      Lewis Hamilton reveals his Mercedes car is getting close to its best after another podium finish at Austrian GP

      LEWIS HAMILTON has revealed his car is getting back to it’s best as the Mercedes team worked hard to turn things around at the Austrian GP.Hamilton, 37, rounded out the podium on Sunday, making it three third-places in a row.

      He was helped by Carlos Sainz’s car catching fire and Sergio Perez’s retirement after he collided with George Russell at the start.
      But he held on to third without too much trouble to secure a spot on the champagne stand.
      The seven-time champ has looked more himself in recent weeks and seemed bouyed by a third place finish at home track Silverstone last week.
      He was complimentary about the car after Sunday’s success, moving on from early season ‘porpoising’ complaints.

      Hamilton said: “Honestly, I do feel like every now and then our qualifying pace looks like we could have been in the top three, and obviously with the crash that wasn’t possible.
      “And then completely new car, everything, strips, new chassis, obviously same engine but changed the gearbox I think, all the corners, everything.
      “And then that, you firstly don’t want to damage the car again, the car definitely didn’t feel exactly the same as what I had on Friday, but very, very close and it just seemed to get a bit better as I got more dialled in with it.”

      And Hamilton looked quick in Friday’s Austrian session before losing control of the rear end and crashing out at 140mph.
      But eventually the Brit ended up happy with the top three finish.
      He added: “I mean especially after a difficult Friday with the crash which was not expected and I’m really so still sorry to the team of course, but just so proud of everyone for working so hard to rebuild the car.
      “And also just proud of everyone back at the factory for continuing to work hard. I know, they’re going to have to know what they do with those bits that I destroyed. But hopefully we have some new better bits to come after that.
      “So this is a great recovery for us as a team to get a third and the fourth is some really good points.
      “And so we have just got to keep our heads down and keep chipping away and we’re slowly eating into the guys ahead.” More

      The social media post triggered an outpouring of comments complaining of similar abuse, which included homophobic and racist slurs.

      Verstappen was closing fast in the final laps of the race, but Leclerc managed to coax his car home to score his first P1 since Australia on April 10.
      The result reignited Leclerc’s hopes of a maiden world title, and cut Verstappen’s lead at the top of the standings to 38 points.
      Speaking after his win, Leclerc said: “It was a really good race, the pace was there and the end was incredibly difficult with the throttle problem, but we managed to make it stick until the end.

      Esteban Ocon (Alpine) took the chequered flag in fifth ahead of Schumacher (Haas), who backed up his first points in F1 last weekend with another top 10 finish.
      Lando Norris (McLaren) finished seventh, with Kevin Magnussen (Haas) eighth, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) ninth and Fernando Alonso (Alpine) rounding off the points in tenth.

      The Spaniard pulled his car to a halt on the side of the track and just seconds later it suddenly burst into flames.
      Sainz stayed behind the wheel for a few seconds as the flames spread, before a track marshal finally got to him and Sainz dramatically bailed out.
      Flames poured out of the Ferrari as Sainz escaped as the car rolled backwards.
      It was Sainz’s fourth mechanical failure of the season.

      Carlos Sainz Sr, 60, races for Acciona | Sainz XE Team in the Extreme E off-road series and was competing in the Final of the Island X-Prix in Sardinia, Italy when the smash occurred.
      Sainz Sr was in the lead when he was hit by Rosberg X Racing’s Johan Kristoffersson, causing his car to flip.
      The Spaniard, who just days ago watched his boy win his first-ever F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone,  was left momentarily trapped in the wrecked motor before he was finally able to exit it by himself.
      Sainz Sr was instantly taken to hospital, while Kristoffersson received a 30-second penalty as he earned his team a third-place finish.
      Sainz Sr later eased fears over his condition later that evening on social media – but he slammed the penalty decision. More

      When speaking to Sky Sports, Sainz said:
      “I knew there was something wrong as soon as it happened.
      “There was no feedback that it was about to happen. It was very sudden and it is hard because it was a big loss of points and a potential one-two for the team.
      “I saw a lot of fire and damage and we will have to look at why this is.
      “It is more difficult to take because we were about to bring in a very big result to cut the gap to Max and Red Bull, but it is still a long season ahead.”

      “It is a big shame for us, I clearly felt that we did everything we could to avoid an incident.
      “George couldn’t control the speed into turn four and and we ended up making contact when I was clearly ahead.

      “The car has not been up there this week so there is some good analysis to be done.”

      “They were very important points today and congratulations to Ferrari, they had a quicker car throughout the majority of the race.
      “Max was coming back at the end there but our tyre deg was higher from halfway through the first stint and it was hard to combat that.
      “Ferrari just seemed lighter on the tyres and obviously they had a pace advantage and that gives you more strategic options.
      “Losing Checo was obviously hugely disappointing.
      “It is unlucky for them today with Carlos but our pace at the end of the race, we still have the fastest lap, but we didn’t have the range we had yesterday and that is something we need to understand.
      “Over the two races we have only given away five points with Max so it is not too bad. We will bounce back in France.”

      “Weirdly [the throttle issue] was more or less the same time [as Sainz’s retirement], so I had it in my mind.

      Homophobic and racist abuse by fans cast shadow over Austrian GP as F1 and Lewis Hamilton slam ‘unacceptable’ harassment

      FORMULA ONE chiefs and Lewis Hamilton have condemned the “unacceptable” harassment reported by a number of fans at the Austrian GP.Over the course of the weekend, fans have complained on social media about the abuse, which included homophobic and racist slurs.

      The fans’ reports have been elevated to F1 chiefs, who are taking the matter up with the Red Bull Ring.
      And Hamilton has also taken to social media to slam the abuse.
      It comes after former F1 champion Nelson Piquet used racist and homophobic words in a recently aired interview and has subsequently been banned.

      Hamilton, who only yesterday criticised fans for cheering his crash during qualifying was also quick to criticise the behaviour.

      LEWIS HAMILTON is fuming with fans from Max Verstappen’s ‘Orange Army’ who cheered as he crashed out of qualifying on Friday.The seven-time World Champion looked quick in Friday’s session before losing control of the rear end and crashing out at 140mph.

      Hamilton, 37, emerged from the smash physically unscathed, but was left angry at fans who cheered the end of his qualifying session.
      The Brit said: “I didn’t hear they were cheering at the time of the crash. I was going through a bunch of stuff, but I heard it afterwards and I don’t agree with any of that, no matter what.
      “A driver could have been in hospital, and you are going to cheer that? It is mind-blowing that people would do that, knowing how dangerous our sport is.”
      The dangers of the sport have been massively highlighted in the last two race weekends after Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu had his car flipped upside down and crash into the track barriers at 160mph.
