      Athlete Wilfried Happio left bloodied mess as he’s assaulted before race but amazingly wins with eye patch and blindfold

      FRENCH athlete Wilfried Happio was shockingly attacked just 20 minutes before he became the national champion in the 400m hurdles.The 23-year-old was left a bloodied and battered mess after he was violently assaulted during his warm-up in Caen on Saturday.

      An individual somehow managed to evade security where he proceeded to land several blows to the face of Happio.
      Happio’s coach Olivier Vallaeys stepped in to block the attack, before the person was sharply arrested by the police.
      Le Parisien have stated that the French Athletics Federation and the city of Caen will file a complaint on Sunday against the perpetrator.
      According to RMC Sport, Happio was coughing up blood just moments before the start of the race.

      Despite the sickening assault, Happio declared himself fit enough to compete.
      Wearing an eye patch along with a bandage draped around his face, the Parisian incredibly became the French champion as he won with a time of 48.57 seconds.
      It was a new personal best for Happio, who also sealed his place at next month’s World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
      He will be hoping to improve on his 33rd placed finish from the 2019 World Championships where he crashed out in the heats.

      Speaking after the race and before he went to the hospital for further examinations, Happio said: “I don’t want to dwell on it.
      “We’ll leave that to the competent people. To talk about the race, we worked a lot, we redid the music and that’s it.
      “The feelings were good. I’m glad I did this time. Physically it’s fine.”
      His coach Vallaeys remarked: “There was a big incident during the warm-up. Someone jumped on him and hit him.
      “A guy who came from nowhere asked him if it was really him Wilfried Happio and threw himself on him. I belted it.
      “It was 20 minutes before the race, we were ready to go to the call room. We’re in shock. The guy was arrested. Wilfried is fine.

      Schmidt was snubbed from Germany’s Olympics team last summer when she was was an unused substitute for the 4x400m mixed relay event.
      But despite limited success on the track, Schmidt has shot to stardom off it.
      She was spotted hanging out with Paris Saint-Germain ace Neymar last month, and has been picking up gigs in TV and modelling alongside her running.
      Speaking to Bild on rubbing shoulders with global megastars, Schmidt said: “These are all moments and experiences that I really appreciate.”

      A sprint battle never came to fruition, but Schmidt is still hoping to race the 30-year-old Brazilian one day.
      She said: “He shied a bit, but he really has a lot of appointments and who knows, maybe he’ll still do it after all.”
      Schmidt has even rejected an offer to appear in Playboy in the past, and revealed she wants to be a source of inspiration to kids hoping to get into athletics.

      When asked whether she would rather be a model or athlete, Schmidt said: “I just want to be perceived as an athlete, I want to inspire young people and give them an insight into my beautiful sport.

      She bravely chose to break her silence during Pride month after “dark times” when she considered taking her own life.
      Dame Kelly, who served in the Army, told the Sunday Mirror she first realised she was gay when she kissed another female soldier at the age of just 17.
      But she bottled up her true feelings for years – and suffered episodes of self-harm.
      Even her celebrations after she won gold in the 800 and 1,500 metres at Athens were spoiled as she feared being outed.

      Dame Kelly feared she’d “still be in trouble” if she’d admitted to being gay while in the Army, although family and close friends have known of her sexuality for years.
      She joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1988, a month before her 18th birthday.
      At the time, the forces had a ban on LGBT soldiers, which was only lifted in 2000.

      After her first kiss with another woman, Kelly wrote to her stepdad to tell him what had happened.
      “I was confused and a bit scared of what it meant,” she said.
      “But he accepted it straight away”.
      She went on to have relationships with other female soldiers during her 10 years of service, risking court martial, and came out to the rest of her family in 1997.
      Between the ages of 27 and 32, she was in a relationship, but broke it off so she could focus on the Olympics.
      By 33, however, her mental health began to suffer.
      In 2003, she self-harmed before the World Championships final in France, running a tap to drown out the sound of her tears.
      “I felt I had no control over myself,” she said.
      “Yet at the same time I had this pull to succeed, thinking, ‘If I win gold it’ll all be ok’.”

      Despite her grief, she didn’t ask for support as she was terrified of being dropped from Team GB.
      In 2020, she suffered Covid and a breakdown – and contacted a military LGBTQ+ leader to ask if she could still face sanctions for her Army relationships.

      Felix Kirwa wins marathon despite running extra 1.1km after being sent WRONG way by blundering officials in Stockholm

      CHAOS reigned in the Stockholm Marathon as the leading trio, including race winner Felix Kirwa, were sent the wrong way and forced to run an extra 1.1km. The lead runners Kirwa, Tesfaye Lencho Anbesa, and Merhawi Keste were initially pointed in the wrong direction to run in the marathon.

      However, while this was promptly corrected, another mistake soon followed as a lack of signs failed to indicate where the lead pack should run – leading them straight on when they should have turned.
      They ran for a full minute before realising the mistake – with this costing them the lead of the race.
      But Kirwa, 26, managed to come back and win the event in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and seven seconds despite the extra 1.1km he was forced to run.
      The double misdirect caused by the mishap caused Kirwa to lose out on the chance of breaking the record for the marathon, which stands at 2:10:10 – just 57 seconds less than Kirwa’s time.

      A month after carrying his nation’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, Farzad Mansouri fled Afghanistan with his immediate family in fear of reprisals from the Taliban.
      After spending EIGHT MONTHS in a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi, the 20-year-old came to the UK three weeks ago on a special 12-month sportsperson’s visa.
      GB Taekwondo have given Mansouri access to their training facilities and a place to stay close to their national centre.

      His mum, dad, brother and sister remain in the refugee camp in the Middle East which is providing safety and shelter to around 2,000 people.

      “But for now, I’m very happy to be here. I never had any facilities like this to train in Afghanistan.
      “Sometimes, I still don’t believe I’m here. I’m very lucky and I can’t thank everyone enough for giving me a chance to start taekwondo again.
      “In the camp, me, my brother, sister and nephew lived in one room. I couldn’t train for taekwondo, but I tried to keep myself fit by running and other physical activities.
      “This was all in the camp as we weren’t allowed to go outside. We didn’t see anywhere. Most of the time we were sleeping or eating.”
      Mansouri’s elder brother lives in Reading – he arrived in the UK several years ago – and has obtained British citizenship.
      Lawyers involved in his case are exploring all options but there is the chance he could kick heads in GB colours at a future Olympics.
      Hall added: “His legal status is yet to be confirmed and he has personal ambitions of competing for Great Britain.
      “But also he has personal ambitions to become an Olympic champion – no matter where that might be.
      “Considering the hardship this lad has gone through mentally and physically to harbour those ambitious, knowing his family are still in a refugee camp, is just something we felt compelled to help with.

      A TEENAGE athletics star won her 100metre hurdle race despite crashing into the second barrier and falling.It started to go wrong for Abigail Dennis at the first hurdle where she landed flat footed over the other side.
      Dennis got off to a poor start in the race
      The teenager fell to the ground after hitting the second hurdle
      Dennis got back to her feet and caught the competition
      Sophmore Dennis caught the first and second placed contestant with a hurdle to go
      The track star caught the leader and crossed the line after 16.85 seconds
      Dennis wasn’t able to recover her stride and failed to get adequate elevation to clear the second hurdle.
      As a result, she crashed into the barrier and fell, handing her opponents in the county championships in New Jersey, US, a healthy six to eight metre advantage.
      At this point, most would give up after the disastrous fall. But not Dennis.
      She got back up and ate into her fellow competitors’ lead over the next eight hurdles to snatch the win.

      But it may just be the start of a career in telly.
