Piquet’s comments were widely condemned by the F1 world, who rallied behind Hamilton and presented a united front on the discrimination in the sport.
And days after axing junior driver Juri Vips for using racist language, Red Bull supremo Horner has echoed that sentiment.
He said: “First of all, we are appalled by Nelson’s comments and it’s from an interview from some time ago.
“But we’ve obviously had an instance with one of our young drivers earlier, or at the end of last week, and we took very definitive action when he made a racist comment.

“And so we took action and we immediately removed him from the team.
“So we put out a statement about Juri and this one comes out and we felt we had made a very strong statement through [the] action of actually dropping Juri from the team – [we are] not in any way condoning any form of racism or discrimination.”
Red Bull failed to put out a specific statement condemning Piquet, the father of Max Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly, after his comments emerged.
But Horner believes the message the team put out in the wake of Vips’ axing was sufficient.

He said: “We put out a statement earlier in the day about Juri, about having zero tolerance for racism, and to then put out another statement about Nelson Piquet…
“Of course, we are fully behind Lewis, we are fully signed up to the Hamilton Commission and we felt actions sometimes talk louder than words, and the action we took with Juri was obviously draconian but in line with the policy we have.”
Piquet, 69, issued a grovelling apology for his use of the racial slur but insists he didn’t use it in an offensive manner.
He said: “What I said was ill-thought-out, and I make no defence for it, but I will clarify that the term used is one that has widely and historically been used colloquially in Brazilian-Portuguese as a synonym for ‘guy’ or ‘person’ and was never intended to offend.
“I would never use the word I have been accused of in some translations.
“I strongly condemn any suggestion that the word was used by me with the aim of belittling a driver because of his skin colour.

GEORGE RUSSELL was one of the first on the scene after Zhou Guanyu’s horror crash at the start of the British Grand Prix.And footage has now emerged of the Brit frantically calling over for assistance as he stood next to Guanyu’s overturned car.

The Alfa-Romeo flipped into the air before skidding off track upside down – with Guanyu’s life saved by the Halo.
But his car ended up wedged in between a fence and a tyre wall, which meant Russell and the two marshals first on scene could do little to help.
The Mercedes star was able to call over others to help Guanyu with the marshals giving a thumbs up to confirm the Chinese driver was conscious.
Russell was also involved in the incident that caused crazy crash and he too was forced off track.

Thankfully for Guanyu, he was not seriously hurt in the accident with Alfa Romeo declaring that he is OK.
Guanyu was able to be taken out of the car, where he was instantly placed on a stretcher on his way to receive further medical attention, where he was declared fit and released from the circuit’s medical centre.

The crash came about after Russell was clipped at the back of his Mercedes, with his tyre subsequently hitting Zhou.
His vehicle instantly flipped over where he skidded towards the barriers at a frightening pace.
It then catapulted over the tyre barrier as it smashed into the fence.
His halo undoubtedly prevented serious injury.
It is the second time the halo has potentially helped avoid a fatal incident following Sunday morning’s F2 race.
Dennis Hauger’s car was launched into the air after he connected with a sausage curb on the second lap.
He then flew into Roy Nissany, with the Israeli driver miraculously appearing to avoid injury despite the collision.
Speaking after the crash, Russell told Sky Sports: “Firstly I’m glad to see Zhou is OK after an absolutely horrific incident.
“Ultimately we took a risk starting on the hard because I made a mistake in qualifying and we were starting out of position.

“We thought that risk gave us the best opportunity later in the race, but there was just no grip whatsoever.
“The hardest compound is cold out there and I got swamped by all the cars. Next thing I know I got touched, was in the side of Zhou and that was it.
“I jumped out of the car to asee if Zhou was OK. I saw it was red flagged straight away.
“When I came back to the car I couldn’t quite get it started for whatever reason so I ran back to the team to check.
“I told the marshals to leave the car and when I got back it was on the back of the flatbed. As soon as you get assistance you can’t restart.
“We are trying [to appeal] but they are pretty adamant, the FIA. It’s one of those unique scenarios.”
Polesitter Carlos Sainz would go on to win the race ahead of Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton. More
