Boxing fans cannot believe ‘shameful’ scorecards from shock Joe Joyce loss to Zhilei Zhang and call for ‘investigation’

BOXING fans were open-mouthed after Joe Joyce was left shut-eyed – as one judge had the battered, beaten Brit LEADING Zhilei Zhang.Viewers want the “shameful” and crazy” scorecard “investigated” after outclassed Joyce was finally pulled out in round six, with his right eye horribly swollen and vision limited.

Zhang’s one-sided win means the Chinese heavyweight now has the WBO’s interim belt, making him their mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk’s WBA, IBF & WBO world titles.
One fan posted: “Joyce up by 1 on a judge’s scorecard. Never in a million years.”
Another wrote: “Whichever judge has Joyce up on the scorecard should probably be investigated.”
And a third summed up the consensus on social media with this message: “One judge had Joyce up on the cards! Crazy. Thankfully Zhang pressed for the stoppage. Fully deserved.”

A fourth found the verdict too amusing to take seriously as he said: “Loooool. I love boxing.”
Even Joyce admitted: “I am disappointed with my performance. I could not get out of the way of his shots.”
Both his eyes were bloodied and bruised after he survived, in particular, an astonishing pounding in round two.
Four rounds later, the referee stopped the contest on the advice of a doctor.

Fans praised Zhang, 39, as much as they berated the performance of Joyce and at least one of the judges.
One boxing enthusiast said of the pummelled Putney 37-year-old: “Shouldn’t really be much of a surprise. You can’t use your face as a form of defence at a high level.”
And amid all the disbelief over the controversial scorecard, another observer wrote: “Zhang was superb. Rocked Joyce so many times – who just gets caught so much.”
A similar opinion was: “Don’t let the stoppage take anything away from Zhang. He was phenomenal & Joyce was horrific.”

Joe Joyce’s world title hopes in tatters after shock loss to Zhilei Zhang as Brit can’t see out of horror swollen eye

JOE JOYCE’S world title dreams were shut down with his battered right eye.The Londoner just needed to come through Chinese southpaw Zhilei Zhang, 39, to secure a summer showdown with Dillian Whyte — before finally securing a shot at glory in the winter.

But he made a typically terrible start to the bout, was on the back foot for almost every moment of the six one-sided rounds and had to be pulled out by the referee on advice from the doctor.
The fact he was still standing after the second round was incredible but Joyce’s famously solid chin just meant his eyes were left to absorb all of the punishment.
With Joyce’s mother registered blind, the idea of him suffering serious long-term damage was too much to bear for anyone watching with knowledge of the family.
So there was relief when the Rio 2016 Olympic silver winner was withdrawn from the fight — without going out on his shield.
The fallen warrior, 37, said: “I am disappointed with my  performance. I could not get out of the way of his shots.”
Joyce is a famously slow starter and gave his Copper Box fans a trademark fright with a slug of an opener.
Big Bang Zhang landed a huge right hook and a left  that would have felled a tree.
But the freakishly firm Putney ace swallowed the blows and landed a meaty straight right to calm fans’ nerves.

The second was a  disaster, too. Zhang landed a violent combination that almost sent Joyce tumbling out of the ring.
The right eye was closing as soon as the third started, making it even harder to spot Zhang’s giant left-handers  coming over the top.
Every counter left  from the 2008 silver medallist seemed to buzz the Brit, whose nose was streaming and whose right eye was closing into a slit.
A stone lighter than when he last fought, Joyce was being bullied by the 19st visitor.
It took four rounds for him to have any success at all and, even then, Zhang snatched back control of the round.
By the fifth Joyce’s right eye was gone, he was blinded  and it was costing him his accuracy and balance, as well as his sight.
The ringside doctor checked it  but he let the sixth start — only to then advise referee Howard Foster to  wave it off.
Joyce added:  “I apologise to all the fans who came out.

Bridges’ weigh-ins themselves attract as much attention as her fights, but she believes the internet would go into meltdown if a bout with fellow Aussie Mathie came to fruition.
During an appearance on talkSPORT, the IBF bantamweight champion said: “I love Avril, I think she’s great, honestly.
“She works really hard and I respect her for what she does, her hustle, her lifestyle and what she’s done.
“I think it will be a great fight and it will definitely be crowd-pleasing.

Bridges and Mathie, who both sell sultry snaps on OnlyFans, were due to throw down last year but a hand injury for the former delayed the fight.
And a loss to British-Somali star Ramla Ali last month has temporarily derailed Mathie’s plans for the Battle of Oz.
Bridges took notice of her countrywoman’s setback, which has her believing a fight with her would be an easy night at the office.

Anthony Yarde hoping it’s third time lucky in world title fights and two devastating losses to Russian P4P superstars

ANTHONY YARDE still hopes it’s third time lucky after two world title losses to Russian pound-for-pound stars made him love boxing even more. The 31-year-old light-heavyweight lasted 11 rounds against Sergey Kovalev in the Soviet outpost of Chelyabinsk in 2019 before he was floored by jet-lag, inexperience and exhaustion.

Yarde has lost fights to Sergey Kovalev and Artur BeterbievCredit: AP:Associated Press
After a solid rebuild, he welcomed terrifying KO king Artur Beterbiev to Wembley in January and enjoyed some moments before the WBC, IBF and WBO champ made him his 19th consecutive stoppage in round eight.
Even with two impressive performances at the elite level, the agony of those punishing defeats might have been enough to break a weaker man.
But the Frank Warren-promoted Hackney Lion is already planning a summer comeback on BT Sport.
Yarde said: “They were at different stages of my career and I am 31 now so I am getting older and wiser.

“I was heartbroken after the losses but this sport and career is a journey. I haven’t been unlucky, it’s just how the wheel spins.
“The two world champions I have fought just happened to be the two most monstrous Russian punchers of their time.
“But I love it, I love the challenges, I love the big occasions, I just love it.”
Yarde’s love of catchphrases, tippy-tappy padwork and supposed aversion to hard sparring had doubters questioning his heart going into the Beterbiev battle in January this year.

But he absorbed huge shots, slung dozens back and only stopped when his clever and compassionate coach Tunde Ajaye threw in the towel.
There are no more question marks over Yarde’s heart or heavy hands but he has only watched the sensational showdown back once and will revisit it before his return.
He said: “I need to watch it again. I never want to overwhelm myself with anything.
“After a fight like that, I just want to relax. I watched it back once, not immediately, because I wanted to view it with a clear head . . . and I thought, ‘What a fight!’”
The Beast from the East has one of the most impressive physiques in British boxing — despite a self-confessed love of junk food.
But he admits to treating himself to one cheeky cocktail on his recent Dominican Republic break that left the dedicated athlete seeing stars.
Yarde grinned: “I had a two-week break, fantastic sunshine, eating right on the beach and mocktails.
“I did have one cocktail and then I was loose for the whole day. Those tropical vibes are a bit of me.”
The 12½st division is one of the most competitive in Britain with Yarde joined by stars including Callum Smith, Joshua Buatsi, Dan Azeez and Craig Richards.
Yet the Eastender refuses to get dragged into the painfully frustrating negotiations that go on behind the scenes when trying to make these domestic dust-ups.

He said: “I’ll be back in the ring ASAP. But I don’t really get involved in talks about who I’m fighting, where and when.

Deontay Wilder has the power to KILL opponents as Carl Frampton issues grim warning to Anthony Joshua amid fight rumours

FORMER world champion boxer Carl Frampton has warned Anthony Joshua a fight with Deontay Wilder would be “dangerous” for him.Earlier this week talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan reported that a Wilder vs Joshua clash was being planned for Saudi Arabia later this year.

He also claimed Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk could take place in Saudi as well as the Middle East nation look to secure the undisputed fight.
In theory, the winners of the two fights would then face off.
Jordan’s claims come after Joshua, 33, revealed on social media that he will not be back in the ring until December.
That is despite initially planning to fight in the summer following his decision victory over Jermaine Franklin earlier this month.

Now two-weight world champion Frampton, 37, who retired in 2021, has had his say on a potential Wilder-Joshua bout.
And he feels KO artist Wilder, 37, would be a high-risk fight for Britain’s Olympic gold medallist.
Speaking on iFL TV about American Wilder, he said: “His right hand can just kill people.
“I was there when he fought Luis Ortiz and he lost every second of the fight.

“He hits him with a shot on the forehead where normally [if] you hit someone on the forehead you break your hand. But it knocked Luis Ortiz out.
“I think he [Joshua] is still a bit hesitant for someone like Wilder and it would be a very dangerous fight for him.”
Wilder has a record of 43 wins, one draw and two defeats, with 42 KO victories.
He has knocked out every man he has stepped into the ring with aside from Fury – who he dropped four times across their classic trilogy.
Former WBC champion Wilder returned to the ring for the first time since his second loss to Fury in October last year when he iced Robert Helenius in the first round.
Meanwhile, Joshua bounced back from two losses to Usyk on April 1 with an underwhelming points win over Franklin.
As well as a fight with Wilder, AJ has also been linked with bouts against Fury and Dillian Whyte.
