      The two-time world champion is expected to earn around £25million a year from Aston, as team owner Lawrence Stroll digs deeper into his huge pockets.
      Stroll, whose son, Lance is the other driver in the team, has invested heavily into their F1 operation and the luxury car brand.
      Alonso’s signing represents the latest attempt to propel the F1 team to their goal of winning titles, despite falling towards the back of the grid in recent years, despite substantial recruitment.

      Throughout Aston Martin’s history, the car company has been saved from bankruptcy a number of times and under Stroll’s ownership is it again proving tricky to steer into the black.
      A recent deal with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund has released extra capital while the Canadian billionaire recently assured customers they were working through a back-log of orders due to a supply issue with parts.
      His decision to hire Alonso is understandable, for he brings a wealth of experience and is still one of the quickest on the grid, despite his age.
      But Alonso does have the potential to upset teams, especially when things are not going well.
      His second spell at McLaren – when they were hamstrung by their Honda engine – was excruciating and he publicly taunted the team for their poor performances.
      The disintegration of that relationship (again) was staggering as he drove a wedge between the Japanese company and McLaren as the team environment went toxic.
      That’s something Aston cannot afford to happen – no matter how much money Stroll throws at the project in the form of recruitment and their new multi-million pound factory.
      Because, as we have seen in the past, having money doesn’t guarantee success.
      The biggest reminder is when Toyota announced in 1999 that it would be coming into the sport and the assumption was that, given the Japanese car giant’s resources, they were assured of victories.
      But despite three poles in 139 GPs, Toyota never won a single race between 2002 and 2009, let alone challenge for the title, as is Stroll’s ambition.
      For the meantime, he is committed but should Alonso’s move backfire, then it could add up to another costly mistake.

      Oscar nominated
      Alonso’s exit at Alpine will open up a space for Australian driver Oscar Piastri, which is good news for F1 because he is excellent.
      Piastri won the Formula Renault title in 2019, Formula Three in 2020 and the Formula Two title in 2021.
      Barmy rules meant he had to leave F2 as the champ and with no space on the grid he was forced to wait his time.
      But now it has come and Alpine should grab it.

      Schmitz and giggles
      WE are now safely in the era of Max Verstappen’s domination following his excellent victory in Budapest, which means he has an 80-point lead in the championship.
      We are seeing the same level as Vettel at Red Bull in 2013 when he went into the second half of the season and won nine races in a row.
      However, away from the TV cameras, while Verstappen’s performance at the Hungaroring was excellent – it was not a patch on that by his strategist, Hannah Schmitz.
      She absolutely aced the timing of his pit stops to perfection and nailed the tyre choice as Ferrari faltered and Mercedes played catch up.
      While the joke memes flooded Twitter portraying Ferrari’s strategists as clowns, Red Bull have an absolute gem in Schmitz, their Principle Strategy Engineer.

      O-ver the top
      VERSTAPPEN has slammed idiots who burned Mercedes merchandise at the Hungarian GP.
      A video circulated on social media showing a £45 black cap being set on fire as the bad-blood surrounding some of his supporters continues.
      The Dutchman was asked about it after the race and he said: “That’s of course not acceptable. These individuals, I definitely don’t agree with that, because that’s just disgusting.
      “Overall, I think the majority of the fans were cheering throughout the race, and also on the podium, for every driver. That’s how it should be, but that video of burning merch, I think that’s disgusting.”

      Fab grab
      MOTOGP star Fabio Quartararo is trying to secure an F1 test later in the year.
      The MotoGP champion was at the French GP and spent time with Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team in the hope of getting something finalised.
      It is not the first time a rider has tried his luck on four wheels.
      Valentino Rossi often flirted with F1 and tested for Ferrari a number of times between 2004 and 2010.

      SILVERSTONE chiefs are working with police to ensure there is not a repeat of the protests that marred the British F1 GP at this weekend’s MotoGP race.
      Environmental campaigners breached the fences and made their way onto the track in a dangerous sit-down protest.
      And now track bosses and local police are switching their attention to this weekend’s MotoGP race to ensure it runs smoothly.
      Aussie elation

      They beat Great Britain – who won the crown last year – with Aussies Jack Holder and Max Fricke beating Brit stars Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley in the final.
      GB’s three-times world champion Tai Woffinden was unable to race in Saturday’s meeting after suffering a back injury in a training accident.

      LEWIS HAMILTON has warned championship leader Max Verstappen he will be back to fighting for race victories after the summer break.The seven-time World Champion finished second behind the Dutchman at Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

      Verstappen produced a magnificent drive to win the race from 10th thanks in part to another Ferrari strategy mishap.
      But Hamilton, who also finished the race with the fastest lap, vowed to be back fighting the championship front-runners on the other side of the summer break.
      He told Sky Sports after the race: “I was definitely struggling at the beginning but bit by bit I got more comfortable with the balance.

      F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Verstappen WINS with Lewis Hamilton in SECOND in thriller – reaction

      DUTCH ace Max Verstappen performed the drive of the 2022 season after winning the Hungarian Grand Prix after starting tenth.And there was double joy for Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both finishing on the podium.
      Red Bull driver Verstappen has extended his Championship lead to 80 points with his nearest rival Charles Leclerc coming home in sixth.
      It was a disappointing performance from the Ferrari man who had been leading the race.
      His team-mate Carlos Sainz finished in fourth, with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in fifth.

      Ferrari left speaking double Dutch
      In the post-race interviews the Ferrari team spoke about how they need to analyse the race and look at where they need to improve.
      Partly they claimed that the choices were made to give their drivers the chance of lapping faster times but Leclerc was already doing that before his pit stop.
      The changing to hard tyres really cost the Frenchman and left him languishing in sixth place at the end of the race.
      Tactics cost Ferrari dear yet again
      Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc will feel as though they have been let down today by their teams.
      Some of the choices made were very questionable and obviously cost them as they finished fourth and sixth respectively.
      The post-race interview with Carlos really showed how unhappy he was with some of the decisions made in Hungary today.
      Verstappen with enviable lead in championship
      You have to question whether Max Verstappen has things already sewn up in terms of the F1 season.
      After today’s win, the Dutch driver could afford three DNF’s and still be top of the 2022 F1 standings.
      It would be a huge ask of anyone to catch him now.

      When he lined up on 10th place on the starting grid, it seemed that even for Max Verstappen it could be too much of an ask to win this race today.
      If you told him he would also spin out on the track, even he would have questioned how high his finishing position would be.

      Controlling his car when it spun around 360 degrees, to continue and go onto to win the race, this was very well deserved.

      The rain is starting to come down right now as Verstappen tries to tip-toe around the track on the last lap.
      Hamilton has reduced the gap to under 8.5 seconds now.
      If there was more than half a lap left, this would be a worrying time for Verstappen but his hard work seems to have got him the win.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 69
      Bottas is forced to retire as his car comes to a stop just off the track.
      Virtual safety car is in place now.
      This adds another element to the race as it will extend the length of the race significantly and brings in the potential of seeing some rain.
      Red Bull will need to consider their tactics to ensure Verstappen’s victory here.

      As we predicted Hamilton’s endeavours have taken some real toll on those tyres and Verstappen seems to have Hamilton covered.
      He is currently 10.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton in second.
      What a win this would be from tenth place on the grid.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 65
      Hamilton takes over Russell on turn one.
      Mercedes have second and third place as we stand.
      If we were to see any rain now, it would probably be Hamilton’s only chance to challenge Verstappen on medium tyres.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 63
      Lewis Hamilton overtakes Carlos Sainz.
      Mercedes have the chance to allow Hamilton to swap places with George Russell but they will be worried about allowing Sainz to sneak in ahead of Russell also.
      It may be one step too far for Hamilton to challenge Verstappen as those tyres will have deteriorated considerably by then.
      No team orders for Russell just yet.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 61
      Lewis Hamilton continues to put in quick lap times with the soft tyres and lighter car with less fuel on board.
      He is flying around the track and catching up with the front three.
      Verstappen continues to hold onto first place ahead of George Russell in second place.
      We are into the last 10 laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

      We are waiting for the moment where Hamilton manages to take Carlos Sainz and Russell is asked to step aside for him.
      Hamilton is putting in some seriously fast laps since his pit.
      Verstappen needs to manage those tyres well to win this race.

      Lewis Hamilton has put in the fastest lap of the day as he tries to catch Carlos Sainz in third place.
      He is immediately beaten to that accolade by Russell and then beats his British compatriot’s time with his next lap.

      Russell is really putting some pressure on Leclerc for the podium places on his medium compound tyre.

      Hamilton will have to pit again as he has gone medium/medium on the tyre front so far.
      He is currently 6.6 seconds ahead of Verstappen in second place.

      Verstappen moves into third place behind Lewis Hamilton.
      Carlos Sainz leads the race but surely both he and Hamilton will have to pit again.
      Leclerc seems to be struggling in the hard compound tyre.
      He may find himself under pressure from George Russell now.

      Max Verstappen sets the fastest lap of the day as he puts some pressure on Leclerc.
      The Dutch driver has done brilliantly to get back into this position after that spin.
      Whether there is any damage to them that may hinder him later in the race, only time will tell.

      Sainz leads the race with Lewis Hamilton in second place.
      Leclerc is in third, Verstappen in fourth who had a mini spin on the corner.
      He did well to keep control and recover but it has allowed Leclerc time to warm up those tyres.

      Big news as both Leclerc and Russell decide to pit.
      More interestingly, with the Alpines struggling on the hard tyres, Ferrari have decided to ignore this and get Leclerc onto the hard compound tyres.
      Meanwhile, George Russell sticks with the medium tyres.
      Leclerc is struggling on the hard tyres already and is unable to get passed Max Verstappen.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 39
      Lando Norris is the first driver to report that the course is getting very slippy.
      This could make for a very interesting race.
      Verstappen decides it is time to pit himself for the final time, which will put him behind Hamilton and Perez.
      Hungarian Grand Prix: Lap 37
      With Verstappen in fourth place, this could be a huge race to win for Leclerc when it comes to the driver’s championship.
      A few cars are coming off the course now, making us wonder whether the few spots of rain are making sections of the course greasy.

      His devoted wife Corinna and their children – F1 racer Mick and keen equestrian Gina-Maria’s – are all also reportedly expected to spend time at their new property, reports German magazine Die Bunte.
      It has been widely reported the family were planning to relocate to the sun soaked island, and they have been repeatedly linked to the plush pile near the ritzy town of Port Andratx.
      Corinna is said to have “big plans” for the family in Spain, including suggestions they will be setting up a horse ranch near their new home.
      Schumacher himself is reported to have made visits to the property by helicopter and spent time there.

      And it comes as the ongoing mystery swirls around Michael’s health, with the legendary F1 driver not seen or heard from in nine years since a horrific ski crash.

      Just as previously reportedly, it is claimed the family have purchased Villa Yasmin, which was once owned by Real Madrid boss Florentino Pérez.
      The huge property features two swimming pools, a large garden, a helipad, a guest villa and stunning sea views.
      And it is previously been reported the villa will be kitted out with the relevant medical equipment needed for Michael.
      It has also been reported the Schumachers have purchased the expansive plot of land, which is currently full of dilapidated buildings and almond trees.
      The plot reportedly cost them £2.3million and is described as an “absolute rarity in the region of south-west Majorca” due to how close it is to the sea.
      The Schumacher family are said to have previously enjoyed life on the island – and Die Bunte claims it is a favourite destination among Schuey’s F1 pals.
      Michael is said to have in the past visited his manager Willi Weber there – with his villa being just a 10 minute driver from their new estate.
      ‘BIG PLANS’
      Other F1 stars with ties to Majorca include German star Nico Hulkenberg, who got married on the island last month, and current Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who also makes regular visits.
      British F1 world champion Nigel Mansell also once lived on the island in a luxurious property on a private estate.
      Die Bunte also reports that Gina-Maria and Mick both enjoy jet-skiing around the bay in the waters off the Balearic Island.
      Corinna is thought to have major ideas for their new home – including setting up their new plot of land to be a horse ranch.
      She wants to make sure Michael has the “best medical care” and is with the family “as much as possible”.

      The family already have horses in Texas and at their home in Switzerland.
      She could seek to breed horses and sell them on the land – potentially even hosting competitions in Majorca.
      The land they have bought is reportedly designated as an agricultural area, meaning there should be no problems in building stables and setting up meadows.
      Reports of the Schumacher family ties to Majorca have emerged multiple times in the last four years – including reports they were planning to buy the plot land dating back to May 2021.
      The plot was reported at the time to have been to “raise and ride horses on”.
      Schumacher’s daughter is a non-professional horse rider and equestrian while Corinna won the European Championship in western-style horse riding in 2010.
      Gina-Maria’s boyfriend, Iain Bethke, is also a show jumper.
      Horses are a key part of the Schumacher family, with Michael himself also enjoying riding and taking part in rodeos.
      It was reported last year that Corinna was selling the family’s £6.4million mansion on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
      The family initially denied plans in 2018 they were going to move into the plush villa, but reports have persisted – including claims neighbours saw them at the property in 2019.
      And the mayor also claimed the family had moved in.
      Schumacher, 53, suffered a horrific head injury while skiing with his son Mick in December 2013 – just one year after his retirement from F1.
      And ever since, mystery has loomed over his health – with only a slow trickle of information being fed out by the family and his team.

      No one outside of Schumacher’s inner circle – which has Corinna at its heart – really knows what is happening with Michael.
      Schumacher’s former manager of 20 years – Willi Weber – has fiercely raged about the lack of information as he accused the family of hiding the truth.
      The 80-year-old said he’s still “angry” at the Schumachers for not updating him on the F1 icon’s health.
      He said he initially understood the need for secrecy from the Schumacher family but that since he got out of hospital, “we have only heard lies from them”.
      “They kept me out, telling me it’s too early, well now it’s too late. It’s been nine years. Maybe they should just say it the way it is,” Weber told La Gazetta dello Sport.
      The lack of official updates has left room for speculation and conflicting reports from “insiders” about his slow progress.
      Some have claimed he was in a vegetative state while others claimed he was awake and able to talk.
      Schumacher’s pal ex-F1 boss Jean Todt – who is understood be one of few friends who goes to see the stricken driver – last week gave a rare update.
      The 74-year-old told German TV channel RTL: “I don’t miss Michael, I see him. Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael.
      “But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.”
      The former Ferrari chief previously told how he “hopes the world” will be able to see his dear friend again, revealing Schumacher has “never changed”.
      He continued: “I don’t leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we’ve had so many experiences together.
      “The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.
      “Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He’s so strong.”
      The F1 legend was a seven-time-world champion – winning five times for Ferrari and twice for Benetton – and is regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
      He raced from 1991 to 2006, and again from 2010 to 2012, winning 91 races.
