MAX VERSTAPPEN took a sensational pole in the wet and will start at the front of Sunday’s Canadian GP.The world champion was a staggering 0.645 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso, who was a surprise in second place, while Carlos Sainz qualified in third.

Lewis Hamilton, who had been plagued by back problems caused by his bouncing Mercedes, looked to have done the unthinkable with an excellent first attempt that was good enough for provisional second place.
The seven-time world champion was eventually bumped down to qualify in fourth place but hailed his achievement in the wet as his best of the season.
Hamilton said: “This past week has been a real challenge and every day working through the pain and getting my body right.
“We are still struggling with the car, so to get top four in those conditions is awesome.

“It is my best qualifying this season and feels similar to my first-ever qualifying in Australia in 2007, I was so excited.”
But it was Verstappen who was in a class of his own with a stunning lap time that was simply untouchable.
He said: “In tricky conditions we stayed calm and made no mistakes, so I am happy with pole.
“You were really on the edge with the grip but then it became more enjoyable as the track dried and luckily it all worked out in the end.”

“It has been an unbelievable weekend and we have been competitive and thanks to the wet conditions, the car was mega and I was so comfortable.

Norris has had a stellar rise during his 3½ years in Formula One.
And while he is yet to win a race, he has attracted an army of fans from across the world.
However, the McLaren driver admits he still gets nervous in front of big crowds — and will do at the sold-out British GP in two weeks’ time, where he will be presented on the stage at the Fan Zone.
Ahead of the Canadian GP in Montreal, Norris said: “To have one race a year where it is over the top, you have to be careful and try not to do too much to take the focus off why you are there.

“But having that experience of so many fans — like the fan stage last year with everyone chanting your name — it is a special feeling.
“I never expected that growing up. I’ve never been one for festivals and stuff like that, so I am not confident standing up there.

Norris is not only backed by the Brits, he gets a lot of support at most of the races, especially in Europe.
It is unique for a driver to hold a place as everyone’s second favourite and he would certainly be THE most popular world champion should he ever win.
But for the time being he says he will strive to continue to keep growing his fan base.
He added: “I do seem to have a lot of fans everywhere I go, whether it is in Italy or Spain.
“What has helped is that I am not in a team that is fighting for a championship straight away.
“So I came into it a bit more with everyone happy supporting someone who’s not winning. Maybe it’s cooler than coming in straight away in a car that’s winning, because they don’t want to be glory supporters.
“But also I am hoping it is because I am just a normal guy and someone they can relate to.
“I will do my best to stay as I am and hope everyone continues to support me, because I want that. The more the merrier.”
Meanwhile, Norris says he has no issues with McLaren using team orders in Baku last week to keep team-mate Daniel Ricciardo ahead of him.
While he was initially annoyed with the instruction, he says his team acted in the right way.
Norris — who still holds a 35-point advantage over the Australian — said: “It’s eighth or ninth, either way around, I don’t really mind.
“I’m only here to win races and win a championship. I’m not going to win the championship this year.
“Instead it’s just about making sure we can get the most points for the constructors.

Williams driver Latifi declared in December how he had received shocking abuse following his crash in the Formula One season finale.
The Canadian ace crashed into the barriers on lap 54 which resulted in a safety car being deployed.
This ultimately wiped out Hamilton lead in the Middle East, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen then pipping him to a record eighth world title on the last lap.
And with the abuse so extreme, Latifi has said he felt obliged to take measures to protect himself when he was out with his model girlfriend Sandra Dziwiszek.
Speaking at Williams’ car launch before the season, he remarked: “It sounds silly to some people but at the end of the day, you don’t know how serious people are.
“All it needs is one drunk fan at an airport, or you bump into someone who is having a bad day and they are intoxicated under the influence of something and they have these really extreme opinions.

“I was back in London after the race, and I had security with me when I went to Winter Wonderland with my girlfriend.
“You have to take the threats seriously because you don’t know what might happen.
“And it is just an unfortunate reality of the world we live in and there were extreme death threats which went way over the line.”
Latifi then revealed that Hamilton sent him a classy message of support where he was quick to check in on him following the abuse.
He added: “In terms of the support I got from it afterwards, Lewis did send me a message just a few days before I released the statement.
“Obviously I won’t go into details of what he said. I did get some messages of support from other team members at Mercedes as well.
“Obviously the whole outcry of support on social media from multiple drivers, teams across so many different disciplines was really nice to see, encouraging to see.
“Obviously, everyone agreed with the whole sentiment and messaging.” More
