I didn’t care whether I lived or died after losing to Mayweather and Pacquiao, even my parents wouldn’t speak to me

RICKY HATTON “didn’t care” if he lived or died after losing to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather – and even his parents refused to speak to him.The Manchester boxer, 44, was literally on top of the world as IBO and The Ring light-welterweight champion.

He stepped up to welterweight and was stopped by Mayweather in 2007 then surrendered his world titles to Pacquiao two years later.
But away from the boxing ring and public persona, the Hitman was struggling with his mental health, to the point he felt suicidal as his life appeared to crumble around him.
Hatton said: “I was always paranoid about what people think, what’s the point in being world champion if everyone thinks you’re a d***head?
“In my own mind, I’d think everyone was laughing at me after losing to Mayweather, I felt embarrassed.

“It got worse when I lost to Mayweather and Pacquiao and I fell out with my mum, dad and [trainer] Billy Graham.
“I was suicidal. It ate away at me. I didn’t care if I lived or died.
“I thought to myself, ‘It’s over for me, no boxing, no parents to talk to, no Billy Graham to talk to, what the f*** am I doing here?’ That’s how bad it was.
“After the Pacquiao defeat was the worst time, I knew I was past it and had to retire.

“I was done. In my early 30s, I still had a lot of life to live but thought who would I celebrate this with?
“It was terrible, absolutely terrible. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”
Hatton came back for one last pro fight in 2012, getting knocked out by Vyacheslav Senchenko in his hometown.
His difficulties with substance abuse – including alcohol and drugs – as well as depression were a serious concern but Hatton sought help and has thankfully turned his life around.
He is now an advocate, encouraging people to talk about their mental health – after experiencing the pain of feeling unable to share in his lowest moments.
    ‘CAN’T KEEP IT IN’
Hatton continued on the RAW: The Fight Within podcast: “Mental health is so important because I nearly wasn’t here.
“Now [son] Campbell has gone professional and I’m a granddad.
“I’ve made up with Mum and Dad and Billy Graham. Look at all those wonderful things. If I’d killed myself, look what I would have lost out on.
“Jennifer my ex, I lived with her and she knew I wasn’t well but she didn’t even know how bad it was.
“When I was on my own I’d be in tears wanting to kill myself but then when I went home.
“I couldn’t go to my mates. They’d think, ‘Rick’s lost the plot,’ so I kept it in, that’s where the damage is done – you can’t keep it in on your own.

Before the fifth round, Jake’s older brother Logan was asked what he had to say to his sibling ahead of the fight.
Logan said: “I said ‘Jake I love you.
“‘I’m not gonna give you a big speech, I know you got this but either come back victorious or come back on your shield.’
    “I love you, bro.”

However, the reporter was under the impression that Logan was professing his love for him, and responded: “I love you too, man.”
The awkward gaffe amused fans, especially TalkSport host Woods.

The 35-year-old responded to Roman Kemp sharing the viral clip, saying: “This was amazing.”
Fury, 23, went on to win the eight-round slugfest via split decision.

The decision went in his favour despite rival Paul scoring a knockdown in round eight.
Paul said after the fight: “Well, s***. Didn’t think I’d ever have to make one of these videos, but s**t happens I guess.

Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul was PR masterclass and huge commercial win but clumsy tangle of punches ends world title dreams

TOMMY FURY and Jake Paul jetted out of Saudi Arabia with their bank balances grossly inflated – but their world title bubbles finally burst.Sunday night’s Saudi Arabia circus was many things; a masterclass in PR, a sportswashing spectacular, an intriguing 50-50 match-up, a huge commercial success and a clumsy hard-to-watch tangle of punches.
Fury and Paul settled their longstanding dispute on SundayCredit: EPA
Fury won by split decisionCredit: Getty
One thing it certainly was not was a springboard into serious boxing bouts or even domestic titles.
These handsome, rich and successful young men can do almost anything they want to. But mixing it with legitimate fighters – past, present or future – is beyond them.
Paul, the American 26-year-old master marketeer who promised to beat Mexican ring legend Canelo Alvarez after dealing with Fury, bumped his thinning thatch on the ceiling he hit with a split decision loss.
Fury, the 23-year-old little brother of Tyson who charmed us on Love Island, has always been more modest but suffered from his pushy father’s bluster about being another world champion in the gene pool.

But neither of these brave, fit, strong and popular social media stars will ever win a genuine boxing belt on merit.
Any Area or English champion currently competing around their weight – while struggling to make a living and almost all juggling a 9-5 manual job on the side – would wipe the floor with either of them.
The grasping WBC sanctioning body might invent more glittery straps for Fury and Paul to grapple over.
But the absolute myth that these men could ever lace the boots of – let alone compete with – bonafide boxers is now, thankfully, firmly in the bin.

Former super-middleweight world champ Carl Froch – one of the names Paul ridiculously tried to call out – summed it up with typically ruthless precision.
After the split decision sparked Fury’s tears, the Cobra spat: “It might not shut him up for long, but Jake Paul can’t call himself a professional boxer because he’s gone in against a novice pro and got absolutely whooped.
“Tommy got a thoroughly deserved win against a really basic, hapless Jake Paul.
“Tommy’s done professional boxing purists a massive favour by shutting up Jake Paul.
“He can’t call himself a professional boxer because he’s gone in against a novice pro and got absolutely whooped. He got obliterated.”

Paul can activate a rematch clause, if he decides against it then Fury is free to explore a bout with fellow Englishman and internet phenomenon KSI.
For risking their giant followings and youthful good looks, these men deserve credit. But the blurring of the lines between YouTube boxing and real boxing now has to stop.
These clashes might be classed as professional boxing bouts but they generate much more money and a lot less quality than the real thing. More

In December 2018, Fury outboxed Wilder before The Bronze Bomber floored the Brit heavily in the final round.
Fury somehow climbed back to his feet, before the judges controversially awarded it a draw.
A little over a year later, Fury rematched Wilder in Las Vegas, destroying him in a one-sided seven-round beatdown.
Their final fight then came in October 2021 and it was the best of the lot.
Fury floored Wilder in the third round, before the American came firing back in the fourth with two knockdowns of his own.
But Fury ended up coming through the dramatic clash in the 11th as he laid Wilder out on the canvas to retain the WBC title.
Since then, Fury has picked up stoppage wins over Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora.
Meanwhile, Wilder returned in October with a first round KO of Robert Helenius. More
