Deontay Wilder’s coach says Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk is ‘nowhere near as exciting’ as Anthony Joshua fight

DEONTAY WILDER’S trainer believes his man fighting Anthony Joshua is far more exciting than Tyson Fury against Oleksandr Usyk. All four of the heavyweight division’s top talent have been linked with a tournament-style series of bouts in Saudi Arabia.

It would see Fury, 34, and Usyk, 36, unify all four belts following failed talks to do so in London in April.
And Joshua, 33, is lined up to finally face Wilder, 37, to end years of rivalling the American.
Fury and Usyk have the chance to merge the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles for the first time in heavyweight history.
But despite the landmark occasion, Wilder’s coach Malik Scott argued their blockbuster with AJ is far more appealing.

He told ESNews: “It’s not in comparison to Deontay fighting Anthony Joshua, that’s nowhere near as exciting a match-up.
“Usyk and Fury is, in my opinion, not an exciting match-up.
“Even if Fury went in to knock him out, it wouldn’t be as exciting as Deontay and AJ going at it.”
Fury is set to return in July at Wembley Stadium with Andy Ruiz Jr, 33, the frontrunner to challenge for his WBC title.

It followed after talks with Usyk collapsed amid a row over the financials for a potential rematch.
The Ukrainian unified champ has now been ordered into a WBA mandatory title defence against Daniel Dubois, 25, with final details to be confirmed.
Joshua meanwhile returned with a victory in April against Jermaine Franklin, 29, off the back of consecutive losses to Usyk.
And he had been linked with a rematch against Dillian Whyte, 34, in the summer.
But after promoter Eddie Hearn jetted out to Riyadh for fight talks, his attention appears to be solely on Wilder.
In a video reposted to YouTube by iFL TV from Instagram, AJ was asked if he’s going to beat Wilder.
Joshua responded: “That’s what’s happening, you know what’s going on.”
Asked if the fight was going ahead in December, he replied: “It’s public news we’re getting it down, throwing it down in December.”

He landed a fast one-two right on the opening bell to knockout Kenneth Jamerson (0-7) in their flyweight bout.
Despite touching gloves before the opening bell, Jamerson walked straight out into the centre of the ring at the start of the fight with his guard down and attempted to do it again.
But Santana was having none of it, and he landed a left and right to send his rival crashing back into his corner on the floor.
The dazed Jamerson did try to get to his feet, but as he staggered around, the referee called the fight off.

Another wrote: “Seemed a cheap thing to do against a bloke who is 0-6 (6KOs) and was guaranteed to be stopped early anyway.”

KSI says he is ‘very close’ to Tommy Fury fight but fears a win will scare Jake Paul away from bitter grudge match

KSI says he is “very close” to sealing a fight against Tommy Fury – but fears it could ultimately KO his grudge match with Jake Paul. The bitter YouTube rivals looked set to finally end their years of feuding with a blockbuster at the end of 2023.

But that was until Paul suffered defeat for the first time, losing a split-decision to Fury in February in Saudi Arabia.
The American snubbed a rematch or talks with KSI to instead return on August 5 in Texas against 38-year-old ex-UFC star Nate Diaz.
So KSI will refuse to wait around for Paul and instead try to one-up his arch enemy by finishing what he started.
KSI told SunSport: “He doesn’t want it. I want Tommy Fury.

“I want Tommy Fury, simple as that. I’m not going to waste my time with Jake Paul.
“He wants to fight Nate Diaz, an MMA fighter who isn’t known for his boxing; black belt in jujitsu, blah, blah, blah.
“Maybe in the UFC ring it would be a bit more entertaining, in the MMA ring yeah, but in the boxing ring everyone just knows Jake is going to win that.
“I’m not just going to waste my time, I’m going to go straight for Tommy and do what Jake Paul couldn’t.”

KSI, 29, returns on May 13 at Wembley Arena against millionaire nightclub tycoon-turned 9-0 boxer Joe Fournier, 40.
But in the background, his promoter Kalle Sauerland revealed ongoing negotiations with Fury, 23, and his dad John.
And KSI insisted the talks to face the brother of unbeaten heavyweight champion Tyson is no publicity stunt.
He said: “It’s so funny, because a lot of people think it’s all cap.
“A lot of people think I’m just chatting out my a***. Does it look like I’m chatting out my a***?
“We’re working on it, man. Just a few thing but I think we’re very close and I’m pretty sure, fingers crossed by next week, we’ll see.”
I’m not just going to waste my time, I’m going to go straight for Tommy and do what Jake Paul couldn’t.KSI
KSI’s plan would deny Paul, 26, the chance to avenge his loss to Fury in a rematch many expected would follow.
But the YouTuber, rapper and influencer boxer also believes beating the 9-0 British prospect could scare his nemesis off for good.
KSI said: “I’m trying to think, do people still want to see it after I beat Tommy Fury?
“Because then at that point everyone will be in my favour, everyone will be like, ‘Jake has no chance.’ And maybe Jake would also think that.
“Maybe he’ll just avoid me and maybe he’ll just be happy with fighting MMA fighters.
“Obviously, I want to destroy Jake, but it takes two to tango, man. If he doesn’t want to fight me, what can I do?

Canelo Alvarez hints at shock career change as he eyes ‘impossible dream’ once he retires from boxing

CANELO ALVAREZ has hinted at a shock career change as he eyes achieving an “impossible dream” once he retires from boxing. The Mexican, a four-weight world champion who has unified belts in three divisions, is currently preparing for a huge homecoming this weekend.
Canelo Alvarez will go down as one of the greatest boxers to ever step in the ringCredit: AP
He will defend the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles against John Ryder on Saturday in front of 60,000 of his fans.
However, as well as boxing, the superstar also has another sporting “obsession” – golf.
We have seen him in action on the course in the past and he has shown that he possesses just as much magic in his swing as he does in his fists.
The 32-year-old won a celebrity tournament sponsored by BMW in South Carolina previously and also came within inches of a hole-in-one on the 17th at Pebble Beach.

Ahead of his showdown with Ryder, Canelo told the Daily Mail: “My handicap was down to six, now it’s up to ten.
“I’ve hardly played any golf in the last few weeks. I still love boxing – the doing not so much the watching – but golf is an addiction I have to break before fights.
“I got my handicap down during the covid lockdown and while building my recovery from hand injury.”
Despite his love of the game, Canelo, who revealed he studies Tiger Woods’ swing, bans himself from playing it during the pre-fight camps.

He said: “I can’t take those risks before a fight. Can’t afford even a small accident.”
And he says the game is even more difficult than being punched by a rival in the ring.
He added: “This is the hardest game ever. Well, golf is harder for me. I’ve boxed since I was a kid. Comes easy to me. It is harder to be consistent at golf.
“One shot can be great but the next terrible. One round great, next day horrible. One tiny alteration in making the shot can mean a big difference.”
His former promoter Oscar De La Hoya claimed that Canelo’s loss to Dmitry Bivol a year ago, only the second of his career, was due to the champ “spending all his time on the golf course.”
But Canelo hit back with: “I don’t care one bit about Oscar. I don’t listen to a word from him.
“I don’t care about anything he says about me. He’s a whoosh.
“He lives inside some strange bubble of his own. Away from the real world.”

And the Morecambe-based boxer’s cheeky personality leaves him in demand for personal appearances too.
He was paid $15million for a single appearance at WWE’s Crown Jewel pay-per-view in Saudi Arabia where he wrestled Braun Strowman.
His Netflix 10-part docuseries and his four autobiographies will no doubt have paid a pretty penny too.

But outside the ring Joshua is expected to have raked in at least $122million through coveted sponsorship deals.
Sports clothing Under Armour, Hugo Boss, Land Rover and Jaguar are all worth millions to Joshua and saw him earn a total of $11million in 2021.

Boxing fans across the world are salivating at the prospect of the long-time rivals trading blows in a lucrative Saudi showdown, although there are concerns for AJ following his gun-shy display against Jermaine Franklin last month.
And those concerns are shared by boxing legend Roy Jones Jr, who reckons the Brit needs to get comfortable being in the fire again.
The former four-weight world champion told iDBoxing: “It’s a very tough fight for him.
“I love AJ to death and I think he’s a great fighter.

“But his issue right now is dealing with punches coming back at him, so you don’t want to fight Wilder.”
Jones Jr reckons the unorthodox nature of Wilder’s concussive blows makes him one of the worst stylistic match-ups to take at this moment in time.
He continued: “Those punches that will be coming at you from him are different to anybody else in the division, so he’s got to go get that taken care of before he goes in front of Wilder.”
Joshua dominated a dogged and determined Franklin in his return to the win column last month but failed to make an impression in his first outing under new head coach Derrick James.

And Jones Jr would like the Watford warrior to get a couple more fights with James under his belt before taking on Wilder.
The 54-year-old said: “Sometimes it takes time for a fighter and trainer to get their whole aspect together.
“Apparently, that hasn’t happened straight away, but if they stay together, then maybe they’ll finally get some continuity.
“But they definitely didn’t get any in that first fight.
“Hopefully they get better as they go, it sometimes takes bit of time for things to kick in for a fighter and they get on the same page.

“So hopefully in the next couple of fights they’ll get better and start to gel.

Joshua, 33, revealed this past week that his long-awaited showdown with Wilder is seemingly all systems go for December.

I was knocked out by Muhammad Ali but another heavyweight hit me so hard I was seeing six of the same woman

GEORGE FOREMAN was knocked out by Muhammad Ali in their legendary Rumble in the Jungle – but The Greatest wasn’t the hardest-hitting heavyweight he’d ever faced. The entire world stood still on October 30, 1974 when Ali challenged the previously undefeated Foreman for the WBA, WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles.

Ali introduced the globe to his famous rope-a-dope technique on that famous night in the Congo, absorbing Foreman’s bruising body punches before stopping him in the eighth.
The late Ali undoubtedly packed a punch to put Foreman out for the count, although his power paled in comparison to former amateur opponent of ‘Big George’, Bob Winters.
The 74-year-old told talkSPORT: “I’ve been punched hard so many times.
“But, I was in a Golden Gloves match with a guy by the name of Bob Winters.

“He hit me so hard and knocked me down, I didn’t know boxers had that to happen to them.
“I saw about six women with the same coat on and after the referee counted they started disappearing and then I realised it was only one woman.
“That was being hit hard, I’ll never forget that, not seeing doubles and triples, but more.”
Boxing legend Foreman knew a thing or two about being a heavy hitter – calling time on his career with a whopping 83 per cent knockout ratio.

But he felt “ashamed” by some of his knockouts, telling World Boxing News: “Two things I will never forget about my boxing career: How hard I could hit [not proud of the first part] and how hard they punched me.
“I heard bells and whistles while bodies collapsed.
“The first time around [1967 to 1977], I hit so hard. I’d wake up ashamed of what I had done to [those] good people.
“I felt like they were boxing, and I was slaughtering.

“My gift was recklessness. I didn’t care if I broke my shoulder, arm, or knuckles or if I flew out of the ring. I had to get a KO or fall down myself.”
The Texas titan called time on his Hall-of-Fame career in 1997 following a majority decision defeat to Shannon Briggs.
But just four fights prior to his farewell bout, Foreman made history by becoming the oldest champion in boxing history.
