London Marathon route: Covid-19 forces organisers to change course with 19 laps of St James’ Park and NO amateur race

LONDON MARATHON organisers have revealed the new course that runners will take to in Sunday’s rescheduled race.
The much-beloved event will be elite-only this year for its 40th edition, with coronavirus regulations preventing over 45,000 participants from taking to the capital’s streets.

Superstars such as Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei will instead complete 19 laps of St James’ Park within a ‘secure biosphere’.
A stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, athletes will begin by turning onto Horse Guards Road.
Their clockwise loop will then take them onto Birdcage Walk, before meandering onto Spur Road.
As is traditional, the race will still finish on The Mall, by Marlborough House Gardens.

Public spectators will not be able to watch the race in person, although the BBC will broadcast eight hours of coverage for fans to consume at home.
Most of St James’ Park itself will remain largely accessible to members of the public, but with no public viewing points.
Kipchoge, 35, is favourite to win the men’s event, originally scheduled for March, as he squares off with Kenenisa Bekele.
Meanwhile Kosgei, 26, headlines the women’s field.

Although more than 40,000 keen runners have signed up to compete ‘virtually’ – either from home on a treadmill or on a different course of their choice.
The event will also honour murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence at the lap-18 mark – the age he was when he was killed in an unprovoked racist attack in April 1993.

Triathlete stops on finish line to let rival beat him after he heads wrong way in stunning act of sportsmanship

SPANISH athlete Diego Mentrida surrendered his spot on the podium as he allowed James Teagle to pass him on the finish line at the Santander Triathlon.
In one of the most stunning acts of sportsmanship, Mentrida spotted Teagle taking a wrong turn near the end of the race in Spain.

Teagle ran towards a group of spectators inside a fenced off area on the last corner, but the 21-year-old was quick to spot his mistake.
He then stopped just short of the finish line to allow Teagle to come home in third place – much to the shock of the Brit star who shook his hand in disbelief.
Speaking to Eurosport after the race, Mentrida stated that it wouldn’t have been fair of him to finish in front of Teagle.
He said: “When I saw that he had missed the route, I just stopped.

“James deserved this medal. He didn’t notice the signs or they were misaligned.
    MEN-KIND
“I do not know, but the second time I would have acted the same.”
The sporting world was quick to praise Mentrida, as Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian tweeted: “The real values of SPORT in a single gesture.
“James Teagle got confused on the last corner and was passed by Diego Mentrida who did this… #Respect#FairPlay.”

Another commented: “That is sportsmanship personified.”
A third added: “You could argue that the British runner should’ve known the course as a professional.

Kriss Akabusi reveals Sky News TV chat saved his life with doctors finding Olympic hero had bowel cancer

AS Kriss Akabusi prepared for his regular TV slot, little did he know the appearance would end up saving his life.
Two years ago, Britain’s three-time Olympic medallist had a decent early-morning gig on Sky News reviewing the newspapers.

    3

Kriss Akabusi is one of Britain’s most loved athletics heroesCredit: Blakeway Productions

But his review companion Tania Bryer and presenter Sarah-Jane Mee encouraged him live on air to see a doctor pronto when he mentioned an awkward health complaint.
Akabusi told SunSport: “I’ve bled quite a lot in my life, since I have piles and hemorrhoids in my early 20s. I’ve often bled from my backside.
“I was a solider before being an athlete. Once, I refused to go to the toilet for three weeks outside.
“When I came back to camp, I ripped my insides out! From there I’ve had a weakness in that area.

“The problem has come and gone, and I hadn’t taken much notice.
“But as I got older it’s happened quite a lot. Two years ago there was an article in the papers about men being slow to see their doctors.

“We were on TV discussing it. Sarah-Jane and Tania said: ‘Let’s change that. That’s nothing to be proud of – go and see your doctor.’
“They added: ‘Next time you come on, we’ll ask if you did it.’ So I had no choice.’”

Prompted by that discussion in the autumn of 2018, the 61-year-old seeked out immediate medical advice.
A colonoscopy brought potentially grave news. A worrying growth had been discovered.
A specialist even said: ‘Hello Mr Akabusi, it appears you’ve got bowel cancer.’
Within a few days he was in the operating theatre. A third of his colon was removed along with polyps in his groin.

An agonising three weeks ensured before he received good news.
The stage-one growth taken out was not cancerous – but importantly the check-up had discovered it six months before it could possibly develop.
He said: “It’s a sobering moment. But Tania and Sarah-Jane saved my life.
“You do start thinking – how many more summers have I got? How many times can I play with my four grandkids? Hopefully now I can see them go to university.
“I’m very aware of my mortality. I think about death every day. Life is no rehearsal.
“My body is in a process of decay. But rather than maybe die at 65, 70, the wonderful medical profession may give me more years. Let’s get to 80, 85, have a good gig.”

Akabusi gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s as he won Olympic silver and bronze medals in the 4x400m relay. He was also third in the 400m hurdles at the Barcelona Games.
Memorably he was a member of the world championship-winning 4x400m relay squad from Tokyo in 1991.
When this story drops this morning, he expects his phone to be buzzing from international teammates and rivals.
Yes, it might make comfortable reading – and Akabusi is unapologetically open and honest – but his cancer scare is important.
Maybe someone reading this can relate to his plight. Maybe they will be compelled to speak to their doctor. Maybe it will save their life, too.
It is why today he is revealing the details for the first time publicly.

    3

It is why he is launching the Stay on Track campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer and the importance of testing and early diagnosis.
As a passionate West Ham fan, Akabusi knows all about the sad plight of Bobby Moore, who died aged 51 in 1993 from bowel cancer.
He said: “Bobby Moore was someone who didn’t talk about it – until it was too late.
“You can be an England football captain, win the World Cup, it doesn’t get much bigger than that, and still die of cancer.
“Bowel cancer is the second largest cancer killer in the UK. Bobby didn’t do anything about his bleeding.
“My demographic – 50, 60, 70-year-old men – when we were brought up, we shut up about health matters. We took it on the chin. Big men don’t cry.
“No, listen. Real men catch it as soon as they can as they want to be there for their grandkids.
“Go and see your doctor. They have seen many bottoms before.”

Caster Semenya must have surgery or take testosterone-lowering drugs to defend Olympic 800m crown after losing appeal

GUTTED Caster Semenya must have surgery or take testosterone-lowering drugs to defend her Olympic 800m crown.
Ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the South African star lost her appeal against World Athletics at the Swiss Supreme Court following a CAS decision.

    1

Caster Semenya has lost her appeal against World Athletics
Two-time Olympic champion Semenya, 29, said: “I’m very disappointed by this ruling, but refuse to let World Athletics drug me or stop me from being who I am.
“Excluding female athletes or endangering our health solely because of our natural abilities puts World Athletics on the wrong side of history.”
Jake Wightman, runner-up at the British Champs on Saturday, has run the fastest 800m time by a Brit for eight years.
The middle-distance runner, 26, smashed his personal best with a blistering victorious time of 1:44.18 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

This puts him 10th in the UK all-time rankings – one spot behind 1980 Olympic champion Steve Ovett.

Usain Bolt ‘contracts coronavirus’ days after 34th birthday party as Olympic sprint legend goes into self-isolation

USAIN BOLT has contracted coronavirus just days after his birthday party, according to reports.
The retired sprint king, who turned 34 on Friday, is understood to have taken a test a few days ago which returned positive today.

    6

Usain Bolt has reportedly contracted coronavirus just days after his 34th birthday party

    6

It is believed the Jamaican star staged a massive bash with social distancing ignored
The Jamaican is said to be have gone into self-isolation but, as reported by Nationwide Radio XJ, it is unclear if he has been displaying symptoms of the virus.
Bolt celebrated his birthday with a surprise party and the report adds that Manchester City and England star Raheem Sterling was in attendance.
Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey, cricket hero Chris Gayle and reggae singer Christopher Martin were also allegedly at the bash organised by Bolt’s girlfriend Kasi Bennett.
Local media did express concern over Bolt’s party amid reports over a lack of face masks and videos appear to suggest safety precautions were not followed.

Jamaica has had a confirmed total of 1,413 Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths on the island of around 3million.
But there are fears it could be on the rise, especially in the capital Kingston, with 410 new cases in the last 14 days.
The athletics superstar enjoyed his first birthday as a father this year after he and long-time partner Bennett welcomed their baby girl Olympia Lightning in May.
He took to social media to post an adorable photo holding his daughter over the weekend.

He captioned the post: “Best Birthday Ever.”
Partner Kasi shared the same picture and wrote an emotional birthday message to the fastest man to ever live.
She wrote: “On August 21, 1986, the world welcomed a future legend. He would go on to become the world’s fastest man and achieve the seemingly unattainable.
“He captured the hearts of not only his fans but a one, Kasi Bennett.
“They would then have the most beautiful child out of pure love, Olympia Bolt. And thus began his greatest journey yet…
“Happy birthday to the man I am blessed to call my love. Olympia has the the world’s greatest daddy.
“The way you love us is otherworldly and I hope we made this day the most memorable birthday you’ve ever had! We love you so much my baby.
“I won’t do much writing (after that hella long letter this morning) but know that you are God-blessed and high favoured. I love you baby. My king forever.”

He won nine gold medals – in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m – across the Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, but had the Beijing relay medal stripped after team-mate Nesta Carter failed a drugs test.
The 6ft 5ins hero – who tried to get into professional football after hanging up his spikes – also holds world records in the 100m and 200m events having clocked 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds respectively at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Creative England athletes turn to nature to keep fit during lockdown ahead of Birmingham Commonwealth Games

ENGLAND’S leading stars have found ingenious ways to keep fit during lockdown.
SunSport’s exclusive set of photos show how some have adapted their training routines following the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Gymnast Courtney Tulloch, para-swimmer Alice Tai and basketball player Dominique Allen have gone out of their comfort zone in recent months.
The trio are set to be important members of Team England at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, which start on July 28, 2022.
Tulloch, 24, said: “Gymnastics is a really difficult, if not virtually impossible, sport to replicate without access to all my usual equipment.
“In an odd way, I’ve kind of enjoyed the challenge of finding new ways to train.

“I’ve used my body more than ever and used household objects, or natural elements like trees in the park and outdoor spaces, to work on my strength and conditioning.
“It’s a relief the restrictions are starting to lift though because I have missed my Team England teammates.

    9

England will be hoping Tulloch, 24, will bring home the medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

    9

Tai, 21, burst on the scene in 2014 with a gold medal at the European Championships in Eindhoven

    9

Allen has expressed her delight in the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham
“We have all kept in touch via social media to spur each other on but I can’t wait until we all meet up as we get ready for the Commonwealths.
“Team England includes athletes from all over the country, from all backgrounds and is the most representative team of England as it is today.”

Tai, 21, said: “As athletes we have all had to adapt.
“I haven’t been able to swim in a pool for a period of time so have done lots of land-based training at home and have even ventured out to the sea on the South Coast.
“Despite the sunshine, it was still a shock to the system to get into the water and very different from my normal training environment.”

Even though she has been named Olympia Lightning, Bolt will not force her into athletics.
Speaking to Codelist, the Jamaican legend said: “I’ll try not to push her into athletics.
    “It is not for everyone.
“Also, it will be more difficult for her, because she will be in comparison with me.

“But if she wants to do it, I’ll support her.”
Bolt welcomed his new arrival to the world with long-term partner Kasi Bennett.
He has been dating Bennett since 2014, but the pair did not go public with their relationship until 2016.
The sprint legend confirmed she was pregnant in January with a post on his Instagram page.

And Bolt, who retired in 2017, admitted he has been enjoying his first few months as a father.
“My goal has always been to be one of the greatest; to be the best model to follow.
