championships.
More importantly, he is already 46 points behind championship leader Charles Leclerc in the standings.
“We’re already miles behind so I don’t want to even think about the championship fight at the moment – I think it’s more important to finish races,” Verstappen told Sky Sports when asked how crucial those two DNF’s will be at the end of the season.

Verstappen revealed there were reliability concerns.
He said: “I knew there was a problem so it was always going to be a question mark of finishing the race.
“I mean these kinds of things, if you want to fight for the title cannot happen.”
Ferrari driver Leclerc won his second Grand Prix of the season after another commanding performance.

TED KRAVITZ surprised Formula One fans on Sunday when he drank beer from a spectator’s shoe whilst live on air.F1 returned to Australia for the first time in three years at the weekend.

An estimated total of 420,000 fans walked through the gates of Melbourne Park between Thursday and Sunday to watch the Australian Grand Prix – making it the biggest sporting event ever staged in Melbourne.
Most of those fans were there in support of Daniel Ricciardo, who finished sixth in the race behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
And to honour the 32-year-old’s return to Oz, a group were filmed doing his signature celebration – the ‘shoey’.

The FIA had already confirmed Russian Grand Prix has been cancelled after Valdimir Putin’s war march into Ukraine.
The event was scheduled to take place in Sochi on September 25, but will now not happen.
An FIA statement said: “On Thursday evening the Formula 1, the FIA and the teams discussed the position of our sport.
“And the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.”
Max Verstappen picked up his maiden championship in the final race of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December – during a race we will be talking about for decades.
