John Ryder plots one of boxing’s biggest EVER shocks vs Canelo and become only second Brit to win world title in Mexico

JOHN RYDER is dreaming of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history. The 10-1 outsider takes on undisputed super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez in Mexico on Saturday night with only 50 out of the 60,000 fans there cheering on the Islington southpaw.

If 34-year-old Ryder achieves the impossible by winning the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles, it would rank alongside previous feats overseas by legends such as Ken Buchanan, John H Stracey and Lloyd Honeyghan.
And it would be some achievement for the boxer who worked as a bouncer at East London nightclubs in 2017 after a couple of defeats left him languishing.
With typical understatement, Ryder said: “I know it’s going to be hostile. But to go and fight a champion, you should go to their backyard to take their titles and that’s what I am doing.
“Most fighters have gone to Vegas or Texas to fight him but I’m in Guadalajara in the lion’s den.

“People think I am here for the paycheck, I am not. I am here to show that dreams can come true.”
Canelo, 32, has lost just two of his 62 fights with 39 knockouts while Stracey, now 72,  remains the only Brit to ever win a world title in Mexico after he stunned Jose Napoles in 1975.
Over pie and mash in Camden, Stracey told Ryder: “We boxed in the biggest bullring in the world, probably around 40,000 people.
“Just before my ringwalk they put me right next to where the bulls were kept and the smell was awful!

“I am sure they were trying to put me off. It was hostile, they wanted their man to win and you’ll get that, too.
“It can be daunting and frightening but boxers don’t get frightened.”Ryder, who has won 32 of his 37 pro bouts, promised Stracey he would not be overawed by facing Canelo.
He said: “I have met him a couple of times but that was with a fan-boy cap on.
“The respect is there but it is not going to be handshakes and selfies, I am here to do a job.”

Gervonta Davis gets 90 days house arrest putting career in doubt for role in hit-and-run weeks after Ryan Garcia fight

GERVONTA DAVIS has been put on house arrest for 90 days for his involvement in a 2020 hit-and-run.The boxing pound-for-pound superstar’s career has been put on hold after his sentencing in Baltimore, Maryland.

Davis admitted to fleeing the scene of a car accident in 2020, after his Lamborghini Urus smashed into a car carrying four people – including a pregnant woman.
Davis was in the car with two other people when he ran a red light.
All three left the scene before officers could assist.
The fighter entered a guilty plea including a sentence of 60 days of unsupervised home detention.

One of the passengers in the other car, Jyair Smith, spoke out against the plea deal.
“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis, I looked him in his eyes,” Davis said.
“I said, ‘I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.’ He never once came over to help me.”
The 90-day house arrest is a far cry from the maximum penalty of 50 months in prison if found guilty.

The new sentencing comes days after Davis secured a significant win over fighting superstar Ryan Garcia.
Davis destroyed Garcia in their hugely-anticipated catchweight clash with a seventh-round body shot KO.
The rousing defeat catapulted Davis’ stardom, with many speculating he may be the new face of the sport.
Now, his sentence calls into question if he will be allowed into the boxing ring again.
The fight was allowed to take place after sentencing was delayed so the pair could finally clash.
In a separate incident, Broward County Police arrested Davis in February after he allegedly hit a woman using a “closed hand type slap.”
The woman suffered a small cut on the inside of her mouth from the alleged contact, according to the incident report.

I’m the barrister who saved Anthony Joshua’s boxing career – he thanked me with Klitschko tickets but I turned him down

ONE of London’s top criminal barristers has spoken out on how he helped save Anthony Joshua’s boxing career. But a family wedding meant he had to turn down ringside seats for AJ’s epic Wembley win against Wladimir Klitschko.
Barrister Tony Wyatt has spoken out on his role in saving Anthony Joshua’s boxing careerCredit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAqRYYQ7fHs&t=2293s
But Wyatt couldn’t be there to see Joshua beat Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley in 2017Credit: Getty
Barrister Tony Wyatt has revealed how he helped keep Joshua’s career on track in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.
It came after AJ, who has spoken openly about his past, was discovered by police with a large amount of cannabis in his car.
Wyatt was approached by Joshua’s coach at Finchley Boxing Club in 2011 and was told to be able to fight in the Olympics, AJ had to qualify through the European Qualification Tournament.
However, the “trouble” he had got himself into meant he had his licence taken away from him.
    READ MORE ON ANTHONY JOSHUA
Recalling a conversation with the judge and prosecutor, Wyatt acknowledged that Joshua had committed the offence.
However, the potential punishment could have ended AJ’s career as he would not have been able to fight in the European qualifying for the Olympics.
As a result, Kent “fronted that up” to the judge, and AJ submitted a guilty plea.
He said on the Anything Goes with James English podcast: “If he were to plead guilty of possession you could give him the harshest possible period of unpaid work.

“That would allow him to get his licence back. It would allow him to fight in the Europeans. It would allow him to fight in the Olympics.
“It would allow him in his future to fight in America which he could never have done if he had supply on his record.
“It allows him to have his life. It also allows him to spend 300 hours in boxing clubs in a few months time once he’s famous, helping kids who might otherwise be on the streets. So it allows it to be paid forward.”
Wyatt said ultimately going down that route helped save Joshua’s career.
He continued: “As an outcome for a case like this, surely that’s a far more positive outcome to society than sending him into a prison for a short amount of time, ruining his future, no career left. Surely that’s better?
“The judge agreed. Prosecutor ultimately agreed with some encouragement from the judge. And that’s the route we went down.”
Joshua was consequently able to get his licence back, and therefore fight in the European qualifying for the Olympic Games.
He went on to win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London before turning pro the following year.
One of Joshua’s greatest nights came in 2017, when he knocked out Klitschko in the 11th round at Wembley.
But Kent couldn’t be there to see it.
He revealed: “You mention the Klitscko fight. He gave me ringside seats to that and I couldn’t go because of a bloody family wedding.

“It wasn’t even my family, it was my wife’s family!

‘Can you not read?’ – KSI and Tommy Fury erupt into Twitter spat amid rumoured talks for celebrity boxing fight

KSI and Tommy Fury erupted into a Twitter spat amid rumoured talks for a celebrity boxing fight between the two. YouTube, music and influencer boxing star KSI looked on course to finally settle his score with arch rival Jake Paul this year.

But those plans look to have faced the KO after Paul was beaten by Fury in February by split-decision in Saudi Arabia.
KSI has since revealed he now wants to instead face Fury and finish what Paul started.
He tweeted: “I’d much rather fight and beat Tommy Fury so I can ruin Jake Paul’s legacy.”
But a shocked Fury, 23, responded: “Wait. Beat who?”

To which KSI, 29, bluntly fired back: “Beat you. Can you not read?”
Paul, 26, snubbed a Fury rematch or talks with KSI to instead return on August 5 in Texas against 38-year-old ex-UFC star Nate Diaz.
So KSI will refuse to wait around for Paul and instead try to one-up his arch enemy by beating Fury.
He told SunSport: “I want Tommy Fury, simple as that. I’m not going to waste my time with Jake Paul.

“He wants to fight Nate Diaz, an MMA fighter who isn’t known for his boxing; black belt in jujitsu, blah, blah, blah.
“Maybe in the UFC ring it would be a bit more entertaining, in the MMA ring yeah, but in the boxing ring everyone just knows Jake is going to win that.
“I’m not just going to waste my time, I’m going to go straight for Tommy and do what Jake Paul couldn’t.”
KSI returns on May 13 at Wembley Arena against millionaire nightclub tycoon-turned 9-0 boxer Joe Fournier, 40.
But in the background, his promoter Kalle Sauerland revealed ongoing negotiations with Fury and his dad John.
And KSI insisted the talks to face the brother of unbeaten heavyweight champion Tyson is no publicity stunt.
He said: “It’s so funny, because a lot of people think it’s all cap.
“A lot of people think I’m just chatting out my a***. Does it look like I’m chatting out my a***?
“We’re working on it, man. Just a few thing but I think we’re very close and I’m pretty sure, fingers crossed by next week, we’ll see.”

KSI defied pleas from his team to stop 15st Logan Paul from jumping on him at WrestleMania just weeks before next fight

KSI defied the pleas from his entire team to stop Logan Paul from jumping on him from the top rope at WrestleMania. The YouTube, music and crossover boxing star accompanied Paul – wearing a Prime drink suit – in his match with Seth Rollins.

And KSI got his first taste of WWE action when he took a frog splash from Paul, who was aiming for Rollins.
The spot came just six weeks before KSI’s next fight, against millionaire nightclub tycoon-turned boxer Joe Fournier.
So it proved hard to convince his camp that letting Paul – who weighs around 15 stone – collapse on him was a good idea.
But KSI told SunSport: “Trust me, it was hard. From the Sidemen, to my trainers, to my manager, they were all stressing.

“And the funny thing is, I was the one who was gassed the most. I was like, ‘Let’s do it, this is sick, I love this idea.’
“So, they had a few plans to try change it so that Logan wouldn’t be jumping on me.
“But I was like, ‘That’s boring, man. That’s not ground breaking, I want this to be huge.’ I was like, ‘I can take a bump, it’s fine. Let’s do it.’
“So yeah, I talked them into it, we did some practise and then we just went for it.”

KSI, 29, thankfully emerged unscathed for his DAZN pay-per-view fight with 9-0 Fournier, 40, next Saturday at Wembley Arena.
It will be his seventh bout in the ring, following a draw in 2018 and win over Paul in their rematch a year later.
But the pair are remarkably now friends and business partners having launched hydration drink Prime to great success.
Paul, 28, is yet to box since taking American legend Floyd Mayweather, 46, the distance in their June 2021 exhibition.
Instead the social media sensation has focussed his efforts on the WWE, earning himself a new contract.
And although KSI was talked into receiving a frog splash from the air, it could be his first and last finisher in the WWE ring.
KSI said: “I enjoyed it but it’s just not for me, man. It’s a lot work, it’s a lot of work.
“I see what Logan does, I’ve seen behind the scenes what he has to do in order to entertain as well as take bumps. It’s too much for me.”

Conor McGregor brutally reacts to Manny Pacquiao’s huge £6.8million court battle with now-deleted tweet

CONOR McGREGOR has responded in a now-deleted tweet following Manny Pacquiao’s huge £6.8million court battle.Pacquiao in 2020 signed with Paradigm Sports management, who also represent the company’s highest-earner McGregor.

But PacMan failed to have a fight under Paradigm and was instead sued for breach of contract.
Following a case in California, Pacquiao was left to owe $8m (£6.3m), with £4m in damages, £1.7m in legal fees and additional 10 percent annual interest on the verdict amount for three years.
McGregor, 34, took to social media, reacting to the news by posting: “And don’t let it happen again, @MannyPacquiao.”
And in a now-deleted tweet, he added: “Manny owes 8 in all. 5.1 he owes and then 2.1 in legal costs.

“Legal fees are heavy but that’s what we do. Heavy weight operations.”
Paradigm signed Pacquiao, 44, as a client three years ago amid rumours of a fight with McGregor, who lost to Floyd Mayweather in 2017.
A bout with Mikey Garcia was also in the works until Pacquiao was later announced to be facing Errol Spence Jr.
American Spence, 33, pulled out injured and was replaced by Yordenis Ugas, who won the fight and sent Pacquiao into retirement.

But Paradigm alleged that Pacquiao’s other representatives –  Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions – interfered with their deal.
It led to Paradigm filing the lawsuit, which Pacquiao lost when the jury ruled that he acted in bad faith.
The Orange County jury voted 9-3 in favour of Paradigm in the case.
Paradigm CEO Audie Attar said in a statement: “We are elated to learn of the jury’s ruling in Paradigm’s favor in our suit against Manny Pacquiao.
“The jury plainly found that Pacquiao testified falsely in denying Paradigm’s claims against him, and his excuses for his conduct proves our case that a breach of contract was committed.
“Hopefully, Manny will have learned a lesson from the verdict and will henceforth act with the honesty and integrity that was so lacking in his treatment of Paradigm.”
Pacquiao retired as a professional following defeat to Ugas, 36, but returned last December for an exhibition bout.
The Filipino icon has revealed his next exhibition is set for the summer while he has also opened the door to a full boxing comeback.

Tragic tale of Commonwealth Games gold medallist boxer who ‘went missing’ for 30 years.. before being found in a coma

THE name Frankie Lucas means nothing to today’s boxing fans. But he had such a tragic and bittersweet life it has been turned into a dramatic three-act play.

Starring Emmerdale’s Jazz Lintott as Frankie, ‘Going for Gold’ opens at the Rotunda Theatre in Brighton on the 29th of this month before transferring to the Chelsea Theatre the week after.
Frankie’s fascinating story began 60 years ago when, as a nine-year-old, he arrived from St Vincent to be with his mother in South London.
A difficult child, he found his niche by joining Croydon’s prestigious Sir Philip Game ABC.
He won two ABA middleweight titles and should have represented England at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand.
    READ MORE ON BOXING
But inexplicably he was snubbed by the selectors, who instead chose Carl Speake — the man he had beaten in the 1973 ABA final.
Frankie, angry at being left out without explanation, was about to turn pro when Ken Rimington, a policeman and a Sir Philip Game committee man, came to his rescue.
Rimington got in touch with the authorities on St Vincent, who weren’t sending any athletes to New Zealand and persuaded them to let Frankie become their one-man team.
I was in the Christchurch athletes’ village and got to know the abrasive, hard-hitting Frankie, who had no idea he was about to rub shoulders with royalty in the week leading up to the opening ceremony.
    Most read in Boxing
Because he was the only representative of the Caribbean island of his birth, Lucas was considered the head of delegation, team manager, flag bearer and athlete.
He was given VIP status with a chauffeur-driven limousine at his disposal.
I shall never forget walking into his room in the Games village and seeing half a dozen embossed invitations to various receptions to be attended by either the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles or Princess Anne.
When I asked him if he had accepted any of them, with a cheeky grin he said he was going to go to all of them.
Yet despite his unexpected hectic social life, Frankie reached the middleweight final where he KO’d highly rated Zambian Julius Luip in two rounds to bring home the gold medal.
He then decided to turn pro and had an unforgettable brawl with Tony Sibson for the vacant British middleweight championship, before suffering a fifth-round KO at the Albert Hall 44 years ago.
It was shortly after that that Frankie’s life took a disastrous turn.Deeply depressed because he couldn’t get meaningful boxing bouts, he went missing.
Nothing was heard from him for more than 30 years and nearly everyone who knew him, including me, assumed he was dead.
    FRANKIE’S FIGHT
Five years ago he was discovered suffering from brain cancer and in a coma.
Frankie’s fighting spirit rose to the surface and, miraculously, he survived.
That was when he was reunited with his family, although he was suffering from severe mental problems.
Lintott, who is also producing ‘Going for Gold’, heard about the saga and the idea of a play was born.
Despite his health problems, Frankie was also able to help Lintott with his research.
But sadly, there is a dreadful irony to this tale. Frankie didn’t live long enough to see himself portrayed on stage, dying on April 8.
His son, Michael, who was a useful amateur heavyweight and nearly made the 2000 British Olympic team, told me: “I was a year old when my father won his gold medal.

“He went out of my life when I was eight and didn’t come back into it until I was 46.
“But I’m consoled that at least he got to meet his granddaughter and great-grandson.”
