Or should that be “was”..?
For decades the Monte Carlo showpiece has been the crown jewel of the Formula One calendar.
Famous tracks like Silverstone, Monza and Albert Park have always drawn the crowds and F1 always sees the celebrities flock en masse.

Above all else, though, Monaco was THE race to be seen it.
It will forever hold a place in racers’ hearts too, with Lewis Hamilton speaking of his love for the iconic circuit just days before the 2022 race.
But even the way the seven-time world champion spoke about it suggested he knew something special was coming to an end.
Perhaps it was his career, with Mercedes struggling to match Red Bull and Ferrari in this brave new era of F1.

Or perhaps he, like many of us, realise Monaco just doesn’t quite have that X-factor any more.
In decades past, it was the jewel in the crown that was the F1 calendar.
But with the Miami GP attracting the world’s top celebs and sports stars earlier this month – and the promise of an exhilarating Las Vegas street circuit in 2023 – Monte Carlo risks becoming just another race.
Or worse yet, it could drop off the F1 calendar altogether.
At this month’s Miami GP, for example, sporting royalty including David Beckham, Michael Jordan and Tom Brady were caught rubbing shoulders with Hamilton, as Serena Williams also made her way down the paddock.
Pharrell Williams, Michelle Obama, Gabrielle Union, DJ Khaled, Ashton Kutcher… the A-list went on and on.
Monaco is arguably a victim of its own success. It’s played a huge role in attracting fans to the sport.
But as F1 enjoys an unprecedented boom – in no small part down to Netflix’s hit series Drive To Survive – Monte Carlo is just not big enough to host such an event.
Not only that, with the American market growing at an incredible rate, the new era of fans are itching for exciting overtakes, thrills and spills.
All too often, the Monaco GP serves up a drab affair with qualifying essentially determining the final race position with precious few overtaking opportunities around the street circuit.
Monaco is still on the F1 calendar and there’s no concrete suggestion it won’t be in future years.
But it may be losing some of it’s shine, some of its previously unmatched appeal.
Celebs will always flock to the ultra-wealthy French Riviera and Monaco is still a “place to be seen”.

F1 Monaco Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Leclerc takes pole as Perez and Sainz CRASH in chaotic qualifying ending – latest

CHARLES LECLERC has earned himself pole position ahead of TOMORROW’S race in what turned out to be a chaotic qualifying.The Ferrari star took advantage of a dramatic crash involving Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen at the final turn of the circuit.
Whilst Lewis Hamilton had another poor day at the office as the seven-time world champions finished way down in eighth.

Confident Sainz
Carlos Sainz is in buoyant mood after qualifying.
Both the Ferrari cars occupy pole and 2nd ahead of tomorrow’s Grand Prix.
“Let’s now try and finish the job tomorrow, we are in a great position,” he said.
“We will go for it!”
Unlucky for Hamilton
He was improving his time when the session was stopped. He would have qualified higher up the grid but was not allowed the opportunity to finish the lap.
Red Flag – A crash before the tunnel has caused chaos
Leclerc was on a flying lap and looking to improve his time but behind him, Perez spins at the entrance and goes into the barrier.
But he is then hit by Sainz, causing a blockage on the track and the session is red flagged.
But the flag was a bit late and other cars arrived at the scene at speed.
The upshot it that Leclerc takes pole, Sainz will start second. Perez in third, Verstappen in fourth.
Norris in fifth, Russell in sixth, Alonso in seventh and Hamilton way down in eighth.
Drivers are struggling to beat that time from Leclerc
It was an early run, but it could prove to be the deciding one here.
Leclerc takes provisional pole
A good first crack for the Ferrari man to take P1 for the time being while Sainz is just 0.225 seconds behind him.
Perez P3 and Verstappen P4.
Still eight minutes to go but this is set up perfectly for a grandstand finish.
Q3 is go – the battle for the top 10
Will Leclerc continue his excellent pace or will Perez or Verstappen pip him to pole?
Can Hamilton get inside the front two rows of the grid or even beat his teammate?
And what about Sainz? He’s had mixed form all season, but he is due a win and pole here would help those chances.
Ricciardo is out of Q2
The Aussie is under massive pressure to start delivering for McLaren – and this was another poor Saturday.
He scraped in to Q2 but has not made it into the top 10. He’s under contract until 2023 but there are already rumours about him being replaced at the team.
Schumacher, Magnussen, Bottas and Tsunoda are also knocked out.
Sainz picks Champions League winner
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz took a moment away from the practice sessions to give his opinion on the Champions League final.
He said: “I don’t think Real needs to win because as a team, they’ve done a great season.
“But Real normally tends to win the finals because it’s Real, and they have a lot of experience. Especially these players that they have now, they’ve played a lot of finals together and they know what they need to do to win.
“I was tempted. But it is the typical thing – you go to Paris, you come back, obviously it is not ideal preparation but I still think you can do it but then everyone knows that you’ve been in Paris.
“If something goes wrong on Sunday, it’s because you went to Paris, so it’s the typical thing that you would never do as a racing driver but I still believe it would be doable.”
Leclerc has a moment in the pitlane
He might be the quickest man on track, but he had a mistake there as he missed the FIA’s spot-check at the weighbridge.
Spotting his mistake, he pulled over and needed to be pushed back up the pitlane by his Ferrari mechanics where he was able to comply with the rules for a weight check.
Mercedes off the pace
Both Hamilton and Russell are struggling to match the pace of the Ferrari and Red Bulls.
It could be touch and go here if they make it into Q3.
Hamilton radios the team saying “I told you guys, there rears [tyres] are not ready”.
Q2 gets the green light
The shootout for the top 10 is underway in Monaco. All eyes on whether the Mercedes duo can make it into the top 10.
McLaren’s Ricciardo could also come under pressure too.
Chelsea star seen in Monaco
Chelsea star Mason Mount was present at the FP3 in Monaco with the Red Bull team.
He was spotted having a chat with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
And the England star chose the right team to align with as Perez stormed to victory in the race.
But world champion Verstappen could only finish in fourth.
Q1 is done – Gasly eliminated
The Frenchman was caught out by the traffic in the pitlane following the red flag.
He pays the price for the suspicious call from the FIA.
Zhou, Latifi, Stroll and Albon are also knocked out at the first attempt.
Session has restarted
But what a mess in the pitlane. The majority of drivers are going to miss out on the chance to improve their lap times.
That spells bad news for Schumacher and Bottas, who were the last out.
Red Flag – Session stopped
Somewhat ludicrous as the race steward has stopped the session for what seems to be Tsunoda hitting a barrier.
That said, the AlphaTauri man was still able to carry on and has made it back to the pits.
Seems like an over reaction from the FIA in that instance, but safety first and all that…
Tight at the top
Not too much to separate the Ferraris and Red Bulls at the top but at the bottom, Ricciardo is under pressure. Norris too in danger.
Vettel in the danger zone
The four-time world champion is currently in 16th place in the the bottom five.
He could be eliminated here from qualifying at the first hurdle.
Qualifying for the Monaco GP is go
The battel for P1 has the green light and it is already a busy track. Ferrari are the last cars out but are both now joining the action.
Leclerc on Monaco as race destination
Charles Leclerc is adamant that F1 races should still be held in his native Monaco.
The Ferrari driver was pipped to victory at FP3 on Saturday by Sergio Perez.
But he insists Monaco is a good destination for races, saying: “F1 has some historic tracks like Silverstone and Monza – and Monaco too – and they should stay on the calendar.
It would be a bad move for both parties [to remove Monaco]. I have never known Monaco without F1 apart from COVID reasons in 2020, and F1 without Monaco for me is not F1.
Monaco is one of the best tracks out there, in terms of qualifying there are no places I enjoy as much as here, where the driver can make as much difference.”
Traffic hold up
There was a few traffic incidents in the practice session.
Max Verstappen being held up by Guanyu Zhou.
Sergio Perez blocked George Russell, and two incidents involving Carlos Sainz also caught the stewards’ attention.
Sainz’s issues involved Aston Martin drivers Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel.
Perez denies Leclerc a clean sweep
Ferrari ace Charles Leclerc was denied a clean sweep by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in Saturday’s practice session.
Leclerc was the quickest in both practice sessions on Friday.
And he looked set to clinch his third win in a row before Perez pipped him right at the race’s climax.
Hamilton on title and retirement
Lewis Hamilton has admitted that it’s unlikely that he’ll win the F1 title this season.
But he vowed to carry on racing until he can no longer do so physically.
He said: “I probably won’t win the title, but I feel the same pleasure of competing as when I started. Why should I stop? Maybe one day I won’t be able to take the pressure anymore, I’ll be tired, but that day hasn’t come yet.”
FP3 is done – Perez tops the timesheets
The Mexican takes the top spot in the final session with a time of 1:12.476.
Leclerc is second quickest just 0.041s behind him and Sainz in third 0.370 behind the Red Bull man.
Verstappen is fourth, Gasly fifth, Norris sixth, Hamilton seventh, Magnussen eighth, Russell ninth and Alonso tenth.
Stroll hits the barriers
His Aston Martin is damaged but he is able to make it to the pits for a front wing change.
I know he’s the owner’s son, but he must surely have to start delivering soon, surely…
Vettel and Sainz have a near miss
The German is not happy by the Ferrari man’s driving. He delivers an expletive-laden message over the team’s radio.
The incident has been noted by the FIA and the Spanish driver could be in for a penalty.

Monaco Grand Prix qualifying chaos as Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz crash before Charles Leclerc takes pole

CHARLES LECLERC took pole ahead of Sunday’s Formula One Monaco Grand Prix after Sergio Perez’s crash brought qualifying to a halt.Perez spun out at turn 7 just before the tunnel, smashing his back wing into the barrier.

Leclerc’s team-mate Carlos Sainz wasn’t too far behind the Mexican and his back tyre collided with the Red Bull.
Driver’s Championship leader and current F1 world champion Max Verstappen slammed the brakes on just in time, avoiding a pile-up.
Leclerc will start on pole in his hometown after clocking in a time of 1:12.569.
The 24-year-old has finished on pole for the second year in a row but he’ll be hoping there’s no driveshaft issues this time around.

On the qualifying result, Leclerc said: “I’m so incredibly happy. I knew the pace was in the car. I just knew I had to do the job.”
Perez’s spin-out wasn’t the only incident in Q3 with two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso crashing head-first into a barrier.
In the Mercedes camp, despite the strong showing in Barcelona last weekend, both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton trailed behind the Ferraris and the Red Bulls.
Alonso is sandwiched in between the two Mercs with Russell starting in p6 and Hamilton in p8.

Hamilton, 37, admitted he has already given up on winning this year’s driver’s championship.

Hamilton even said he was “f***ing losing his mind” in Friday’s practice session as his porpoising problems returned.
Nevertheless he insisted that he remains committed to the cause, and vowed he is not one to shirk a challenge.
Hamilton continued: “I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13. We’ve had amazing times together.
“We’ve ridden the highs and lows together. I am 100 percent committed to this team. There’s nowhere else that I want to be.

He also made a statement by wearing multiple pieces of jewellery, including bracelets, rings, a necklace and a watch.

Hamilton has made it clear that he is opposed to the new regulations.
He was granted a two-race exemption for Barcelona and Miami when told he had to remove his nose stud.
But the Mercedes man has said that it can only be removed with surgery.

Born in France to an English horse-breeding father, the tale of Grover-Williams is equal parts incredible and heartbreaking.
When he was 11, he was sent to live with family in Hertfordshire to seek refuge during World War I.
On the Great War’s conclusion he returned across the Channel, moving his family to Monte Carlo – where his love of cars first blossomed.
Grover-Williams learned to drive in a Rolls-Royce and quickly earned his licence in Monaco, before buying a motorcycle and competing in motorbike races throughout the 1920s.

He kept the incredibly dangerous sport under wraps from his family, riding under the pseudonym W. Williams.
By 1926 the French-born Brit had transitioned to motor racing, driving in Bugatti races throughout France, before entering the Grand Prix de Provence and the Monte Carlo Rally.
Two years later he won the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours, before winning again in 1929.
1929 also saw the first-ever Monaco Grand Prix… which Grover-Williams went on to win.
The Brit dominated F1, winning the Grand Prix de la Baule three years in a row, as well as the Belgian GP at Spa in 1931.

However, his career came to an end in the 1930s, before war broke out in 1939, as Nazi Germany invaded Poland.
As the Nazi’s occupied France, Grover-Williams fled to England where he joined the Royal Army Service Corps, but was immediately recruited by the Special Operations Executive due his fluency in the French language.
He teamed up his racing driver friend Robert Benoist, working in Paris setting up a host of successful operations, setting-up sabotage cells and welcome parties for Allied parachute operations.
Unfortunately, in August 1943, he was captured by the Nazis and was subjected to lengthy interrogation before he was deported to Berlin.

Grover-Williams was held prisoner at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, were he was executed just months before the war ended.
Remarkably, there is a conspiracy theory surrounding Grover-Williams which claims he in fact survived the war under the pseudonym Georges Tambal.
‘Tambal’ is said to have lived with Grover-Williams’ widow for many years after the war.
Whether there’s any truth in it or not, we know his fascination for pseudonyms and his never-say-die attitude from his racing days…

But for much of the year, Hamilton snubs his London mansion, New York penthouse and Colorado ranch for a life in Monaco.
Although not much is known about where his property is, he once shared a snap of his wonderful view.
He captioned a photo on social media: “A place I call home, Monte Carlo. I am so blessed to live in such an incredible place. God is really shining down on me today.
“Sending you light & love for your day. On my way to Spa, let’s do this!!!”
It is believed he resides in the exclusive Fontvieille district.
Back in 2007, it was reported he was interested in a 2,000sq ft, four-bedroom duplex with views across the Mediterranean in Fontvieille’s Seaside Plaza.
Speaking of the Mediterranean, Hamilton has been seen enjoying watersports during his time away from the circuit.

MAX VERSTAPPEN
The man who controversially pipped Hamilton to the 2021 championship, Verstappen’s lifestyle in Monaco is more paired down than his rival’s.
But that said, it’s clear he doesn’t skimp either. The Dutch star is said to rent an apartment that’s worth around £16million.
His home is believed to be in the same apartment block as Felipe Massa and Daniel Ricciardo, which he was once filmed allegedly entering drunk after a night out.
During the first lockdown, he gave us a glimpse into his home when he shared his workouts from his balcony that overlooks the Mediterranean sea.
It’s also where girlfriend, Brazilian model Kelly Piquet lives with him.
Verstappen is said to have a car collection in Monaco to die for, and recently ordered the £2million Aston Martin Valkyrie.
And like his speedy nemesis Hamilton, he likes watersports to – often seen whizzing around on a Red Bull sponsored jet-ski.

DANIEL RICCIARDO
Like Hamilton, Ricciardo has other abodes, most notably in Beverly Hills and in Perth.
But, when the former Monaco Grand Prix winner is competing he lives in his comfortable one bedroom pied-à-terre in the city.
And he absolutely loves living in Monaco, as his Instagram reveals.
He drives a super fast McLaren 720S around time, worth around £215,000.
And when he’s not on four wheels, he takes his scooter for a drive around the Monaco Grand Prix circuit.
Of the Grand Prix, the Aussie has revealed how the city changes when it’s race weekend.
“It feels like a real racetrack, and I’m not thinking ‘there’s a cafe I eat at’ or ‘there’s a street I ride my Vespa down’ or whatever,” he revealed.
“You wake up in your own bed, kick around your apartment and then start the journey to work.”

VALTTERI BOTTAS
The Finnish driver lives with Australian professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell in the city.
However, they opt for a more private life in Monte Carlo, like they do in his homeland, where he owns a beautiful lakeside holiday home.
He did share his stunning view from his apartment balcony overlooking the harbour once upon a time though, giving fans a glimpse into his lifestyle.
Bottas also has the cycling bug, often competing in races around Monaco in his spare time.
When he’s not driving a race car, Bottas is seen driving his £115,000 Mercedes-AMG GT.
To keep fit, Bottas goes running around the Monaco Grand Prix circuit he races on.

Leclerc is born and bred in Monaco, so he has absolutely no reason to leave.
He has a luxury apartment, which he lives in with gorgeous girlfriend Charlotte Sine.
Hilariously, when she was locked out of the home, Charlotte had to subscribe to his Twitch channel because he couldn’t hear her as he was playing a racing simulator and had a headset on.
“So my girlfriend had to subscribe to my twitch channel to tell me to open the door,” he later revealed on Twitter.
Leclerc has a gang of friends he loves spending the summers with.
They hop on board his £1.5million yacht, Monza and cruise around the Mediterannean.
And when he’s not on sea, he’s on grass on the golf course working on his handicap.
It’s a glam life for some living it up in Monte Carlo.

After last weekend’s finish to the Premier League, Mount, who has also been pictured alongside England teammate Phil Foden, has been given some downtime before he reports for international duty next week.
And he’s chosen to spend it in Monaco attending the famous Grand Prix weekend at Monte Carlo.
The two are guests of Red Bull for the weekend, and were pictured arriving at the Red Bull Racing Energy Station.
He was pictured down in the paddock in the Red Bull garage, chatting with Sergio Perez and the defending world champion and current world championship leader Max Verstappen.
Mount and Foden are just two of the many top celebrities who will make the journey to Monaco this weekend, with the Grand Prix being notorious for its glitz and glamour.
Mount, who’s been known to be big on his fashion, was also sporting a pair of black and white converse shoes with his black trousers, to give the full motorsport look.
The 23-year-old has been winding down after helping his Chelsea side to third-place finish in the Premier League.

The Blues also reached the finals of both domestic cups, losing on penalties to Liverpool in both of them.
