And after overtaking Lewis Hamilton late on to claim victory at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, Verstappen, along with team principal Christian Horner paid homage to their late boss.
As he crossed the line Horner said over the radio: “Max Verstappen, you are world champion, we are world champions.
“Thank you so much, and thank you Dietrich Mateschitz for everything you have done.”
The Dutchman had already claimed the F1 driver’s title thanks to victory around Suzuka in the Japanese Grand Prix, but his win on Sunday also sealed the constructor’s title for Red Bull.

He then replied: “This one was for Dietrich. I gave it everything out there, even though we had that stop but uh… I just keep pushing and congrats guys.
“What an amazing season winning also the constructors, you guys really deserve it.”
While Verstappen has now made it back-to-back titles, for the team it represents their first title since 2013.
The Red Bull portfolio also notably expands into football, with German club RB Leipzig and Austrian sister team RB Salzburg.

Discussions around the controversial cost cap breach by Red Bull Racing – following the conclusion of the 2021 season’s financial audit – have been put on hold following Mateschitz’s death.
Red Bull confirmed: “Following the passing of Mr Mateschitz, all conversations with the FIA around Cost Cap and next steps are on hold until further notice.
“The deadline for agreement has been extended and we expect talks to pick back up (in the) middle of the week.” More

Lewis Hamilton apologises for not winning US Grand Prix after heartbreaking late overtake by rival Max Verstappen

LEWIS HAMILTON has apologised for not winning the US Grand Prix after he was overtaken by Max Verstappen. A nailbiting finale saw the Dutch champion pass his old title rival with six laps to go.
It’s been a frustrating season for Mercedes driver Lewis HamiltonCredit: Rex
Hamilton had looked set for his first win of the season after keeping pace with Verstappen and then pouncing into the lead after the Red Bull driver had a slow pitstop.
But the seven-times world champion fell just short and struggled to hide his disappointment in his post-race interview.
He told Sky Sports: “Sorry I couldn’t get the win, I gave it absolutely everything.
“I mean I don’t know, I can’t put in words how much it would mean to the team.

“Especially with everything that’s going on, everything that’s happened in the last race last year.
“Then what’s what’s happened this year in terms of our performance, and then what’s happened with all the news and everything, so I mean to get a win would be a huge triumph for us all and hugely rewarding.”
Hamilton has three races left to try and nab his first win and keep up his extraordinary record of being victorious in each F1 season he has competed in.
The Brit has won at least one race on the calendar since his debut in 2007 and will look to claim victory in Mexico, Brazil or Abu Dhabi.

But he is not optimistic about his chances.
It’s been a frustrating season for the driver with Mercedes failing to adapt to the drastic rule changes in the sport.
But after the issues in the opening races, the German manufacturer has looked far more competitive with Hamilton and George Russell raking in podiums.
But race wins have proven to be just beyond the capabilities of the car with Verstappen taking 13 victories.
It equals the record held by Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull and Michael Schumacher for Ferrari for most wins in a season. More

The pre-race grid walk was axed when Covid was raging across Europe but returned last year to the delight of fans.
But Brad Pitt appeared to not be in the mood to chat as he ignored Brundle’s attempts to start conversation.
Pitt – who is staring in a F1-themed movie – rebuffed the pundit’s questions before turning around and giving a brief answer after Brundle asks about the film.
He said he cannot give any information about it yet as it was “top secret.”

When Brundle then tries to ask him about his enjoyment of F1, the famous actor palms him off with a dismissive “thank you, man.”
The awkward encounter was similar to Brundle’s last trip to Austin when he memorably clashed with the security detail around American rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
His iconic grid walk also saw him make a hilarious blunder as he mixed up his American sport stars during a trip to the inaugural Miami Grand Prix earlier this year.
Fans were left unhappy with Pitt’s attitude.

One wrote on Twitter: “Brad Pitt, you’re doing a movie on F1 and don’t know who Martin Brundle is? It’s *the* grid walk. Stop and talk to him.”
Another said: “Not sure I understand the logic of Brad Pitt not wanting to spend just a moment to talk to Martin Brundle during the grid walk.
“I mean, this is his moment to connect with those F1 fans that would see his F1 movie.”
Unlike Pitt, music star Ed Sheeran did stop to have a chat with Brundle.
The grid walk preceded an action-packed Texas race as Lewis Hamilton came within six laps of his first win of the season.
But he was pipped in the closing stages by his old title rival Max Verstappen who had to fight his way back to the front after a botched pit stop.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel continued to end his F1 career on a high as he briefly lead the race until a dodgy pit stop of his own.
The German fan favourite then had to fight his way back into the points – and pulled off a brilliant last lap overtake on the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
The race also had two safety car periods with one being triggered after a dramatic crash between Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. More

Hamilton vs Schumacher: Wet weather, coping with pressure & consistency – who’s the GOAT?

LEWIS HAMILTON broke Michael Schumacher’s win record on his way to a seventh world title in 2020.The British star, 37, matched the German’s number of world championship titles as well.

Hamilton also surpassed Schumacher’s record for the most podiums and pole positions.
But which of the two F1 legends is the greatest?
Sadly, the two only competed against each other for three seasons in F1 when Schumacher came out of retirement to drive for Mercedes, who were then uncompetitive.
SunSport breaks down the drivers’ skills into five categories to establish who is F1’s No1.
    WORK-RATE
    Hamilton
The Mercedes man gets a fair chunk of stick for his jet-setting ways and there is a feeling he doesn’t do his homework in the same way as other drivers do.
Wrong. He does and has his notebook that he carries with him that he uses to provide feedback to his engineers.

When Schumacher joined Ferrari he was already well-known for his attention to detail, but after signing for the Italian team he cranked it up to a new level.
Yes, Ferrari did surround him with the best people and a defacto No2 driver, but Schumacher’s work-rate was next level.

    OVER A SINGLE LAP
    Hamilton
In F1, there is a term that is frequently used that is along the lines of “being able to extract the most from the package”.
To everyone else, that means going as quick as you can… and the best measurement of that is in qualifying.
Hamilton is untouchable over one flying lap, his performances, especially for Mercedes, on a Saturday are mesmerising.
    Score: 10
    Schumacher
While Schumacher achieved an impressive 68 poles during his F1 career, Hamilton currently sits on 97, and having reached that number on 44 fewer races.
Make no mistake, Schumacher was quick, but Hamilton easily edges this one.
The argument of who had the better car also goes out of the window.

    DRIVING IN THE WET
    Hamilton
Whenever it rains, Hamilton is the favourite.
Since his impressive performance in the wet at Silverstone in 2008 to his bravery in qualifying for this year’s Styrian GP, he always seems to keep it on the black stuff, whatever the weather.
This year’s pole in Austria was particularly impressive, with his Merc boss Toto Wolff hailing the performance as “not from this world”.
    Score: 10
    Schumacher
Like Hamilton, the German has a reputation for being an excellent wet weather driver.
One race that stands out is the 1995 Belgian GP where he stayed on slicks while most of the other cars pitted for wets.
Despite being slower, Schumacher held off Damon Hill to win the race.

    CALM UNDER PRESSURE
    Hamilton
With team radio now regularly played out on TV, fans get an insight into life in the drivers’ cockpits.
For the best part, Hamilton’s comments on tyres are interesting for those studying the lap times.
But while he sometimes sounds flustered, it’s worth remembering he’s travelling at 200mph and pulling G-forces of 5G.
Whatever he says to his team, Hamilton keeps things clean on track and does not resort to dirty tricks.
    Score: 10
    Schumacher
Without the radio exchanges from Schuamcher’s era, it is difficult to make a direct comparison between their attitudes in the heat of battle.
But there is a clear winner when it comes to gentlemanly conduct when handling the pressure.
Time and again, Schumacher was at the centre of a foul play storm, be it blocking, dangerous moves or even inexplicably stopping on track to halt a qualifying session.

    CONSISTENCY
    Hamilton
Ah, the old argument about having the best car.
The best car of the season is always defined by who won the title that year.
The best drivers get to drive the best cars.
Currently, the Mercedes is the best car and Hamilton’s consistency there has been staggering.
He’s won 70 of the last 132 GPs.
    Score: 10

Schuamcher’s 13 wins out of 18 in his title-winning 2004 season is the standout, yet that level of dominance is similar to Hamilton’s eight wins in 12 for this season.
But when you look at Schumacher’s stats, the results are punctuated by retirements – something Hamilton rarely does.
In fact, Hamilton’s last retirement from a race was over two years ago.

Hamilton is still looking for his first win of the season after Verstappen managed to recover from a dodgy pit stop to get one over his old title rival.
But the Mercedes driver remained in good spirits after the competitive showing from his team.
He wrote on Instagram: “P2! Some tough racing out there, it wasn’t easy but we are taking away a good result.
“Thank you to the team for all the hard work this weekend strategy, pit stops, all of it was on point.

“This outcome is a huge boost for us all, and we are ultimately leaving with some valuable learnings for next year.”
Hamilton remained in contention for the entire race and two mid-race safety cars helped him keep close to his Dutch rival.
An early second pit stop helped him get past Verstappen, with the Red Bull driver having to endure a poor 11-second stop of his own.
Hamilton then went into the lead after passing Sebastian Vettel who had an incredible race in his Aston Martin.

And the Brit had praise for Vettel, who is retiring from F1 at the end of the season after 15 years.
Hamilton added in his Instagram post: “Always fun to battle @sebastianvettel – let’s keep this momentum going for Mexico, see you all next week.”
Ultimately it would be Verstappen who would prevail for the second year in a row at Austin.

Hamilton pushed him to the wire and crossed the line five second behind the Dutchman meaning his barren run, which stretches back to last November, goes on.
The seven-time world champion also came close to winning in Holland, while he was second in France and Hungary, but feels a win is beyond him given Red Bull’s pace.

“It felt for a second that I might be able to hold on to it, but the medium tyre was too strong.”

When asked if he could win this season, he added: “We need to be realistic. The Red Bull car has been the fastest car all year and it is still the fastest car.
“We were in the position we were in due to reliability. If Charles Leclerc or Sergio Perez were there, they would have been ahead of us.
“It was great starting third and being in a position to fight, but in true pace they were ahead of us and will be in the next three races.

“Max had an 11 second stop and [came out behind] Charles, so get past him and then pass me and get ahead, shows some real speed.”
Hamilton and Verstappen played out a thrilling final six laps, as both struggled to remain inside the while lines as they battled for position.
But it was Verstappen who crossed the line first, helping Red Bull to an emotional victory following the death of the energy drink’s co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz.
There were no black armbands. Instead, Red Bull’s staff wore blue jeans, as was the billionaire’s preference.
There was a one-minute applause as teams paid their respects before the race and a message “Danke Didi” was displayed on the screen.
Verstappen added: “It’s a very difficult weekend for us and this one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich himself for what he has done for everyone.
“We had a big chance to win the constructors here and of course you want to do that in style and I think we did that.

“It definitely means a lot to me, to the team, because he was so instrumental to the whole team, it will all continue but we of course wanted to have a good result today.”
A record crowd of 440,000 over the weekend reaffirmed F1’s popularity boom in the United States.
And they were treated to a first-lap smash as Verstappen was catapulted into the lead when pole-sitter Carlos Sainz was spun off by George Russell.
And there were more fireworks when Fernando Alonso clipped Lance Stroll and was launched into the air at 200mph, causing his Alpine to do a wheelie.
Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris both had narrow escapes as they missed the wreckage, while Alonso somehow finished the race in seventh.
But after the race the Spaniard was hit with a 30-second time penalty after his damaged car was deemed unsafe by stewards. He is now classified as finishing 15th.
Once the mess from the crash was cleared up and the race restarted on lap 26, Verstappen kept ahead of Hamilton but for the first time in ages, the Mercedes man was able to keep up.
On lap 35, the Brit pitted for fresh tyres in what was a seamless synchronised stop for his Mercedes team.
Red Bull responded by calling in Verstappen a lap later but a problem with the front left wheel resulted in a slow 11.1 second pitstop.
The delay left Verstappen furious – “beautiful, f****** beautiful!” he shouted over the radio as he was leapfrogged in the pecking order by Hamilton and Leclerc.
Verstappen returned to the track in sixth but slowly chipped away at Hamilton’s lead, catching him with six laps to go.
He made his move at Turn 12, the two came incredibly close to banging wheels but he got the move done.
But there was still drama as both were warned about exceeding the track limits, triggering potential penalties. Yet Hamilton did not have to pace to mount a fightback. More

Watch Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll collide in horror 180mph crash as car rears on two wheels at US Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso’s front tyres were sent into the air
    This was Alonso’s terrifying view
As he did so he made contact with Stroll’s rear, sending the Canadian spinning and ending his race.
Alonso’s Alpine, meanwhile, nearly propelled into the air, its front two wheels airborne as the Spaniard wrestled for control of his car as it did a wheelie down the track.
Luckily his rear wheels remained on the track and he was somehow able to continue the race.
Following Alonso’s initial seventh place finish, he and Stroll were called into the steward’s office to review the incident – with the latter deemed to be at fault.

The 23-year-old was subsequently slapped with a three-place grid drop for the Mexican Grand Prix next week, after what Alonso described as a “very late move”.
Stroll has also received two penalty points on his license.
After the race, he said: “I looked at it. I mean, first of all, I think it’s a shame, we were having a good race. I left him plenty of room on the left.
“It was a big difference in speed. I was kind of judging where he was behind me and I moved based on where I thought he was behind me.

“But he got really close to me and we just made contact, so [it’s] frustrating.”
Meanwhile, Alonso said: “Five minutes ago, I was fine, now I’m in a little bit of pain, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow probably to really see.
“But the car is very strong again. Whoever has a problem with Alpine normally has everything to lose!
“We have a very strong car and we changed tyres, the front wing, and kept going.
It was scary in the car, because when you are up in the air, anything can happenFernando Alonso
“It was amazing that the car managed to complete the 31 laps until the end and we still finished P7 after being P17, so it was a good race.
“It was scary in the car, because when you are up in the air, anything can happen. When I saw that I landed on the track, I said, ‘Okay, I will retire the car now and that’s it for today.’ But no, change tyres, front wing – go!”
After the race, Alonso’s P7 finish was downgraded to P15 after he received a 30-second penalty when it was deemed that his car had been “sent back out on track in an unsafe condition.”
Later in the race, his wing mirror fell off as his battered car struggled to remain in one piece.
