Emotional Chris Billam-Smith dedicates world title win to brave mum who was diagnosed with breast cancer for second time

CHRIS BILLAM-SMITH dedicated his hometown world title win to brave mum Carol who was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time just six weeks before his triumph. The 32-year-old took 15,000 fans to his boyhood Bournemouth stadium to dethrone former gym-mate and WBO cruiserweight champ Lawrence Okolie on Saturday.

The Gentleman missed son Frank’s first birthday party on Friday so he could make the weight after a nasty stomach bug.
And – after securing a majority decision thanks to three knockdowns and Okolie being deducted two points – he revealed a far sadder family tragedy had inspired him.
Choking back tears he explained: “My mum is an amazing woman, my best mate, my rock.
“We found out six weeks ago that she has a small lump.

“She had breast cancer before, 25 years ago, and had a mastectomy and it looks like she’ll have another one now.
“She has also had a stroke, she has beaten all of these things so it’s probably where I get my toughness from.”
Okolie insisted after the defeat – that could have come inside the distance through disqualification – that he will activate an instant rematch clause and even return to the Cherries’ ground.
The 2016 Olympian will need to drastically improve his hit-and-hold style that has bored fans before but never resulted in a pro defeat until Saturday.

But CBS warned him that he will face a far better version of himself in the rerun, after his fight week was wasted between his bedroom and bathroom and sapped him of his strength.
“It was gruelling and physical,” he said about the all-English clash. “I was ill all week so I didn’t rehydrate as well or as much as usual.
“I was never pulling out. I wasn’t letting 15,000 people down.
“I had sickness and diarrhoea on Tuesday morning, had a bug, fasted and it carried on until Thursday.

“I made weight easy but it wasn’t nice, I was really low on energy.
“The doctor had a go at me because I had to lie to him a little bit. But it was worth it.
“The camp had gone so well so I knew it was too good to be true. Loads of Dioralyte in the week got me through.”
The newly crowned ace has already jetted out on holiday to celebrate and recover from the clash that left him with a nasty cut on his left eye.
And the teetotal champ has plenty of grub and some Premier League football on the menu.
At 1am on Sunday morning he said: “I’m going on holiday in eight hours, my nutritionist is getting married abroad, hopefully he’ll let me eat what I want over there.
“Coming back here to watch football will be crazy. Hopefully I’ll be on the pitch for the first game of the season.

“The football club and the town have been brilliant with me, getting me on the pitch and helping grow my following.
“The town has been starved of boxing and now they have got me here, from selling out the arena twice and now here at the stadium with a world title.” More

Leigh Wood FLOORS Mauricio Lara to win rematch on points and regain featherweight title from monstrous Mexican puncher

LEIGH WOOD dropped and dominated Mauricio Lara to rip the world featherweight belt back from the monstrous Mexican puncher. Just three months after being brutally knocked out, Wood went against the wishes of his own promotional team by exercising his rematch clause.

And he was almost denied his shot at redemption all together when the British Boxing Board of Control refused to let Lara weigh in at the 126lb limit.
So instead he came in at 129.8lb – losing the belt on the scales – but still Wood pressed ahead with the bout.
And his giant roll of the dice paid off as he put on a clinic inside the Manchester Arena over 12 rounds.
Wood, 34, floored Lara, 25, with a perfectly-timed right uppercut in round two and never looked back.

He bossed the action throughout off his spearing jab, sharp feints and flashy combinations.
Lara – always carrying the power to close the show at any given moment – struggled to gain any kind of momentum.
Potentially feeling the effects of the weight cut, he made it far too easy for Wood to find his rhythm and run away with it.
Wood thanked his coaches Ben Davison and Lee Wylie as he celebrated winning back the WBA belt.

He said: “I wasn’t losing tonight, Mauricio Lara is a great fighter but I’ve got a great team, I knew what I had to do.
“Ben guided me well, Lee Wylie guided me well, that shot I put him down with, we come up with that and drilled it time and time again and it worked. Just a massive thank you to my team.
“That’s what I’m here for, I’m here for hard fights. I’m here for fights that it’s that nip-and-tuck, I may get beat but guess what? I come back and beat them.”
On the same night, Michael Conlan – who Wood knocked out in 2022 – was stopped in similar fashion by Luis Alberto Lopez.
So Wood is ready to unify against Lopez or welcome avid Leeds fan Josh Warrington to Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.
Wood said: “I think Warrington makes sense.
“Did Lopez win tonight or Conlan? Who won? Lopez unification fight, even bigger. I can get my teeth sunk into that.
“Whoever, I’ve probably got two fights left; City Ground is one of them, a unification could be the other.

Leigh Wood is the only man fighting for his old WBA featherweight crown after bloated Mauricio Lara was stripped ahead of their Saturday fight.
In February the violent Mexican stopped the 34-year-old Nottingham ace and snatched away his 126lbs world title.
The Manchester rematch was arranged but Lara – who refuelled for the original clash with a giant pizza and bottle of Coke on the Friday weigh-in stage – failed his midweek weight check.
The British Boxing Board of Control were concerned and warned Lara that he was forbidden from dehydrating himself down to less than 128.6lbs on Friday.
But, after Wood obeyed the rules and weighed in at 125.9lbs, Lara bowled in at 129.8lbs.
The BBBoC were fuming but the title decision fell to the sanctioning body who thankfully took action on Friday afternoon and stripped the champion.

So Lara was forced to vacate his 126lb featherweight title, but the belt is still up for grabs for Wood.

Lawrence Okolie suffers THREE knockdowns and TWO point deductions as hometown hero Chris Billam-Smith wins world title

So, in front of 15,000 fans at the Cherries’ Vitality stadium, he had the perfect gameplan to win the WBO cruiserweight crown with a majority decision.
After Okolie was dropped three times and docked two points, the judges scored it 112-112, 116-107 and 115-108.
The Gentleman missed son Stan’s first birthday on Friday to weigh-in under the 14st 4lbs limit and wanted to give his boy the best possible present, a world title belt.
Okolie insisted he was happy to play the bad guy and ruin the party and he was booed into the ring.

Okolie started the second more spitefully, with a couple of rifled right hands, but the bulk of the round was a hugfest, with ref Marcus McDonnell regularly pulling the giants apart.
Then Billam-Smith stunned the stadium with a left hook that dropped Okolie for the first time in his career and almost finished him.
The Sauce stumbled up to his feet and beat the count but then had to desperately cling on, making CBS trainer Shane McGuigan rage and leap up and down Left smashing the canvas.
Okolie’s gangly legs were still wobbly in the fifth and he rightly lost a point for even more holding. But CBS’s face was swelling up from regular thudding blows and the recurring head clashes.

Boos and cries of “w*****” rang out in the sixth when Okolie was warned again for roughhousing and Billam-Smith seemed to hurt him again with a right hand.
Okolie lost another point in the seventh for his octopus-like holding, he was too busy clinging onto CBS to keep hold of his crown.
Okolie finally landed some decent shots in the eighth when CBS got careless and showed signs of fatigue.
CBS scored with a couple of clever left looks in round nine but Okolie remained dangerous, with one right hand slashing through the challenger’s guard.
The tenth was thrilling, Okolie was decked again and only just beat the count. But then he battered back with a right-hand-left-hook combination that almost KO’ed CBS.
Blood was seeping from Billam-Smith’s left eye by the eleventh and Okolie was warned again over head butting.
Then Okolie collapsed on the floor again through exhaustion or another short left hook and could not land a KO in the 12th.
The tearful new champ said: “My whole life has led to this, this is perfect.
“Lawrence was a great champion who never looked like getting beat. It was not a great looking fight but that doesn’t matter.
