Max Verstappen WINS third consecutive F1 title without even driving in Grand Prix in historic first

FOR once he didn’t win, but Max Verstappen’s second-place finish in the Qatar GP sprint race was enough to clinch him the F1 title. In what has felt like the longest procession in F1 history, finally the Red Bull ace has his third world crown – and there are still SIX races to go.

F1 have introduced these 30-minute sprint races to liven up the action, strategically placing three of them towards the end of the year in the hope of prolonging a title fight.
But there was not a chance of taking this championship to the wire – especially with Sergio Perez’s intent on making life difficult for himself.
The Mexican is under mounting pressure to justify his place in the team after a number of poor performances.
He’s been openly criticised by Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko on repeated occasions.

And he did himself no favours here after a poor qualifying and getting taken out of the sprint race by Esteban Ocon.
With Perez eliminated, Verstappen was crowned world champion before the race had even ended.
Verstappen started third and made a conservative start as he plotted his way through the early laps.
He mounted a late charge, passing George Russell to move into second place but ultimately yielded to Oscar Piastri, who won for McLaren.

It was a measured performance from Verstappen, who has enjoyed a season of domination at an unprecedented level.
He’d re-written the record books by winning 10 races in a row – ironically beating former Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel who set it in 2013 when all the other teams had stopped developing their cars.
Verstappen, still only 26, has been unstoppable with 13 wins in 16 races – no wonder then, even before this Saturday sprint race, he was relaxed about the prospect of being crowned three-time world champion.
Clearly not one for superstition, he spoke about still having plans to celebrate his title win, despite still having Sunday’s Qatar GP to come.
This championship has looked inevitable as soon as Perez’s limp chance of challenging him wilted as easy as the Miami GP only the fifth race of the season.
As he crossed the line he was congratulated by team boss Christian Horner, who said: “Max you are a three-time world champion. That’s unbelievable. Incredible year for you.”
Verstappen replied: “Yeah unbelievable guys. I don’t know what to say. Thank you for providing me with such a car. It’s been a lot of fun this year.
“I just want to say a big thank you to everyone here at the track and back at the factory, putting all the effort in.
It’s Verstappen’s third title on the spinCredit: Reuters
“To be able to achieve something like this, I can’t thank you all enough. Besides all the performance related stuff, it’s just really enjoyable to work with you all. That’s the most important thing at the end.”
Piastri produced an excellent drive for his first win in F1 while his McLaren teammate Lando Norris was third. Russell was fourth and Lewis Hamilton was fifth.
Meanwhile, F1 chiefs will discover today (SUN) if they can run the Qatar Grand Prix as intended or force teams to make extra pitstops on safety grounds.
The sport’s governing body, the FIA, are worried about some of the new kerbs at the Lusail International Circuit causing damage to their tyres.
The problem was highlighted by tyre suppliers Pirelli at 10:30pm on Friday night, who investigated the sets of tyres used by the drivers in the solitary practice session and qualifying on Friday night.
However, despite informing the FIA, teams were not told about the risks until 14 HOURS later, sparking outrage among the drivers, who requested an urgent meeting.

They were reassured by F1 but pending further investigations, the FIA could stipulate THREE pitstops to prevent blowouts.
Somewhat incredibly, the international sporting event has not had a single pilot event with an F1 car while there are zero additional races on the schedule – unlike other races on the F1 calendar. More

However, despite informing the FIA, teams were not told about the risks until 14 HOURS later, sparking outrage among the drivers, who requested an urgent meeting.
They have been reassured by F1 that the tyres were at least safe for the 30-minute sprint race but the FIA have registered extra running time to investigate further.
It could result in the FIA stipulating that during Sunday’s race, drivers are forced to stop THREE times for new tyres to limit the chances of a blow out due to cuts in the tyre wall.

It comes after a substantial development of the track to signal the start of the 10-year deal Qatar has signed with F1.
However, somewhat incredibly, the international sporting event has not had a single pilot event with an F1 car.

The first time an F1 car went around the circuit since the resurfacing was on Friday, sparking a debate as to how safe the circuit is.
While this is not the first time this track has held an F1 race – it hosted the 2021 Qatar GP – questions are being asked of the FIA and F1.

Not only have there been no test events, there are zero additional races on the schedule – unlike other races on the F1 calendar.

But Piastri was then bumped up to P3 after team-mate Lando Norris – who had put himself in P2 – saw his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits.
A jubilant Piastri had taken up the microphone for the interviews the top three drivers do after qualifying and a race, seemingly confirming his place in the order.
However, the Aussie soon found himself falling foul to the same treatment as his team-mate.
While in the middle of his interview, Piastri was told his lap time had been deleted, cruelly swiping a top three away.

Piastri, 22, was then told he would now be starting P6, putting his thumbs up before sarcastically remarking “wonderful,” and heading off screen.
Fans could not help but feel sorry for the rookie, who scored his first-ever F1 podium at the most recent race in Japan.
One said: “That was so brutal omg.”
A second commented: “The dejected thumbs up too 😫😭.”

Another typed: “He said ‘I’ll try again next time’. He’s so cool.”
While a fifth added: “I would actually start sobbing.”
Despite the disappointment, Piastri provided a brilliant response on his Twitter page, sharing a pic of himself alongside pole sitter Max Verstappen and P2 George Russell with the caption: “P1, 2 & 6 🤷‍♂️.”
Piastri also told Sky Sports F1: “Obviously it’s a shame.
“The car felt reasonable, I just pushed the limit of the car in the last lap. It’s a shame because the car was quick.
“We get another crack at it tomorrow with qualifying and then the Sprint too. We’ll see what we can do.
“I think it’s very tight and it’s so easy to make mistakes. The track’s very slippery so that’s not making things easy for us.
“We’ll try again, obviously it’s a shame that we’re a bit further back down for the main race where the most points are but there’s definitely points up for grabs tomorrow.”
Verstappen can make history by winning the F1 driver’s title BEFORE the full race on Sunday.
Russell joins him on the front row, with Hamilton in third.

The 24-year-old had already faced questions about his future in F1, with rumours rife that he was getting fed up with the sport.
Petulant Stroll stropped and appeared to push his osteopath and performance coach, Henry Howe, into a plastic wall at the rear of the team’s garage after qualifying for the Qatar GP.
He then swore in a TV interview, uttering a total of seven words when faced with three questions about his latest horror show.
Firstly asked what his emotions were, Stroll said: “Yeah s***.”

The interviewer apologised for the language and quizzed him on what he thought was not clicking behind the wheel.
Stroll provided another blunt answer with: “I don’t know.”
He was then asked how the mindset would change for the weekend, abruptly replying: “Keep driving,” before storming off.
Stroll has been a total disappointment this season, scoring just 47 of the team’s 221 points.

He has failed to be on the podium while team-mate Fernando Alonso has been on seven occasions.
Stroll’s P17 qualifying result at the Losail Circuit in Doha is the latest in a string of poor pre-race performances.
His latest showing means he has now failed to get his car above P10 in each of the last seven races.
In contrast, Alonso will start in P4 after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri saw their lap times deleted to plummet them down the grid to P10 and P6 respectively for Sunday’s race.
Max Verstappen, who can win the drivers championship in tomorrow’s sprint race, scored pole and is joined on the front row of the grid by Mercedes star George Russell.
Lewis Hamilton is sharing the second row with old nemesis Alonso after coming in third.

Now the car is going up for sale under auctioneers RM Sotheby’s at the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix.
It is the first Hamilton-driven Mercedes F1 car to be offered for public sale.
However, to buy the car fans will need to reach very deep into their pockets.

“This pairing can only be compared to Jordan and the Bulls, Brady and the Patriots, or Messi and Argentina.
“Given the unparalleled lineage and being the sole example outside of Mercedes’ origination publicly available, the pairing of Lewis and the W04 elevates it beyond just a Formula 1 car.
“This undeniable piece could emerge as one of the most coveted collectables in the foreseeable future.”
Hamilton has won 82 races with Mercedes and won 21 with former employer McLaren to take his total to a record 103 wins.
He is back in action at the Qatar Grand Prix this weekend as he remains in the hunt for a first race victory since 2021.
That did not stop the Brit from signing a new bumper £100m-a-year contract at the team for the next two years.
Championship leader Max Verstappen could win the drivers title this weekend after Red Bull won the constructors at the Japanese GP.

Lewis Hamilton CONFIRMS talks with Ferrari over shock F1 move and reveals how close he came to Mercedes exit

LEWIS HAMILTON has spoken about his discussions with Ferrari over what would have been a shock move away from Mercedes. The seven-time world champion had been linked with a switch to The Pancing Horse before he put pen to paper on a new two-year deal with Mercedes.

Hamilton is earning an eye-watering £50m per year in his fresh terms with the Silver Arrows and the deal came after persistent rumours of a £40m contract at Ferrari.
But the Englishman has now confirmed that the Italian’s offer never arrived and all talks were purely informal.
When asked by Swiss outlet Blick if he was ever offered a contract, he said: “Never. Okay, we’ve definitely had a few irrelevant conversations.
“I know a lot of good people there. But I never felt ready to move to Italy.”

Hamilton had previously described a move to Ferrari as a “dream position” back in 2021, but obviously didn’t come as close as many thought to seeing it materialise this summer.
There has been mounting pressure on the 38-year-old to move away from Mercedes after the team have fallen too far behind Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

Former F1 star Johnny Herbert even said he thought that Hamilton would be the perfect fit for Ferrari and should have made the move to secure an elusive eighth world title.
Speaking to The Mirror, he explained: “He may be aware of what may be happening in the future with Mercedes and has been satisfied that is where his future is.

“Still, I would have liked to have seen the final part of his career in a Ferrari. I honestly think he was the right character and the perfect fit for them.
“If he is happy where he is, for him, that is the best mental place for him to be. You have got to have belief in where you are at and Lewis does, which is why he re-signed.
“Based on the last couple of years, I don’t see Lewis getting an eighth title.
“The car has got better since they changed from the original concept, but they are only as good as the gap behind Red Bull.”

Inside creepy abandoned speedway track with vintage cars sat gathering rust after nature took over following flood

LAYING dormant in rural Minnesota is a flooded former race track that has a fascinating backstory.A testament to the perseverance of the locals throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Wee Town Outlaw Speedway defied nature for the best part of three decades before nature reclaimed the land.

Located almost a three-hour drive from Minneapolis, the track opened in 1962 as the Lake Region Speedway, it originally operated annually from May until Labor Day weekend, as per the Fergus Falls Journal.
The stock car track was a popular destination for locals until 1969 when it experienced its first closure.
Reopened in 1976 as the West Central Speedway the site continued to operate until 1986 when nature thought otherwise.
High water thanks to the neighboring lake began to take hold of the track, forcing it to close its doors once more until 1990.

Don Eggen, the former co-owner of the facility said in 2007: “We had our last season in 1993, and it was a sad day when things shut down for good.
“Simply put, we just had too much water to deal with. Little did we know at the time that water levels would get much worse. It’s hard to believe what one sees today.”
In the years since its closure, the wooden bleachers have been reclaimed by the undergrowth.
Much of the main straight is still visible, covered in grass and trees while parts of the concrete barriers also seemingly remain, however, the majority of the rest of the oval is underwater.

And while the facility could easily be missed by those not in the know, there are one of two telling signs of its history.
The lights and power cords still appear to circle the track, while the occasional tire pile can be spotted amongst the plant life and water.
Then there is the rusting truck partially underwater in the infield.
As for the locals, they are left with happy memories of Sunday nights under the bright lights.
“Looking back, I appreciate not only the stock car drivers but also the family members and fans who supported us — and stock car racing in general — for so many years,” said Eggen.
“It was great to see such good turnouts, especially Sunday evenings under the lights.”
