Saudi boxing bosses to fly in for Anthony Joshua’s fight with Robert Helenius in bid to wrap up Deontay Wilder deal

EDDIE HEARN has revealed boxing bosses from Saudi Arabia are set to fly in to watch Anthony Joshua’s next fight. Because if Joshua defeats Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena on Saturday night, all systems are a go for a blockbuster with Deontay Wilder.

Deontay Wilder is in talks to fight Anthony JoshuaCredit: Getty
Hearn said: “There’s definitely been a lot of work behind the scenes, months of discussions.
“We could get a deal done Sunday or Monday, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case.
“But the intention is to at least come over and agree a deal whilst they’re here but AJ’s got to win on Saturday.”
A December date was initially pencilled in for Joshua, 33, and Wilder, 37, but it looks to have now been backdated to January.

That is because AJ struck a deal to rematch Dillian Whyte, 35, the man he beat in 2015.
But with just seven days to go, Whyte was pulled out amid a failed drug test with Helenius, 39, brought in as a replacement.
It is eerily similar to when Jarrell Miller, 35, blew his chance of fighting Joshua following a disgraceful doping scandal in 2019.
Outsider Andy Ruiz Jr, 33, would replace Miller and later stun AJ in seven rounds, only to lose the rematch six months later.

But it ultimately KO’d a super-fight with Wilder, who instead would share a trilogy series with Tyson Fury, 34.
So Hearn wants to avoid lightening striking twice and insisted Joshua must first avoid another disastrous banana skin.
He said: “This is a bit different, if he loses to Robert Helenius, I’m not sure the direction we take with that.
“And whatever you think about Helenius, he’s an absolute lump and he can punch and he will try to win the fight.
“He won’t take a knee, he won’t not try and win. He will let his hands go until he gets knocked out. So AJ’s got to be switched on, it’s a big risk.
“But I still go along the lines of, if he can’t beat Robert Helenius, he ain’t beating Deontay Wilder. And we’re in these fights to win, not to get paid.”

Emery, 36, climbed the ropes and stunned fans in attendance and those watching the card at home by hoisting up her top and baring her chest.

But they will now see a less bustier version of the Aussie as she’s removed her implants for health reasons.
Emery revealed her harrowing ordeal in a brave Instagram post, writing: “After my debut, I used my newfound wealth on one major thing HEALTH because ‘Health Is Wealth!’

I had to cancel my family holiday to face Anthony Joshua on a week notice and my kids were fuming, says Robert Helenius

ROBERT HELENIUS faced the wrath of his children after cancelling their family holiday to fight Anthony Joshua on seven days notice. The Swedish-born Finn has been subbed in for Saturday night in place of Dillian Whyte, who failed a drug test.

So father-of-three Helenius had to break it to his kids – aged 15, 13 and ten – that their vacation would have to wait.
He told SunSport: “They’ve been in this game a long time, the kids have been in this game since they were born.
“They don’t know anything else. Of course they were sad, they wanted their holiday now! But life happens.”
Helenius was in the form of his life after beating American prospect Adam Kownacki consecutively.

It earned him a fight with Deontay Wilder last October but he was beaten after only 40 seconds and one right hand.
Helenius only returned last weekend, beating Mika Mielonen in a 15th-century three-tower CASTLE located in Savonlinna.
But he had little time to celebrate the win as immediately a shock offer was presented in his changing room.
Helenius, 39, revealed: “Five minutes after the fight my manager came to me and said, ‘Do you want to fight Anthony Joshua next Saturday?’

“I thought, ‘Oh s***.’ I’m still sweating, had my wraps on. I didn’t know if I could fight. I said, ‘Give me five minutes to think about this.’
“Then five minutes later I said, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s do this.’ This is what we do.”
Helenius admits he has been left to consider retirement many times in his career but his wildcard shot at AJ gives him one last shot.
He said: “I don’t know if this is the highest point in my career, it’s up there.
“I’ve been boxing for a long time, I knocked out Samuel Peters, Lamon Brewster, Sergei Liakhovich back in the day.
“I knocked out Kowanacki a couple of fights before the Wilder fight.
“So I can’t compare what one is the biggest, but this is up there of course. This is my opportunity to reclaim my dream.”
Helenius knows he can change his life forever by upsetting Joshua’s applecart and the magnitude of the moment is not missed on him.
He said: “When you have a really long thought about how your life is going and then it completely changes, for the better.
“I wasn’t thinking about this at all, I thought it would probably take up to two years to get back to this point. But, now I’m here.”

I served four years in the military before playing American football… but I gave up my NFL dream for boxing aged 30

GERALD WASHINGTON left behind a life in the military and dreams of the NFL to start chasing a boxing career at the age of 30. Now 41, the former world title challenger remains a fixture in major heavyweight fight nights.

He returns at the O2 Arena on Saturday night against Derek Chisora as his remarkable life tale readies for another chapter.
Washington told SunSport: “I’ve been riding a beautiful wave of life.
“I turned professional, worked my way up to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world.
“Was I ever expecting that in my life, to be able to start at 30 and be able to fight for a championship? No.

“But I was able to and I’m still in the game, competing at the highest level.
“I’m grateful to be here and it’s going to be an exciting fight on Saturday.”
Washington enlisted into the US navy at 18 and served four years.
He worked as a helicopter mechanic, stationed in San Diego, California and also served on a support and rescue squadron.

Washington credits his time in the military for helping pave the way for what was to come later on in his life.
He said: “I was in during 9/11, it was a very hectic time, a lot of chaos going on.
“It was a very disruptive time in the world in that particular time when I went in.
“But I was able to learn a lot, take a lot of life experiences from that and I was able to apply that to my life.”
Washington was then recruited to play college football and was an NJCAA All-American tight end.
From there he spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills practise NFL squads – before realising his future lied in the ring.
He said: “After I went to college, I signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2009.
“I was able to go over there to OTAs (organised team activities) and stuff like that.

“But soon after that I started boxing, doing some training and I decided that I wanted to pursue boxing instead.
“I liked the one-man aspect of it, everything falls and ends on me on the work that I put in and I was willing to work.
“I chose boxing, I boxed as a kid and I’m glad and grateful that I was able to grow into this beautiful body of mine, 6’6 and 250lb.”
Washington boxed briefly as a boy with ten amateur bouts to his name but he realised his talent and passion for the sweet science in sparring.
He revealed: “Boxing was always in my heart.
“I played football because I was able to run fast and have fun with it. But boxing was my sport, that was always in my heart.
“I grew up watching Julio Cesar Chavez, I watched Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, I grew up watching a lot of the greats and I always wanted to go out there and see what I could do.
“When I was doing football training, I started boxing, I sparred a couple of time put a couple of guys down and I felt what it felt like to be in the ring and I wanted to do it more.”

Washington had four more amateur bouts before turning professional at 30, winning his 2012 debut by KO.
Just 20 fights and five years later, he found himself challenging for Deontay Wilder’s WBC belt.
It ended in a fifth-round stoppage loss and Washignton would go on to become one of the most recognisable faces in the division.
He faced Jarrell Miller, Adam Kownacki and Anthony Joshua’s Saturday night opponent Robert Helenius.
And he also sparred the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, AJ, Wilder, Oleksandr Usyk and even Chisora, who he fights on Joshua’s undercard.
Helenius, 39, has filled in for Dillian Whyte, 35, who was taken off the bill due to a failed drug test.
Washington was considered but later overlooked as a substitute – although the American vowed to get his chance eventually.
He said: “We were ready to go. We’ve been working for a long time now and we was ready to go to put it together.
“But, they chose Robert Helenius and we’ll get him next time.”

Anthony Joshua sensationally claims boxing has major drugs problem and slams rivals for accusing him of ‘popping dirty’

ANTHONY JOSHUA claims boxing is being damaged by a serious doping problem.Dillian Whyte was kicked off Saturday’s grudge trilogy following adverse analytical findings in his Vada drug tests, leaving the sold-out O2 PPV event hanging by a thread.

Robert Helenius has jumped in to save the day — but Brit heavyweight Joshua said: “There’s a doping problem in the sport definitely. I don’t really mix inside the boxing industry but I know it’s a problem.
“How can people get away with doping if you are getting random drug tests?
“I get drug tested all year round, every quarter I have to submit my whereabouts; where I am going to be, every day, for an hour of the day, so they can turn up randomly.
“I have submitted that every day since 2011. So I don’t know why I am under this pressure but all these other boxers aren’t.

“It damages the sport. We lost the fight and nearly lost the card because of this situation.”
Whyte’s adverse findings gave AJ an open goal to stick the boot into the man he lost to as a 2009 amateur and beat in a 2015 British title bout.
Instead, he took the diplomatic route and said he hopes his old foe proves his innocence.
He said: “I don’t wish Dillian any bad but his reputation is tarnished.”

AJ will now take on 39-year-old Finn Helenius, who boxed in a 15th Century Swedish castle only last Saturday.
He said: “Helenius has two arms and is a good fighter, who won at the weekend.”
AJ is laughing at the drug cheats who had the front to accuse him of juicing.
American Jarrell Miller blew a shot at the WBA, IBF and WBO titles when he was caught taking a cocktail of steroids ahead of their planned 2019 fight.
And Whyte made repeated suggestions that Joshua offered him short-notice fights so he could cheat before being tested.
But Whyte is now fighting a career-threatening ban after adverse analytical findings, returned in his Voluntary Anti-Doping Association tests, ahead of the now-axed Saturday night clash.
Joshua faced rigorous testing before he became a national treasure, and target, by winning gold at the London 2012 Olympics. And, though he stops short of hammering Miller and Whyte, he is grinning at their hypocrisy.
Ahead of his hastily arranged replacement bout with Helenius, Joshua said: “It’s funny the two people who accused me have popped dirty themselves.
“Maybe they did it because of my physique or my success, my rise, it maybe didn’t make sense to them but it’s God-gifted and a lot of hard work.
“I have a long history of being drug tested and sometimes you have to question the person who keeps pointing the finger.”
AJ woke up to the Whyte news on Saturday morning and remained focused on fighting for his fans.
He said: “I got the news at 7am. My initial reaction was, ‘What’s next?’ I had two options — go ahead or cancel?
“Am I surprised? It happens in boxing, it’s not the first and won’t be the last. So no, I was not surprised.
“It is a dangerous sport but I am not disgusted. It doesn’t fill me with anger, no, but it’s not good.”
Supersub Helenius — who went 12 rounds with Brixton brawler Whyte in 2017 — says the UK needs to match his homeland and get tougher on cheats.
The Finn said: “Anti-doping should be the same in every country.
